Notes: In May, Joe was still racing his Firebird when he went to Atco for its FC show. It was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.07/200.44 beat Joe Shubert's 7.58/192. He improved to 7.00/200.44 in round two to beat Tommy Musselman's 7.08/197. I do not have the semi-final results, but he advanced into the final to run Peter Gallen. Peter had problems and shut down to a nine-second time while Amato got the victory with a 7.08/200.44 (again)! |

Notes: Photo 81 Nationals. Also ran 6.55 at Gainesville on 3/81 and 6.55 National Record at Epping NH on 8/81. | Joe was at Atlanta for the NHRA Division 2 Opener on March 8. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.86/196.07. A first-round 6.82/199.11 beat Bill Brock, and he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.68/201.79 over Jeff Richardson. In the final, he faced Bill Mullins Chevy-powered car and the two had a good race with Amato's 6.71/202.70 beating Mullins' 6.73/204. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where qualified #1 with a 6.55/208.33. The car ran like a bracket racer, running 6.59/207.37 in the first round, over Bruce Horner, a round two solo at 6.61/207.37 when Darrell Gwynn lost fire and another 6.59/206.42 beat Bogie Kell in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Chet Rickard who had set Low ET with a 6.49 in the first round. Chet pushed the tree a little too hard and fouled away a 6.52/211 while Joe got the victory with a 6.61/199.11. Amato scored another win at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.62/206 behind Rickard's 6.60. These two would work their way into the final. Joe beat Willard Buff and Gwynn in the semifinals to run Chet. Once again Joe had the slower time in their final round race, but once again he came out on top when his 6.65/206.42 beat Rickard's late 6.61/207. Amato was at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Cayuga Park in Canada in May, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did set Top Speed at 209.30. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Joe qualified #1 with a 6.67, then ran a solo 6.65 in the first round, when Buff failed to fire. In the semifinals, a 6.67 beat Kell's 6.86 and Amato found himself in another final round. He faced Mullins again and this time Bill got the win with a 6.67/206 beating Joe's runner-up effort of 6.70/205.47. Amato and Rickard continued their battle at Atco on June 7 for the NHRA Division 1 race. Joe qualified #1 with a 6.78/203.16 and a 6.76/205.94 (Top Speed) advanced when Jeff Rapp broke in the first round. Another solo run of 6.78/203.16 came in the semifinals after his was opponent, Joe Baker, crashed after winning his first-round race. This put Chet and Joe into another final round meeting. Unfortunately for Joe, his transmission broke and Rickard got the victory with a 6.74/205. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.70/206.42 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 6.77/203.61 beat Mark Pieri and in round two his 6.81/201.79 beat Gwynn's 7.03/201. In the semifinals another 6.81 at 201.34 lost to Brian Raymer's 6.74/205. |

Notes: Amato was the second alternate at the NHRA Winternationals 5.926 246.57. He did better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, where he ran 5.86/243.24 to qualify #13. An off pace 6.39/165.44 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.02/231. in the opening round. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals held at Atlanta in Mid-April. It featured eight-car pro fields, so Joe really had to step up to qualify. He did, running 5.60/246.57 to qualify #3. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Connie Kalitta. The following week (April 24), he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 5.65 qualified him #3 in the field, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Tharp. In May, Amato won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. There he stopped Jody Smart in the final. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.70/250.00 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, but he lost to Gene Snow in the opening round. Joe qualified #3 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but he lost to Scott Kalitta in round one. He also had a first-round loss at the NHRA Springnationals. After qualifying #11 with a 5.89/243, his 5.83/243.24 lost to Smart's 5.77/250. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe only qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but he beat Scott Kalitta in round one, and in the semifinals, his 5.76/244.56 took out Gary Beck's 5.80/237. He faced Smart in the final, and it was Amato's day as his 5.68/239.36 led wire to wire over Jofy's 5.90/252. The following week (July 10), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and once again, he qualified #4. He also found himself in the final again too. Amato beat John Davis and Smart to face Richard Tharp in the final. This time Joe had to settle for the runner-up spot. Obviously, things were clicking for the team. They pulled into Englishtown the following week for the NHRA Summernationals. Joe ran 5.69/251.39 to qualify #2 behind Tharp's 5.60/240. Amato took it easy in the opening round, where his 9.73/83.02 advanced when Butch Osmon fouled. Both he and opponent, Scott Kalitta, hazed the tires in the second round, but Joe's 5.93/250.00 hung on to win over Scott's 5.98/231. He next took out Gene Snow's 5.93/196 in the semifinals with a 5.79/248.61. It was a rematch of the Grandnationals final, and the results were the same. Joe ran 5.59 (Low ET) at 250.00 to beat Smart's tire-smoking 6.01/243. Amato did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he did go to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 5.77/252.80 (Top Speed) qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and in round one, his even better 5.74/248.61 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.71/236. |

Notes: First car over 260 with a 262.39 National Record at Gainesville in March 1984 (backed up by 260.11). Just beat Kenny Bernstein to the mark. Did it partially by coming out with a much taller wing than normal (AKA the Kareem Abdul Jabbar wing). Later upped the mark at the Summernationals. Also ran 263.92 at the Cajun Nationals in June 1984. | Joe started the season with a runner-up finish at the season opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #3 with a 5.59/254.23. In the first round his 5.61/243.90 beat Bill Carter's 5.71/245. In round two he ran a single when Chuck Haase broke behind the line. Unfortunately, Joe hurt an engine on the solo and had to replace it with a new "bullet" for the semifinals. There, he faced Don Garlits and Amato won easily with a 5.84/230.17 over "Big Daddy's" 6.01/240. In the final, he ran Gary Ormsby and the two ran a real close race with Gary taking the win with a 5.66/243 over Joe's hard charging 5.67/254.25. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals he made history with the sport's first 260 mph run. He started by qualifying #2 with a 5.53/259.36 behind Gary Beck's Low ET of the meet 5.47. In the first round, a 5.55/257.87 beat Carter's off pace 6.28. In round two, a 5.61/259.36 beat Chris Karamesines' 5.80/243. He broke the 260 mph barrier in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.11 that defeated Winternationals winner Ormsby's 5.66/249. In the final he met with low qualifier Beck. Joe got the victory and improved his Top Speed to a 262.39 at 5.54 in defeating Gary's 5.68/245. A new era had arrived. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Joe grabbed another win. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, he beat an out of shape Gary Read with a 5.56/255.68. In the semifinals, a 5.62 beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.72. In the final, he ran 5.60/259.36 (Top Speed) to beat out Dick LaHaie's 5.64/249. In May, Amato upped his speed to 263.92 at State Capitol Raceway near Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He ran that speed while qualifying #2 with a 5.53 in the eight-car show. In round one, he beat Danny Danell with a 5.65/257.87, but in the semifinals, he had a rear end break and he lost to Beck who went on to win the event. |

Notes: Joe started the '86 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.47/269.46 (Top Speed and a new NHRA record). Another 5.47 at 263.15 beat a blower tossing Chris Karamesines in the first round. In round two, his 5.46/261.62 advanced when Earl Whiting broke. In the semifinals, he slowed to 5.59/260.11 and lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.54/265. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified well back in the field (#13) with a 5.64/261.17. His first-round 5.78/243.63 beat Gene Snow's 5.84/231, but in round two he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 5.46/246 with an early shut off 5.84/197.80. He followed the NHRA tour to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.48/262.39. He took out Kalitta in round one, with a 5.61/253.87 before losing a close one to Snow in round two where both ran 5.64 (Amato at 250.41). NHRA's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/261.17 qualified #3. A quick-leaving 5.66/255.46 beat Ray Stutz's 5.64/242 in the first round, but in round two his 5.69/249.51 lost to Gary Beck's 5.68/245. After all those second round losses, it was good to make it into the final at the NHRA Springnationals. Joe qualified #6 with a 5.57/256.70 and in the first round, his 5.64/256.41 beat Richard Holcomb. Round two saw Amato's 5.75/207.66 take out Snow's 5.81/200 while a semifinal 5.60/253.73 beat a tire-smoking Stutz. This put Amato into the final against Kalitta. Unfortunately, Joe broke and Kalitta singled for the victory. After that, it was off to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.60/254.86 and an improved 5.54/256.41 in the first round, beat Bob Simmons. Once again, he lost in round two where his 5.59/255.24 lost to Darrell Gwynn's 5.51/260. Joe also ran 271.16 at 1986 Cragar Classic. |

Notes: Joe Amato logged the first 5.0-second run with a 5.090/287.72 (the best speed ever) at Ennis 10/87, only to have it bettered on the last run of the day by Gene Snow with a 5.089 at just 267.06 mph. Neither driver backed up their runs for records. Photo from Indy 1987. Earlier set national record at 279.24 at the 87 Southern Nationals, 282.13 at Indy (not backed up), and 280.98 at the Keystones. Ran 5.110 and 283.73 at 87 Cragar Classic. | Amato started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January It was an eight-car field and Joe's 5.66/247.93 qualified #4. Darrell Gwynn fouled against him in the first round, and Amato's piston burning 5.80/245.23 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran 5.77/247.25, but lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.72/250. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.42/270.27 qualified #6. He picked up to 5.38/268.49 in the first round, over Denver Schutz's 5.65/251. Gene Snow broke against him in round two, so he advanced with a 5.47/267.45. In the semifinals, his 5.50/264.93 beat Gwynn's 5.63/241. This put Amato into the final against Don Garlits. Based on ETs, the "Old Man" had the advantage, having run a best of 5.36 during eliminations. Sure enough, Garlits set Low ET in the final with a 5.29/270 to beat Amato's 5.41/258.54. Joe's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Strauss in the first round, with a 5.61/257 and in the semifinals he stopped Hank Endres. This set up a Gwynn vs. Amato final. Joe took the victory with a 5.47/265.48 (Top Speed and track record). A week later (March 22), he did it again, this time over a sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 with a career-best (to this point) 5.32/274.80. He beat Endres in the first round, with a 5.37/272.89 while in round two another 5.32 at 276.14 (Top Speed) beat Larry Sutton. In the semifinals, he ran 5.39/257 to beat Larry Minor and for the second week in a row his final round opponent was Gwynn. Amato went on to win his eighth NHRA Career victory with a new career best of 5.29 at 274.05 to stop Darrell's close 5.30/266. He was at the Texas Motorplex on April 5 for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was another eight-car show and Joe qualified #7 with a 5.36/266.98. A strong 5.37/274.47 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.23/271. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Joe's 5.29/278.12 qualified #2 behind Gwynn's 5.28/274. These two would work their way to the final. Amato started his march by running 5.29/279.24 (new NHRA speed record) to beat a tire-smoking Gary Ormsby. Snow also smoked the tires against him in round two and Amato advanced with a 5.35/273.05. He got lucky in the semifinals when he ran an out of shape 5.73/253.87, but won because Earl Whiting was having his own troubles and only ran 5.86/192. This put the two former alcohol dragster drivers into the final again. This time Darrell took the win. Joe went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but lost a motor in the first round, and fell to Mike Brotherton. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at Baton Rouge on May 24 for the Cajun Nationals. He set a track record 5.30 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 272.89. Joe made his way to the final by beating Frank Bradley's 5.46/263 in the first round, with a 5.34/275.06 (Top Speed). In round two, Gwynn fouled against him and his 5.39/269.78 advanced. A semifinal 5.33/270 beat a tire blazing Hill and set up a final round meeting with Dick LaHaie. Both had run 5.33 in their semifinal races so it was close. It was a tight race, but Dick's 5.31/268 got the victory over Joe's 5.32/270.51 runner-up attempt. |

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 4.967 and 290.32 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 4.996 low qualifier at 89 Houston Supernationals on March 3/1989, which was the fourth entry in the Cragar 4-Second Club for Top Fuel. Amato waged a war with Gary Ormsby for the NHRA Top Fuel Championship that went down to the final race. It was wire to wire between the two the whole season. It started at the Winternationals where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.04/280.81. He lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. The Supernationals at Houston was the next race and once again Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 4.99. He beat Dick LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.11 and a 5.09/281 beat Jim Head in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Frank Hawley with a 5.04/285 to go into the final against Ormsby. In the final, Amato took a nap at the line and lost to Gary's 5.09/278 with a quicker 5.03/288.63. Gainesville hosted the Gatornationals on March 19 and for the third straight event, Joe set Low ET in qualifying #1 (5.05). Unfortunately for Amato, a 5.15 by Dennis Forcelle beat his 5.17 in the first round. He was father down the qualifying sheet in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.20/275.81 gave him the #8 spot in the field. He picked it up to a 5.15/270.51 in the first round, to beat Shirley Muldowney's 5.28/261. But in round two he fell to Ormsby. At Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals, a 5.06/278.12 qualified #4. In the first round against Eddie Hill, he smoked the tires and lost. At the sixth race of the season, the Cajun Nationals, he qualified well with a 5.15/277.77 for the #3 spot, but he again lost in the first round, this time to Gene Snow. He broke through for his first win of '89 at the Springnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.10/278.98. Joe beat pat Dakin, Lori Johns (with a 5.08/284), and Ormsby in the semifinals to set up a final round match-up with Hank Endres. In that final round race, Endres tried hard with a 5.22/266, but it was Amato's day and he won with a 5.12/280.72. The NHRA tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.17/272.31. In the first round, he dispatched Head's 5.32/267 with a 5.22/275.48. He beat Hill in round two with a 5.28/272.56 to Eddie's close 5.29/272. In the semifinal, Joe ran a 5.25/268.65 that lost to LaHaie's 5.14/279. Race number nine of the season was at Englishtown for the Summernationals. A 5.08/286.18 qualified #2, but he took a first-round loss by Forcelle. Things went more his way at the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.22/268.57. He beat Muldowney in the first round, and in round two, a 5.28/264 beat Forcelle's 5.41. In the semifinals, both he and LaHaie ran 5.22's with Joe coming out on top. In the final, he met Ormsby and a 5.21/266.11 covered Gary's 5.33/270. It was Joe's second win of the year. He almost got another win at the next event, the California Nationals. There he qualified way down in the #12 spot with a 5.15/284.18. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.13/270 when opponent Jack Ostrander broke. In round two he beat Hill with a 5.06/282.39 and in the semifinal, a 5.09/282.39 beat Head. In the final, he met Low ET setter and low qualifier Frank Bradley who beat Joe for the title. He made his third final in a row at the Seafair Nationals at Seattle International. He qualified #1 with a 5.03/282.84 and another 5.03 at 280.72 in the first round, beat Hill. In round two a 5.10/278.51 beat Mike Brotherton and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Ormsby with a 5.07/273.88. In the final he ran LaHaie and even though Dick ran a strong 5.10/278, it was no match for Amato who set Low ET with a 5.01/278.98 in winning his third race of the season. The fourth win came pretty quick, it was at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. He had his worst qualifying spot of the season there when he ran a 5.39/255.75 for the #15 position. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.14/279.15 to beat Bradley's identical 5.14/278. He beat a tire-smoking Darrell Gwynn in round two with a 5.20/275.73 and in the semifinals, a 5.16/277 beat Snow's ailing car. In the final, he ran a 5.24/278.81 over Muldowney for the win. Things didn't go as well at Indy for the US Nationals. Joe qualified #4 with a 5.02/286.16. He beat Frank Cook in the first round. In round two he caught Bradley napping and won with a 5.16/287.08 to Frank's 5.11/274. But in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 10.56/74.96 loss to LaHaie's 5.01/280. The next event was the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. A 5.01/283.82 qualified #5 and in the first round, Joe advanced with a 5.00/288.55 when John Carey fouled. He cracked into the fours in round two, running a 4.96/290.32 over Muldowney's 4.97/287. He stayed in the fours in the semifinals with a 4.98/288.18 beating a tire-blazing Ormsby. But in the final, when he definitely needed to run a four, a 5.01/285.98 came in second best to Gwynn's 4.95/281. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, Joe ran a career best (to this point) of 4.95/288.18 to qualify #3. He beat Gene Snow in round one, with a 5.02/286.18 and in round two, a 5.07/287.17 beat Hill. But a semifinal 5.01/291.26 lost to Ormsby's 4.98/289. The second last race of the year was the Fallnationals at Firebird raceway. Joe qualified #3 with a 5.07/280.81. He beat an engine blowing Ed Moore in round one, and a 5.11/277 beat Lori Johns in round two. But a semifinal 5.14 lost to Muldowney's 5.16. |

Notes: After a multi-year contract with TRW ended over the Winter of '89, Amato found new sponsorship from Valvoline for '90. He had finished #2 in the NHRA points chase in '89 and was hoping to do better in '90. Joe started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the new 3.20 rear-end rule didn't seem to slow him down. He qualified #3 with a 5.03/282.39 (Top Speed), but in the first round, he dropped a cylinder and slowed to 5.24/253.66 in a loss to Don Prudhomme's 5.15/270. The next race was the Arizona Nationals. Amato qualified #5 with a 4.99 at a track record speed of 282.92. He then went on to win by beating Connie Kalitta with a 5.04/281.07; a 5.03/275.48 in round two beat Frank Bradley's 5.11/271, and a 5.08/273.97 in the semifinals stopped Gene Snow's 5.12/268. Joe faced '89 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Gary Ormsby in the final, and Joe's 5.05/275.14 got the victory over Ormsby's 5.11. This was his first NHRA victory in eight months. He qualified #5 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. This time a 4.99/280.37 got him the spot. In round one, Joe beat Top Fuel rookie Ken Koretsky with a 5.08/276.66, while a 5.04/271.98 took out Leo Gastellum in round two. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 7.91/140.09 loss against Snow, who also had problems at 7.23/114. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.06/282.84 qualified #3. Both he and his first-round opponent, Eddie Hill, smoked the tires in the first round, and Eddie's 5.98/256 got to the line before Joe's 6.24/203.06. He then won the NHRA Winston Invitational at Rockingham early in April. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.04/279.58 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Darrell Gwynn's 4.94/277. These two would reach the final together. In the opening round, Joe's 5.02/277.34 beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.14/272, and he beat the other former Funny Car driver, Prudhomme, in the semifinal with a 5.01 279.06, which beat the "Snake's" 5.24/265. Both he and Gwynn had run similar times to reach the final, and Amato even had lane choice. But it was Amato's driving that got the win as he was first off the line, and his 5.04/272.64 outran Gwynn's 5.02/277. Sadly, that was the last NHRA event Gwynn ran due to his accident in England on Easter. Joe set a track record 4.96 in qualifying #1 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His speed on the run was 280.11. The car slowed to 5.14/272.14 in the opening round, but it was still enough to beat Gastellum's 5.26/269. Another 5.14 at 273.63 defeated Jim Head's 5.21/265 in round two. The team found the problem for their slower times was a weak fuel pump. It was changed for his semifinal race with Bradley and Joe shot to 5.00/287.17 to win over Frank, who overpowered the track and smoked the tires. The speed was tops for the race and was five miles per hour faster than any other run made there. He faced Lori Johns in the final, and both ran 5.02 (Amato at 282.30), but the lady crossed the stripe first. These two would also face off in the final at NHRA's next event, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Joe's career-best (to this point) of 4.941/288.46 qualified #1 and broke both ends of the track record. He got lucky in the first round, as he blew his engine on his "odd-lot" solo. The crew installed a new "bullet" for round two, and his 5.02/274 beat Snow's 5.07. Both he and Johns ran 4.99 in winning their semifinal races, with Amato having the better speed at 282 while beating Bernstein. But once again, Amato finished runner-up to Johns as he smoked the tires while she ran 5.00/270 to win. Aside from qualifying #1 with a 5.03 (Low ET) at 281.95, the NHRA Cajun Nationals was not a great race for the team. Only 15 cars showed, so he got a solo in round one, before fouling against Snow in round two. Things went better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 5.04/279.06 qualified second to Frank Hawley's 5.04/275 in Gwynn's car. He stayed in the 5.0 zone by beating Koretsky's 5.33/266 in the opening round with a 5.09/275.98 and a 5.06/277 in round two beat Bradley. In the semifinal, he fell off to 5.13/272.47, but it was still enough to stop Dick Lahaie's 5.16/267. Joe was going into his 45th NHRA Top Fuel final. The two lowest qualifiers met in the final, and Hawley's 5.12/278 got an emotional victory over Amato's 5.22/272.47. Plus 4.939 low qualifier at the 1990 Chief Auto Parts Nationals. He ran 4.955 at Englishtown. Speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. Photo from Indy 1990. |

Notes: Joe qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 4.89/288.18. Another 4.89 at 289.20 in the first round, beat Scott Kalitta's 5.01/279. In the second round, both he and Doug Herbert smoked the tires, but Joe's 7.82/125.56 came out on top. In the semifinal, he met eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. Amato ran a quicker 4.95/283.01, but lost to Kenny's quick-leaving 4.98/282. Still, he left happy as he had just signed a four-year contract renewal with Valvoline. The next event was the Arizona Nationals where a 4.98 qualified #4. He again met up with Scott Kalitta in the first round, and once again beat him with a 4.97/286.25 beating Scott's 5.03. He lost to Herbert in the second round. The third NHRA event of the season was the Supernationals at Houston. Joe qualified #2 with a 4.89/290.51. He made his way into the final where he faced low qualifier Bernstein. In that final round race, Kenny had problems and Amato shot to a 4.91/292.39 for the victory. The Gatornationals was the next race on the calendar and Joe qualified #4 with a 4.90/290.41. Unfortunately, he didn't hang around long, as in the first round, his car broke at half track giving Mike Dunn the win. Things went better at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational in April. There, a 5.01/278.72 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Cory McClenathan's 5.23/277 in the first round, with a 5.01/284.09. In the semifinals, a 4.98/285.26 beat Herbert's 5.02/279 and moved him into the final against Don Prudhomme. In the final, the "Snake" got a slight advantage off the line and held it for the win with his 4.99/278 beating Joe's better 4.98/284.90. These two would meet again in the final of the next race, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 4.92 qualified Joe #4 in the field and he worked his way into the final, running a best of 4.87/287 in the semifinals over Ed McCulloch. The final was a repeat of the last race right down to the winner. Prudhomme's 4.96/278 beat Amato's 5.14/224.43. Memphis was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Mid-South Nationals. Joe qualified #5 with a 5.02/285.26, a first-round 5.03/285.26 beat Danielle DePorter, but in round two another 5.03 at 281.86 wasn't enough to beat McClenathan's 5.01/294. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 4.97/283.64. In the first round, he beat Tommy Johnson Jr with a 5.07/281.42 while in round two a 5.01/288.27 beat Mike Brotherton. He picked up to a 4.98/288.64 in the semifinals, but he lost to Prudhomme's 4.96/278. The NHRA tour moved to Canada for the Grandnationals where Amato ran 5.03/285.80 to qualify #6. He beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.09/281.42, but in round two, he blew a head gasket and slowed to a 5.23/218.92 that lost to Eddie Hill's 5.04/279. Amato set some interesting stats at the NHRA Summernationals. He ran 4.94/290.88 to qualify #4 and then in the first round, he ran his 100th four second time, a 4.97 at 284.36 to beat Brotherton's 5.01/285. No other Top Fuel driver had more than 44 four-second passes at this time so it was pretty impressive. He got his 10first four second time in round two with a 4.88/288.00 that beat Hill's 5.07/278. He shut off to an 8.14/91.07 in the semifinals when McCulloch fouled against him. In the final, he faced McClenathan and Joe got the victory with a 5.01 with no speed recorded over Cory's 5.18. |
