Notes: Also ran 6.69 at Opelousas. | Raymond Godman and driver Preston Davis had a very successful year in '69. At the NHRA Southeastern Division Opener at Phenix, Preston ran well. A track record 7.00 qualified #1 and in round one, he beat Ken Kelly with a 7.48/213.28. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran a motor saving 8.85/105.63. In the final he raced Dave Chenevert. Dave was also running well and his 7.26/217 in the final deprived Davis' 7.44/214.78 of the victory. He won over a sixteen-car field at LaPlace on May 4 for a Pro Circuit race. Davis set Top Speed at 215.82 and in the semifinals, he got back at Chenevert by beating him with a 7.15. A 7.20/199.10 in the final got him the victory. Another victory came at the Pro Circuit race at Oklahoma City on May 18. There he qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 7.47 in the first round, beat Norm Gingrass while in the semifinals, his 7.40 beat Vance Hunt's much better 7.24. In the final, he laid down a 7.35/203.22 to beat Larry Brown in the Boyd-Brown car. |

Notes: Preston was at Gainesville in mid-February for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.61 qualified second to Don Garlits' 6.55. In the opening round, the car came up to the line ailing, and he lost to Ron Potter's 6.81. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for an eight-car show. He caught a great light in the first round, and his 7.41 beat Henry Harrison's better 7.30. Davis improved to 7.20 in the semi-final to beat Larry Brown. In the final, he faced Cliff Smith, and Davis's 7.09/205.46 scored the victory. He was at Phenix Dragway in the first week of April for the first NHRA Division 2 race. He beat Ken Kelly in the first round with a 7.44. In the semi-final, a 7.32 beat Bobby Thomas's Chevy-powered car. He faced low qualifier "Sneaky Pete" Robinson in the final. The two had a great race that saw Preston's 7.11 (Low ET) at 201.34 come out on top over Pete's 7.13/207 in his Ford-powered car. He also won the second NHRA Division 2 race held at Suffolk early in May. A 6.86/207.84 got the win over Fred Forkner, who broke in the final. Another victory came over an eight-car field at Southland Dragway. Arthur Ingelhart fouled against him in the final. Yet another win came at the third NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney. The final was between him and Robinson, who had set a new track record earlier. But Pete had problems in the final and slowed to 9.72/94 while Preston ran 7.25/199.54 to win. At the end of May, he was back at Gainesville for the next NHRA Division 2 race. He lost an engine in the opening round, but his 7.43/192.30 still beat Thomas. In the semi-final, Jim Paoli's parachute fell out on the run and slowed him to 7.90, while Davis advanced with a 7.20/198.22. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire for the final, and Charlie Moulder soloed for the win. On August 15, Davis was in Oklahoma for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.02. In the first round, he was upset by eventual winner Ronnie Martin. Preston won Division 2 in 1970. He was half of then quickest side-by-side race in history against John Wiebe at Indy 1970 (6.65 to Preston's 6.93). Preston also ran 6.744/211.76 at Dallas. His best NHRA national event times were 6.610/223.32 at Indy. |

Notes: The "Tennessee Bo-Weevil" had been a fixture at the NHRA US Nationals for 17 years when this car was built for the '72 season. Car owner Ray Godman spent $18,000 to build this 'Cuda. It had nothing but the best parts: a Woody Gilmore (RCE) 119" chassis, a KB Hemi, and Don Kirby paint. The Hemi used a stroker crank with M/T rods holding Black 5.6:1 pistons. A Lunati flat tappet cam was used. Jentzen Porting Service prepared the heads. The intake manifold, blower drive, and headers were all by Cragar, while Air Research built the GMC 6/71. Most funny cars by this time were running Enderle injection, but the "Bo-Weevil" was still using a Hilborn unit. The motor burned 98% nitro. The Lenco transmission fed the power back to a Halibrand rear end. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering. Preston Davis was at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.06. He had an easy first-round, and then in round two, Larry Arnold fouled against him. In the semifinal, Davis lost to Dale Pulde, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway in Indiana for a four-car show against Pulde, Clare Sanders in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and Gary Henderson driving the "Super Duster." I have no times for the race, but the final came down to Pulde and Sanders. Davis won the NHRA Division 2 Opener on April 9 at Phenix City. His final round 7.25/205.49 beat Paul Aray. Later in the month, he was at Blaney for another four-car match. Once again, he ran well but failed to reach the final. Preston qualified #6 at Indy at 6.547/223.88 but crossed the center line against Al Hanna in round one, and lost. He ran 6.66/213.27 at the Tulsa PRA race (where Preston was runner-up to McEwen's 6.61). Another amazing team that somehow made both races on the same weekend. Preston also ran 6.619/215.31 at NHRA Amarillo 1972. Preston had a big wheelstand at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, and when the car landed, the steering was knocked out. He ended up hitting the wall on a qualifying run. We need confirmation and location of the 6.46. |

Notes: Davis was at Beeline Dragway on January 28 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the 32-car field. He also was unable to qualify at NHRA Pomona (times not reported). Things did not go well at Lakeland on March 4 during qualifying for the IHRA Winternationals. He and Lou Azar, in the "Fireball Vega," were both about to make a qualifying run. Lou got out of shape and crossed into Preston's lane, and the Mustang ran headfirst into the Vega. Both cars were damaged pretty badly, but both drivers were ok. Preston tried and failed to qualify at NHRA Gainesville as well (times not reported). That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Davis had a bad fire in qualifying at Blaney in July for the NHRA Division 2 race. He only received a slight burn to his right hand, but the car was severely damaged. Yellow car departed from Ray's traditional red, white, blue scheme as it was painted on the coast before checking with him. |

Notes: According to Preston Davis, in an article on NHRA.com (with Phil Burgess: https://www.nhra.com/news/2014/tennessee-bo-weevil), he suffered a severe fire in the 73 Mustang sometime in 74 and retired from driving after that. He stated there was one exception: when he drove the Plymouth Arrow FC in 79 at Indy, Bristol, and Atlanta before the team retired due to escalating costs. In that case, he may not have driven the Satellite in 74 or later years. We need to confirm this. - JM |

This was the last racing season for the Bo-Weevil guys. | Dennis Simplot says that Al Swindahl built this car for Shirley Muldowney? She never ran it. DNQ at Indy 1979 at 7.160/166.66.
