Notes: This '40 Willys put on an unbelievable show with numerous 7-foot-high wheelies while speeding down the track--and still turning capable times. Driving duties were shared by Dave Crocker and Skip Cowling, but most of the driving was done by Skip. At Fontana on Sep. 11, Cowling made three runs in the wheelstanding Willys. His first run was the night's fastest with 11.27 at 117.04. On his final run, the right front wheel broke after a monster 7-foot wheelie off the line. On Sep. 26 at Lions, Cowling turned 11.20. On Oct. 24 at Santa Maria, Cowling was paired with the wheelstanding Goldfinger Dodge for a 2-out-of-3 match race. Notes: Lloyd and Carol Cox raced the family car, bought new in 1958, with good success at El Mirage and a few favorite drag strips in Southern California. Lloyd drove it occasionally, but Carol drove it most of the time. She was a class winner almost every week they drove through a drag strip gate. At San Gabriel, she raced in S/SA and at Santa Ana in SX. At Santa Ana, she set back-to-back track records on Aug. 1 (96.46 mph) and Aug. 17 (97.40 mph). They set a track record (95.64 mph) at San Fernando on Oct. 5 with Lloyd driving. But it was Carol who was the best of the two behind the wheel, as her win at the 1962 Winternationals in S/SA would attest. She became the first woman to take a class win at a national event. And she was recognized for it as early as 1958. Drag News wrote that she was "one of the nation's top women drag racers." Riverside used to hold 1/2-mile drag races.
