Notes: This is the car that Ken Cox built for Norm in 78. They installed a Keith Black Hemi and ran it as an AA/FC in 83. Dale Suhr was his Crew Chief and Kent Sommerlott from Iowa was a crew member. At about 1:00 PM on 9/3/83 Norm ran 5.97/236.22 in qualifying at Indy. This created the first ever all 5 second funny car field for the US Nationals. In a letdown, Norm was later bumped from the top 16 and didn't get to race. Norm said that he lifted at around 1000' because he said that he couldn't see. A photographer later revealed in one of his photos that the car's roof had started to collapse on Norm, forcing him to lift early. | Norm was at Bristol on September 25 for the IHRA Fallnationals where he ran 6.19 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field.

Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show.

Notes: Won INDY Class over 22 Cars. We need to confirm if that was 1968 or 1969. Bill - Not sure about that, but Paul Day did buy the Finders built Candy Apple Red Willys in '68, blown small block BB/GS. He won the Div. 3 Super Eliminator points championship (over Bergler, Ries, Ellis, Heichel and others), but rolled it in the lights on his first pass at Tulsa World Finals. Repaired, but lost first-round. Striped paint job in 1969.
