Notes: In 1971 Rupp and Dakin switched from gasoline to nitro. They had Logghe lengthen their Woody Top Gas car, Bergler built a nose piece, and they began running Top Fuel, winning TFE at the '71 NHRA Grandnationals in Montreal. They ran this car through 1972. Built a new Woody RED for '73. 6.65 at Columbus

Notes: The team qualified at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.71/213.77 lost to Herm Petersen's 6.31/213. Dakin was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the end of the first weekend of 2qualifying (February 3), his 7.07/214.79 was #12 for the 32-car field. By February 18, he was not listed on the qualifying sheet. I believe Norm Wilcox drove the car there in eliminations(?) At Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, Dakin qualified #2 with a 6.59. A 6.71/187.89 in the opening round beat Roy Mattox. Charlie Moulder got crossed up against him in round two, and Dakin advanced with a 6.63/210.77. In the semifinal, he defeated Richie Sullivan with a 6.61/207.85. He faced Jim Walther in the final, but his car broke, and Walther soloed for the victory. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.28/221.13 qualified on the "bump," and Clayton Harris fireballed an engine in the opening round, so Dakin advanced with a 6.30. In round two, Pat shut off due to a wheelstand against Don Prudhomme. He was at Indianapolis in April for an eight-car show. Lou Novotny fouled against him in the first round, and in the semifinal, Dakin lost to Chuck Kurzawa. On May 6, Pat was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he had the strongest Donovan-powered car as his 6.46 qualified #5. But in round one, the car's front end started to lift, and Dakin had to shut it off, giving the win to his opponent, Moulder, who advanced with a 7.51. Shortly after that (May 20), he was at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.79 qualified #2 behind fellow Donovan campaigner Flip Schofield's 6.70. But Pat did not run in the first round, of eliminations. 6.36 233.16 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Best NHRA national event times were 6.266/227.84 at Englishtown. Pat Dakin won Top Fuel at the '73 NHRA Grand National in Montreal with this car. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Where did Pat run 6.10/237?

Notes: Here's a nice shot of Pat Dakin in G. L. Rupp's car losing a motor during Saturday afternoon qualifying at the 1974 Summernationals. This car was one of the nicest-looking dragsters of its day. Simple but effective graphics. Also, note those enclosed front wheel tubs. Although a neat idea while stationary, they were rudders at speed. If you had to correct and turn the wheel, they would fight you big time, ultimately sending you further out of shape. - Peter Kumble. (Note: The wheel pants having a rudder effect is generally accepted, but many notable top fuel drivers dispute this. Bp). | Ran 6.29 at Indy, 6.06 at Pomona, 6.40 at Gainesville, 6.26 at Englishtown, 6.33 at Indy. Dakin and partner G. L. Rupp had one of the stronger-running Donovan-powered cars at this time. | At Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, Pat qualified #6 with a 6.06/233.16. A first-round 6.07/219.51 beat Gaines Markley, and in round two, he advanced with an easy 6.57/191.48 when Don Garlits broke. Unfortunately, he lost to a strong 5.84 Low ET of the meet blast by Gary Beck in the semifinals. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March, and they qualified #12. In the first round, Dakin's 6.40 lost to Mike Wagoner's 6.39. Pat won the Easter Bunny Top Fuel Open at Bowling Green, Kentucky. On March 31, they were in Charlotte for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8-mile track. Dakin made it into the final by beating Tom Raley in the first round, when both ran 4.39, Pat at 161.87. In the semifinals, a 4.49 beat Marvin Schwartz, but in the final, he lost to Dale Funk. Dakin qualified #1 in the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 6.56/189.47. He then set Top Speed of the meet with a 225.55, but he lost before the finals. Indianapolis hosted the first NHRA Division 3 race, and a 6.29 qualified the team #3. Dakin fouled in the first round against Jim Bucher. They were a little off at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #14 in the field. But Dakin was up to the task, pulling a holeshot 6.40/204.54 to beat Billy Campbell's quicker 6.34/225 in the first round. He did it again in round two, running 6.37/226.70 to beat Bill Pryor's 6.34/192. Unfortunately, they hurt some parts and were unable to run in the semifinal and Pryor was reinstated.

Notes: G.L. Rupp showed up at Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals, but Dakin was not yet there. So Dale Pulde took the car out for a trial run. Dale got out of shape at 1,000 feet but saved it. When Pat showed up, he qualified the car #6 for eliminations. Unfortunately, they lost early. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.101/221.64 best left them as the first alternate for the show. Things were better at Gainesville, where they qualified #9 with a 6.204/228.42, but Dakin lost to low qualifier Gary Read in the first round. Read's 6.142/220.04 beat Pat's 6.498/181.08. The team qualified on the "bump spot" of the eight-car show at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, where Pat ran 6.31 for the spot. He advanced past the first round when Dale Funk lost a rear end just off the line, but in the semifinals, Dakin broke and lost to Paul Longenecker. The team lost in round two at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships when Pat shut off to a 6.77/161.00 that lost to Don Garlits' 6.25/219. The car ran really well at the NHRA Springnationals, turning a 6.069/231.95 to qualify #3. But in the first round, it slowed to a 6.252/219.51, losing to Tom Toler's 6.205/226.70. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Dakin qualified #9, and in the first round, low qualifier Marshell Love broke a rear end, and Pat advanced at 6.612/199.55. In round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 10.25/75.00, sending Paul Longenecker to a 6.16/209.65 win. At Englishtown, Pat qualified #11 at 6.262/233.76. He beat Don Garlits on a massive holeshot in round one, 6.571/213.77 to 6.471/230.17. In round two, he fell to Bill Pryor, 6.398/221.13 to 7.356/145.16. At the Sanair Grandnationals, Pat qualified #8 at 6.322/221.67. He beat Maynard Garritty in round one, 6.48/193/96 to 6.78/199.11. He beat Paul Longenecker in round two, 6.38/200.89 to 11.20/59.76. However, Pat could not start in the semis, sending Gary Beck on a 6.10/214.91 single. Pat qualified #19 at Indy at 6.098/236.77. , but could not race in round one, sending Bob Edwards to face Jerry Ruth. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Pat finished second in the IHRA championship, points to Don Garlits. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 Popular Hot Rodding Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. Car owner G.L. Rupp and driver Pat Dakin bucked the trend in '76. A lot of other teams were making the switch to the aftermarket late Hemi's offered by Keith Black and Milodon, but the team stayed with the Donovan based on the early Hemi motor. Despite this, they did quite well. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.00/229.51 qualified #12 in the field. Unfortunately, Pat lost to Tom Toler in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Pat qualified #11 with a 6.16, but in the first round, he smoked his tires and lost to Paul Longenecker. Things went better at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was only an eight-car show and Dakin worked his way to the final by beating Bob Hilton in the first round, with a 6.18 and Clayton Harris in the semifinals with a 6.23. In the final, he faced Richard Tharp in the "Candies and Hughes" car. They had a good race, but Richard's 6.26/231 grabbed the victory over Dakin's 6.32/226.70. Other highlights of the year included a win at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1, set Low ET at 6.01, and beat Harris in the final. He also did well at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified for the eight-car show and lasted until the semifinals where he lost to eventual winner Tharp. At IHRA's third event of the season, the World Nationals at Amarillo, Pat's 6.41 in the first round, beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.55 in a tire-smoking battle. In the semifinals, he was just a bit late of the line and his 6.16/204.00 lost to Don Garlits' 6.17/230. On May 23 he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He qualified #2 behind Garlits, but he failed to reach the finals. At the NHRA Springnationals, the team qualified #8 with a 6.20/204.54. He smoked the tires to a 6.74 in the first round, that lost to Bob Edwards' 6.37. Best NHRA times were 6.000 at Pomona and 219.51 at Gainesville.

Notes: Type SK team funny car. Pat drove at least one time. Usually, Bill Prior was at the wheel. Al Tracy photo from D3 1977. | Pryor was hospitalized, and Pat Dakin filled at the June Byron Manufacturer's Race. It was the first time behind the wheel of a funny car. He shut off to a 7.31/162.45 in the first round and lost to Don Prudhomme. | The team purchased the national-record-holding Plueger & Gyger Mustang Funny Car and planned to spend 1977 match racing the Funny Car – refitted with a Camaro body - and running the national events with the dragster, but Pryor needed back surgery in April, scotching those plans. They hired Pat Dakin, Ron Correnti, and Ron O'Donnell to fill the match race dates to which they had committed until Pryor could get back on his feet. - Phil Burgess, Dragster Insider, 9/30/08

Notes: Rupp and Dakin were always competitive with their Donovan-powered cars. When the Donovans were running well in T/F, they were there, but when the other Donovan-powered teams faltered, they stood by the 417. In '77, the motor was on the upswing as even "Big Daddy" Don Garlits had one. The team did not run any IHRA or AHRA events this season. Unfortunately, at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Garlits qualified his #2, while Dakin failed to make the show. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Pat qualified #8 in the field with a 6.11. An opening round 6.33/215 beat Frank Bradley, while a second round 6.06 put Grant Stoms on the trailer. Clayton Harris broke on the line in the semifinals, and Dakin advanced into the final with a 6.21/223. He faced Garlits for the title (Garlits was using his old car with a KB since the 417 wouldn't fit in that chassis), but Don's 6.00 was too much for Dakin, and he finished runner-up with a 6.33. The team was at Edgewater in May for the NHRA Division 3 race, where a 6.14/204.54 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Dakin failed to reach the final. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, and it was postponed by rain until June 4. The Rupp and Dakin team did well there, beating Gary Beck in the first round with a 6.20/231.36 before fouling against eventual winner Richard Tharp in the Candies and Hughes car in the semifinals. The following week (June 12), Dakin was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.02/227.84 qualified #4, and in the first round, he won a close decision over Jeb Allen. Both ran 6.20 (Dakin at 227.27). In the second round, the car slowed to 6.56/169.49 in a loss to Johnny Abbott's 6.14/220. The third NHRA Division 3 race was held at US 131. Pat qualified #3 with a 6.15/223.32. A 6.32 put away Dick LaHaie in the opening round, but in the semifinals, he had trouble and slowed to 6.91 in a loss to Shirley Muldowney's Low ET of the meet shot of 6.04. He was the quickest Donovan campaigner at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.97/233.09. A motor-blowing 6.03 in the first round stopped Bradley, and a new engine was put in for round two. It ran well, chalking up a 6.15, just not well enough, as Shirley's 6.05 in the other lane got the win. Pat won the fourth NHRA Division 3 race at Byron Dragway. He set Low ET at 6.21, and in the final, Paul Romine fouled, and Pat eased to a 12.79/60 mph run for the victory. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals in early August. Once again, he was the quicker Donovan campaigner, running 6.16 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. In the opening round, he beat fellow Donovan campaigner Tony Ceraolo with a 6.29, and a semifinal 6.10 beat Canadian Gary Beck's 6.17 to upset the fans. In the final, he faced the Pink car of Muldowney. Once again, she stopped him, her 5.95/234 winning while Dakin slowed to a 7.14/137 loss. It was still a strong showing for the team. The NHRA Division 3 final was held at Beech Bend on August 21. Dakin went into the race battling Jeg Coughlin for the Division 3 crown. But bad luck set in - a crankshaft broke during a qualifying pass (6.45/159.85), and the team couldn't run in eliminations. Pat lost the title by just 22 points. Then came the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. Dakin did not have the strongest Donovan there. His 6.11 only qualified #23 in the 32-car field. In the first round, his 6.18/218 was beaten by Hank Johnson's 6.10/234. The following week (September 11), he was at Union Grove for the PRO National Challenge race, where he again lost in the first round. This time Ron Correnti got him. Notes: Pat Dakin was a Donovan supporter. He hung with the engine through the good times and the bad. After going through a rough couple of years in '76 and '77. The Donovan came back to life in '78 thanks to new heads and intake from Donovan Engineering. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were all running Donovan motors. Dakin's 5.926/243.90 got him the #3 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires against Rob Bruins in the opening round, and his 11.49 lost to Rob's 6.07. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Connell owned Rio Airways in Dallas. Photo from the 1979 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. | Dakin was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals where he ran 6.07/241.28 in qualify on the "bump.” That was pretty good, considering that there were over 30 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and outside looking in sat the cars of Shirley Muldowney, Marvin Graham, and Bobby Hilton, among others. But in the first round, Dakin got crossed up and shut off to a 10.99 loss to Connie Kalitta. At the end of the month, Pat was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was an eight-car show and he failed to qualify. It was a tough show to make as Gary Beck and Richard Tharp also failed to get in. On July 8, he was at Amarillo for the NHRA Division 4 race where he finished runner-up to Bob Noice. The day of the Donovan powered Top Fuel car was quickly coming to an end. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, only two qualified and neither was Dakin's as he failed to qualify.

Notes: After being out of the sport for ten years, Dakin and Gary Rupp returned to the sport in a big way. At The IHRA Winternationals, the team qualified #5 with a 5.36/266.27. A first-round 5.49/264.70 beat Butch Blair and a 5.42/263.15 beat Don Kohler in the semifinal. In the final, Bob Strauss broke, and Dakin ran a 5.38/269.66 (Top Speed) for the victory. They attempted to make the show at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 5.30 failed to qualify. They tried again in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and a 5.29/258.57 qualified #15. Unfortunately, they lost to Dennis Forcelle in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Mid South Nationals at Memphis, and once again, they made the show with a 5.40/271.41 (#16). Dakin broke in the first round, but still beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow. They could not repair in time for their round two match against Eddie Hill. Back to IHRA for the Springnationals at Bristol in May, they qualified #4 and beat Forcelle in the first round, and a 5.83/237.74 beat Snow in the semifinal when Gene smoked the tires. In the final, it was Dakin's turn to go up in smoke, and his 6.98/170.73 lost to Jim Head's equally troubled 6.90/143. At National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.22/271.57 qualified #15. Pat lost to Joe Amato in the first round. In June, in Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.32/265.33 qualified #10. Once again, he lost in the first round, this time to Gary Ormsby. Back in his own stomping grounds, the IHRA, Dakin had some trouble qualifying at the Northern Nationals at Milan. His best of 5.61/273.29 left him as the first alternate, but when Kohler fireballed an engine in qualifying, he could not run, and Dakin was moved into the show. In the first round, he improved to a 5.34/260 to beat Mike Brotherton, but in the semifinal, a 5.52/170.73 lost to Snow's 5.31/266. He attempted to make the show at the NHRA Summernationals, but a 5.36/271.32 best left him the fourth alternate. A big win came at the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. There they qualified #2 with a 5.34/254.74. In the semifinals, he beat Chris Karamesines while setting a 266.95 track record. A 5.40/264.97 beat John Carey for another IHRA win in the final. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Dakin qualified #4 with a 5.336/267.06 & Drew #5 qualifier Jim Head in Round 1. During the run the Timers failed but via the ESPN Cameras Dakin clearly got the round 1 win, Dakin drew #1 qualifier Richard Holcomb in the semis. unfortunately, Dakin had a loose & Leaky Valve Cover that couldn't be tightened in time & had to watch the eventual Runner Up Holcomb solo to the finals.

Notes: Pat qualified #3 at the IHRA Winternationals with a 5.42/265.48, but in the first round, the tires went up in smoke, and he lost to John Carey (5.49/268). He made his first NHRA appearance of the year with a 5.274/276.58 qualifying attempt at the Gatornationals but was only good for the third alternate. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals, a 5.171/280.72, again got him a third alternate slot. A 5.38/266.27 (#6) did get Pat into the eight-car show a Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but an improved 5.30/271.41 lost to Jack Ostrander's 5.21/279 in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.136/282.04 qualified Dakin #12. Unfortunately, he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round with a nine-second shutoff. Dakin's next major event was the IHRA Empire Nationals on July 5, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 5.37/259.36. In the first round, his 5.46/243.96 lost to Eddie Hill's 5.29/268. Pat was the second alternate at NHRA Indy with a 5.132/281.42. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. | Note mechanism on driver's roll cage. Dakin was shooting a TV commercial at the IHRA Springs for airplay in Japan for his sponsor. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992.

Notes: ET and speed confirmed by Jim Hawkins' DragStats. | Pat debuted his new McKinney-built car at the NHRA Gatornationals. It replaced his six-year-old Don Long-built car. Although he failed to qualify, the car ran OK for the first time out, hitting a 5.02/285.17 best that was the fourth alternate for the show. He was still having new car blues at the NHRA Southern Nationals and could not qualify, only running a best of 10.67/79.78. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Dakin had Tom Kattleman turning the wrenches, and he qualified #7 with a 4.89/277.43. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Pat Austin.

Notes: Pat Q15 at Indy at 3.943/305.70. He lost to Cory McClenahan in round one but received no time (was marked as LBT). He was Q16 at Memphis at 4.069/294.05. Lost to Brandon Bernstein in R1, 3.88/308 to 3.967/301.60. Those were Pat's only two national events. We formerly listed him with a 4.76 at Gainesville, but he does not appear on the qualifying or DNQ sheets.

Notes: Best NHRA speed of 312.35 did not qualify with a crazy 8-second time. We need the back story on that one.
