Notes: Davis debuted his new car at Fremont on June 5. After an easy half track pass to check things out he went for an all out run. Unfortunately, the engine let go at the 1,100 feet mark and oil got under the tires. Jim lost control and ended up hitting the flag pole. The car was badly damaged, but he was OK. It had run 7.82 on the run. Jim was at Sacramento for an eight-car show on July 24. He ran well, beating Jim Brandy's Chevy in the first round, with an 8.08 and then beating Frank Bradley in the semifinals with a 7.78. He set Low ET of the meet in the final with a 7.68/205, but he was late off the line and lost to Don Cook's 7.78/201. He was runner-up to Cook again at Sacramento on August 28. This time Jim's final round 7.94/201.78 lost to Don's 7.69/205. |

Notes: Jim qualified #1 with a 7.95/208.32 (Top Speed) at Kingdon on February 19 for an eight-car show. Fifteen cars attempted to qualify. He had some luck along the way to the final when both his opponents broke against him. In the final, he beat Shorty Leventon. Towards the end of April, he was at Fremont. In qualifying, he drove both his car and Willie Kinner's. His 7.82/187 in Willie's car qualified second, and he drove his own machine to a 7.90. As he could not drive both cars in eliminations, he concentrated on his own, and Rich Zoucha drove Kinner's car. The two eventually met in the final, and Rich's 8.30/151 beat Jim's 8.39/188.66. |

Notes: Jim Davis was issued #788. He was Division 7 champ in 1970. Was #71 in 1971. Then had #767 in 1972. | Davis started his season at Fremont's New Year's Day race. Unfortunately, his 7.18/200.88 in the first round, lost to Gerry Glenn's 6.89/217 in John Bateman's car. Jim qualified #12 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.90. He made it all the way to the semifinals before fouling to Tony Nancy. Jim qualified #4 with a 6.80 at Bakersfield for the March Meet. He beat Frank Pedregon's 7.10/201 in the first round, with a 6.82/207.84, a second round 6.94/186.72 beat Norm Weekly's 7.06/182. In round three, he stayed consistent with a 6.87/178.21 over Billy Tidwell's 7.28/167. In the semis, he fell off the pace to a 7.13/201.34 that lost to Tony Nancy's 6.81/215. Jim ran at Sears Point on March 15 for the San Francisco National Open. He beat Gary Ritter's 7.21 in the first round, with a 6.95/209.75, but in round two he slipped to a 7.22 that lost to Vic Brown's 7.15. On May 2 he ran at an eight-car show at Irwindale where he qualified #3 with a 6.93. A first-round 6.99/161.29 beat Tidwell's 7.70. In the semifinals, he ran his best ET of the meet, a 6.92/206.34, but still lost to Gary Cochran's 6.84/216. At the NHRA Division 7 opener on May 23 at Irwindale, he beat Dave Hage in the first round, with a 6.96/200.44. Jim took an easy second round win when Larry Dixon's car failed to fire and, in the semifinals, he watched as Cochran fouled away Low ET of the meet (6.82). Luck was on his side when final round opponent Bill Alexander also fouled giving Jim an easy 7.65/205.00 run for the win. The following week he won again, this time over an eight-car field at Fremont. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.81. Jim needed a little luck to win this one as in the first round, Dixon's 7.05/167 beat his 6.96/210.28, but Larry had lost a rear and was unable to return in the semifinals so Davis got back in on the "break rule.” Gary Ritter shut off against him in the semi's and Jim advanced with a 7.30. In the final he faced Bobby Hightower in Jesse Perkins' "Cow Palace Shell" car. Bob's car blew a head gasket and Davis got the victory with a 7.09. 40 cars showed up to qualify for the 16 spots at the next NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. Jim made the field with a 6.80 for #11 qualifying spot. Unfortunately, a 6.77 from Glenn dropped him in the first round. Davis did manage to win the fourth Division 7 race at Bonneville on August 23. He ran 6.99 over Don Durbin in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.87/211.68 (Top Speed) beat Paul Schoenfeld. In the final he met Jim Dunn and beat him with a 6.91/209.71. | Best NHRA national event times were 6.750/215.31. |

Notes: Jim ran 6.858/220.04 to qualify #11 at Pomona for the 32-car field for the NHRA Winternationals. An opening round 6.94/206.42 beat Mike Tarter. He lost a blower belt in round two and fell to Henry Harrison. The following week (Feb. 14), he was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. This was a sixteen-car field, and Davis' 6.90 qualified #3. In the first round of competition, his 7.07 lost to Les Allen's 7.01. He ran 6.95 at Bakersfield. Davis was issued comp number #788. He was the Division 7 champ in 1970, so his comp number was #71 in 1971. He then had #767 in 1972. |

Notes: AMAZING run, considering what the other early nostalgia top fuel cars were running. However, the 426 was deemed illegal for further nostalgia use. Chrysler cars used the 392 from this point on. |

Notes: Davis built a dual engine dragster, employing Chevy and Chrysler engines in tandem, turning a single drive shaft. He brought out his new twin-engine dragster for the first time at the Jaycee Drag Strip in Oklahoma City for its first competitive runs on Mar. 8. It was a successful outing as he won top eliminator with 134.03 mph. He also set new track records with 10.85 and 148.51 mph. He repeated his winning ways the next week on Mar. 15 at the Jaycee fairgrounds strip. He won the A/D class with 149 mph. He turned 10.56 in winning top eliminator with a speed of 142.85 mph. During time trials he set a new track mark of 9.98 while turning 149.75 mph. On May 24 at the Jaycee Drag Strip, Davis beat Bennie Osborn to win top eliminator honors with 146.57 mph. By mid-July, he called it quits with the dual engine dragster, converting it back to a single engine blown Chrysler set-up on fuel. He had more success with the single motor, running 7.95 at 153.06 mph, at the Jaycee strip on Aug. 28. His 7.95 was no fluke as he ran an 8.03 at the same meet. On Oct. 11, he ran 164.67 at Caddo Mills, Texas, where he took top eliminator honors. -- MB |

Notes: Blown 364" (stroked 327) Chevy/hydro combo. Basically, Davis swapped the Topolino body from the Davis & Ingram BB/A for a steel Mustang coupe. Altered-style chassis with narrow rear and traverse buggy-sprung front with 12-spoke Americans contributed to unique appearance. Car received multi-page feature treatment in 10/65 issue of Cars magazine. - RT | Run through 1966, then sold to Frank Reinauer in 1967. - DD (11/18/65 Drag News) |
