He beat Ed Careccia in the first round, with a 7.09/211.26, and in the semifinal, another 7.09 at 212.26 beat Bob Starr. A final round 7.05 (Low ET) at 211.76 beat Larry Bucher in the Bucher-Szabo entry. He was at New York National the following week (June 29) for the Smoker's Meet. Notes: Al set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.55/206.42 at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. He went on to win by beating Dan Nimmo in round one, with a 6.59/206.89, and a semifinal 6.60/205.47 took out Don DeVault. He met Don Woosley in the final, and his 6.57/206.89 got the victory over Don's 6.68/202. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.70/205.94. A 6.78/186.72 beat Nimmo in the first round, while a 6.70/203.15 in round two beat Mike Kosky. In the semifinals, he picked up to a 6.67/203.15 to stop Woosley from advancing. This put him into the final against Brian Raymer. Al ran another 6.67 at 197.80 to take the victory over Raymer's 6.79/208. He was runner-up to Darrell Gwynn at the NHRA Sportsnationals, where he ran 6.63/204.08 to qualify #6. A first-round 6.74/189.87 beat Jim Jones, and in round two, his 6.56 (Low ET) at 197.36 beat Bill Mullins' 6.63/205. Woosley fouled against him in the semifinals, and Al advanced with a 6.61/199.55. He met Don DeVault in the final, and his 6.99/194.38 got the victory over DeVault's 7.28/164. He also ran 6.576/206.42 at NHRA Atlanta on 4/82.

He improved to 6.56/209.78 in round two while beating Mark Niver's 6.78/201 and another 6.56 at 210.77 in the semifinal beat Bill Barney's 6.73/209. He faced Gwynn in the final, and he set Low ET with a 6.51/211.26 to get the victory over Darrell's 6.61/207. On March 6, he made a stop at Atlanta for the second NHRA Division 2 race. Only five cars showed for the hoped-for eight-car show, and his 6.66/207.85 (Top Speed) qualified behind Gwynn's 6.60/206. He had problems in round one and shut down to 7.44/118.89 in a loss to John Samolyk's 6.77/196. A week later (March 13), he was at Gainesville, where his 6.43/213.77 qualified second Gwynn's 6.36/215. In the first round, Samolyk lost fire, and Al advanced with a 6.44/211.76. Bruce Horner lost fire on the line against him in round two, and his solo 6.51/213.77 advanced. In the semifinal, his 6.52/210.77 fell to Don Wooley's 6.46/208. He beat Russ Lindert in round one with a 6.70/196.93, and in the semifinal, another 6.70 at 207.85 defeated Mike Kosky's 6.66/207. He faced Woosley in the final, and Don's 6.58/206 got the victory over Al's 6.61/207.37. He won the UDRA season opener at Byron. He set a 6.49 track record (at 208), and in the final, his 6.52/198.80 beat Bob Leverich's 7.30/182. He qualified #1 back at National Trail in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.47 (at 207.85) held for Low ET. Unfortunately, he fouled against Charlie Bauer in the first round. A week later (June 19), he was at Central Michigan for the third NHRA Division 3 race. His 6.56/204.54 qualified second to Woosley's 6.52/208. In round one, an off-pace 6.93/180.00 lost to Keith Stark's 6.75/199. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 6.84/197.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before his troubled 10.18/66.47 lost to Tony Zizzo's 6.98/187.

Notes: DaPozzo was at Atlanta in March for the NHRA Division 2 opener. His 6.58/202.24 qualified #3. In the first round, both he and his opponent, Butch Osmon, ran 6.71 (Al at 205.47), but Osmon got the "win" light. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 at 6.52/208.42 and then picked up to 6.38/210.37 in the opening round to defeat Jay Payne. He continued to improve in the second round, where his 6.34/213.88 beat Doug McCan. He then reset the NHRA record to 6.32 (at 212.76) in the semi-final to take out a fouling Bill Walsh. He faced the only Donovan-powered car that qualified, Don Irwin's, in the final. Unfortunately, Al had problems and shut down to 9.73/86.22 while Irwin ran 6.56/216 for the victory. In the first week of April, he was at Warner Robins for the second NHRA Division 2 race. His 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and in the first round, he beat Bill Mullins with a 6.44/210.28. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the semi-final and set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.43/211.76. He went up against Don Woosley in the final, and he slowed to 6.86/210.34 that finished runner-up to Woosley's 6.85/175. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/210.18. He slipped to 6.73/188.91 in round one, but it was enough to beat Tony LeBor's 6.86/170. But a even worse 6.86/169.23 in the semi-final lost to Billy Williams' 6.66/200. The following week (April 28), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 opener. A 6.49/210.28 qualified #3. The car broke in the first round against McCan. Al qualified #2 behind Walsh at the NHRA Sportsnationals with a 6.45/210.67. In the first round, he fouled away a 6.54 against Mike Kosky. The following week (June 9), he dominated the NHRA Division 3 race at Quaker City Dragway. Al's 6.57/205.47 qualified #1, and he survived a first-round scare when both he and Irvin ran 6.69/203.61, with DaPozzo getting the win. A semifinal 6.60/205.47 (again!) beat Tony Zizzo and moved him into the final against Woosley. Al set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 6.42/214.28 to take the victory over Don's 6.70/202. Another week later (June 16), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.46 at 210.37.
