His 6.03/238.09 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Shirley Muldowney's 5.92/243. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.24/236.84 in the semifinals against Larry Brown, who advanced with a 6.30/217. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran 6.05 to qualify #16 in the 32-car field. He was upset in the opening round by Clayton Harris, who improved from his qualifying 6.17 to a 6.12/227 to beat Coughlin's 6.20/227.

Notes: Coughlin debuted his new dragster at the NHRA Division 3 Opener in April at Indianapolis. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.12/240.00. A 6.13/230.76 beat Bill Goudreau in the first round, but in the semifinals, a 6.15/237.46 lost to Don Garlits' 6.03/234. He was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals on April 27 at Baton Rouge. In qualifying, he set a new track speed record of 249.30. His ET of 5.986 qualified him #7 in the eight-car show. He beat Garlits' 6.02/242 in the first round, with a 5.99/235.60. Unfortunately, he broke in the semifinals, giving Jeb Allen a free ride into the final. He won the second Division 3 race held at Edgewater on May 4. Jeg qualified #1 with a 5.96/245.23. He made his way to the finals, where he beat Mark Howick for the victory with a Low ET and Top Speed run of 5.90/248.61. Coughlin continued to run well, qualifying #7 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.00/234.37. He advanced past a tire-smoking Dave Uyehara in the first round, but Garlits' 6.06 in round two stopped his off pace 6.20. At the end of June, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified in the #5 spot with a 6.12. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jerry Ruth. Ruth had run Bandimere's first "five" in qualifying. Sure enough, Jeg's 6.20 lost to eventual winner Ruth's 6.08. Jeg won Division 3 in 77, 78, and 80.
