Notes: 1958 was a big year for Ted Cyr and Bill Hopper. They won top eliminator at the U.S. Nationals at Oklahoma City in September. They towed two dragsters back to Oklahoma. The first was their old tried-and-true "Old Blue Machine." It was an unblown carbureted Chrysler that they basically brought along to try and sell it. On the cowling of this old dragster, they had painted "For Sale." It was given the number 214 for the Nationals race. They really hoped to win with their new dragster--an orange-painted blown '58 Chrysler in a Chassis Research frame that was given number 215 for the event. Guess what? They ended up winning all the marbles with the older, smaller unblown Chrysler dragster. But first things first with that older car. Let's go back to the beginning of the season with it before we tell the unlikely story of how Ted Cyr ended up in the winner's circle at the Nationals with it, rather than the newer blown dragster. They started the year at Lions Drag Strip at its season opener on Jan. 12. They won the B/GD class with 10.34 at 139.10 mph. They took top eliminator after three rounds (beating Amis & Satterlee's A/A, Jack Chrisman, and Daddy's Auto Body Buick dragster) to win in the final with 10.48 at 138.67 mph. They garnered top eliminator at Lions the following week at what the strip billed as the New Year Opener on Sep. 19--even though they had already held two races. Ted Cyr won the B/D class with a blistering 10.19 seconds. He waded through several rounds of eliminations, beating Norm Cannon's A/D in the final round to win top eliminator with 10.27 at 140.62 mph. On Feb. 2, they chose to run their dragster at Colton. They took top gas eliminator honors with 10.61 at 124.82 mph. They ended up with the top time for gas dragsters in the meet with 10.40 at 141.95 mph, although they lost in the overall top eliminator run to Gireth Brothers' B/FD. On Feb. 9 at Lions, they took another (ho-hum) top eliminator win with 10.27 at 138.67 mph. They made six runs during the day, all within .6 miles an hour of each other. Their low ET of the day was 10.16 seconds, which they recorded in winning the B/GD class with a speed of 139.10 mph. On Feb. 16, they raced at the first annual Carrot Championships at Holtville, hosted by the Imperial Valley Timing Association. They won top gas eliminator with 10.24 at 141.95 mph, the speed a new track record for A gas dragsters. They spent the weekend of Feb. 22-23 at Lions for their big Two-Way Record Meet. Always trying to find something new in drag race promotion, Lions ran races in both directions: North to South and South to North. In other words, Two Way. After making both runs, the tower computed the average time/speed for both runs. Ted Cyr's Saturday morning started with a northern run of 9.87 at 144.23 mph. He clocked 10.11 at 140.84 mph on his south-bound run. This gave him a "two-way" average of 9.99 at 142.53 mph. Durning Sunday's eliminations, Ted Cyr came out on top with a top eliminator victory, winning a four-and-a-half foot tall trophy. He beat Norm Cannon, Jay Cheatham, and Jack Chrisman. They were calling the dragster the Escofab Special at that race. On Mar. 9 at Colton at the Dragster Invitational, Cyr took the top gas eliminator honors with a top time of 10.58 at 139.36 mph. They got runner-up to Gireth Brothers Chevy B/FD in a pairing of gas and fuel top eliminators for overall top eliminator honors. In a bit of a switch, Cyr and Hopper lent their 354 gas-engined Chrysler to the radical rear-engined sidewinder of Nicolini and Droesbeck for a race at Lions on Mar. 23. After familiarizing himself with the rear-engined sidewinder's ways, Cyr won the B/GD class, followed up by a top eliminator win at 10.29 at 142.63 mph. On Mar. 30, Cyr drove the sidewinder at Pomona in the morning to a time of 9.84 at 142.50 mph. Those times were good enough for the meet's top times, but they broke a torsion bar and left the track to make repairs. They got to Lions in the afternoon after making the repairs. They started wading through eliminations after making a qualifying run. On one elimination round they turned a quick 10.10 at 141.73 mph. They ended up winning top eliminator. Cyr and Hopper's engine and Ted's driving were proving to be a good combination in the sidewinder dragster. At Lions on Apr. 13, Cyr won the B/GD class and took top eliminator. His best ET during the day was 10.02 and his fastest speed was 142.40 mph. After successful outings in the sidewinder, Cyr and Hopper removed their engine from it and put it back into their dragster. They raced at Paradise Mesa on May 10, setting the meet's top speed with a strip record 142.63 mph. They lost in the top eliminator pairing to Dallas Martensen. Interestingly, an ad in Drag News (5/17/58) talked about their desire to face some competition in a wider arena than just Southern California. It read: "This team of true drag racers are willing to travel 500 miles from Escondido, Calif. in their quest for competition. Requirements are a $100 Savings Bond for Top Eliminator of meet and gas paid for to the meet." They took the old "Blue Machine" to Lions' 2-day second-annual Multiple Timing Meet on May 24-25. Lions set up ten timing traps, positioned every 132 feet down the track. All this electronic timing equipment helped racers "plot acceleration curves, determine precise shift points and starting procedures and get minute readings on various gear and tire changes." Ted Cyr got the meet's low ET with 10.08 and won top eliminator with 10.21 at 143.75 mph. They towed to Arizona on June 7-8 for the Drag News Open Invitational at Chandler Drag Strip. Even with three cracked pistons, they won top eliminator against a good field of gas dragsters. Their best ET was 10.26. They took home a 4-foot trophy and $300 worth of racing merchandise. Returning to California, they raced at Lions on June 21. The Cyr & Hopper car took a B/D win with 9.94 at 141.95 mph. They lost the top eliminator running to Fritz Voigt's twin-engine, four-wheel drive A Dragster. On July 5 at Lions, Cyr took top eliminator at 10.02 at 142.40 mph. The next day at the PVTA Championships at Pomona on July 6, Ted Cyr set a new gas national ET record with a 9.61 second run. He turned 140.84 mph on that record run. After that Cyr and Hopper turned their attention to their new blown Chrysler dragster, making shakedown runs with it at Lions on July 12. They brought the old "Blue Machine" back out on Aug. 10 to Pomona. They lost first gear, but still managed to win top gas eliminator with 10.64 at 126.00 mph. Although their attention had been directed to their new blown dragster, they made the Pomona appearance to shake off the dust before they towed back to Oklahoma. At Oklahoma, the dragster field included 104 dragster entries, with 26 A Dragsters in the eliminator runnings. Their new blown Chrysler lost in an early round to the Pearson Olds driven by Jay Cheatham. With that disappointment, they could only hope that the old "Blue Machine" might make a few successful rounds against the stiff competition at the Nationals. It was not a cake walk as they had two cylinder walls in very bad shape, so they had to baby it through the rounds. With a bit of luck, they won the A/D class with a time of 10.04 at 139.75 mph, beating Jay Cheatham. They then waded through several rounds of eliminations, beating Jim Nelson, Albert Ishenbaugh, Carl Grimes, Dave Crowe in the Jones & Mailliard Sidewinder, Buddy Sampson, Chrisman & Cannon, and won the final round against Jay Cheatham. Cyr turned another 10.04 and 140.62 mph in the final. For his win, he took home a beautiful top eliminator trophy and a new 1958 Chevy pickup truck. The balding Cyr also got to kiss Miss Drag Strip, the trophy queen for the meet, wearing a fetching white bathing suit. But for the Cyr & Hopper team, the future lay with their blown Chassis Research dragster. They finished out the year running it. Photo: Hot Rod Deluxe, (Nov. 2018), p. 57 - MB |

Notes: Cyr & Hopper raced gas dragsters, then went to fuel, then returned to gas during the 1959 season, per the 4/11/59 Drag News. In that issue, with a cover headline shouting "158.75 ON GAS - CYR," it was reported that his Five Cycle Special set a new gas record at Long Beach: 9.61/158.75. We have a previously entered but unattributed 9.51/160.14. Was that on fuel or later in the year on gas? - RT; Photo: "'50s Drags in Color," Pat Ganahl's Rod & Custom website - MB |

Notes: 01/04/1959 - First dragster over 160: Cyr & Hopper-161.71 mph. | As Cyr & Hopper's 158.75 "on gas" was ballyhooed on the 4/11/59 cover of Drag News (over three months later), it would appear that the "first over 160" figure was reached on fuel. Any evidence to the contrary? - RT; Photo: Arizona Republic, Dec. 7, 1959 -- MB |

Notes: Cyr and Hopper debuted their small block Chevy dragster at Lions on Jan. 31. It had a Potvin-styled 671 blower in front of the '59 SBC motor, mounted in a Dragmaster frame. The Drag News article (2/6/60) reporting the Lions race stated: "Another outstanding performance was that of Cyr and Hopper. The first time out was with their Isky cam Chevy-powered Dragmaster chassis dragster, probably about the prettiest one on wheels. Their first run was 162.13 mph. They were running over 160 mph consistently all day." Running on gas, his fastest time during the race was 9.35, and his best speed was 162.57 mph. In the semi-final Top Eliminator round, he beat the Merc-engined H & H Garage dragster with a 9.56 at 161.29 mph clocking but blew his engine going through the traps. They next put their Chevy dragster on display in the Speed-O-Rama car show in the Cow Palace in San Francisco, the first car show on the West Coast devoted exclusively to racing vehicles. From the car show, they towed to Fremont for the car's second outing, where they made an impressive showing. Held on Feb. 14, they ran the Chevy dragster on both gas and fuel during the race. It was the first time running on fuel as their outing at Lions had been on gas. The car's name, Flying Wedge, was reported in both the San Francisco Examiner (2/15/60) and Drag News (2/20/60). In the B Open Gas class, he turned 9.4 at 162.45 mph. With virtually no changes, they loaded a fuel mixture in the tank and made three runs on fuel, clocking a best time of 9.02 and 175.41 mph. An Isky ad stated, "This amazing team switches engines and jumps from fuel to gas with such consummate ease that it indelibly stamps them as two of the finest top tuners in the country." That 175 mph speed earned this dragster the title of "world's fastest Chevy." That is what race event booking and speed equipment ads always pointed out for the next few weeks-that this dragster was the world's fastest Chevy. Ted Cyr told the Escondido Times-Advocate (2/16/60) that "he had no idea he would post a record and lay claim to the 'world's fastest Chevy' title. They ran the Chevy dragster at Taft on Feb. 21, clocking best times of 8.90 and 173.08 mph but bowing out with a loss during eliminations. However, they won Top Eliminator at the Taft race with their Chrysler Chassis Research dragster. The research didn't uncover any more about this Chevy dragster than that. It's possible that running two dragsters was a bit much, and they focused their time on their Chrysler dragster, but that is pure speculation.
