Notes: A full-size Dart was definitely an anomaly in the gas classes, at a time when the trend was to chopped-top '33 Willys and even swoopier Opels. - RT | The car was built in Colorado in '68. Anderson moved to So-Cal in '69 and broke the ET records at all three major tracks. Sold the car, sans motor and wheels, to Keith Bush who redubbed it "Bushwacker" and raced out of the Fremont area for a few years. - BD |

Notes: Car was not powered by a 300" Chevy, but the same bored, stroked 392 that came out the previous Dart. The chassis for the Opel was perhaps constructed by M&S Welding. |

Notes: Brad and Terry built it in the M&S Welding shop. | This was the last year for this car, which a new Dart replaced in 1976. He sold to Harry Hall, who ran it on the East Coast until 1983 as the Shenandoah. Brad won BB/FC class at the 1975 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75 Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship. - RT | Set 205.94 National Record at Fremont 7/75. | In '75, the top two alcohol Funny Cars were Dale Armstrong's Satellite and Ken Veney's Vega. But Brad Anderson was pushing up right behind. He was getting stronger and stronger as the year progressed. Early in July, Brad was at Irwindale for the second NHRA Division 7 race. It was a twelve-car field, and his 7.07/198.67 beat Rich Galli in the opening round. A 7.05/199.11 beat Howard Cross in round two. But he was late in the semifinal, and his 7.05/199.11 lost to Wayne Stoeckel's 7.11/193. He really showed 'em at OCIR for the PDA Championships later in the month. He ran Low ET in qualifying at 6.79. Brad also had Top Speed at 204.80, and he was the only car to run in the sixes during eliminations. It was a 32-car field. Anderson started his run to victory by beating Larry Van Unen with a 6.86/204.80. A second-round 6.91/200.44 took out Derry O'Donovan, and in round three, his 6.94/200.44 beat Greg Bellemeur. In the semifinals, Gary Southern fouled, and Brad advanced with a 6.85/204.08. He ran 6.97/202.70 to win over Billy Bond's 7.26/185 easily in the final. It was a big win, but it would have been better if Veney or Armstrong had been in the field. In August, he won the OCIR Anniversary race by stopping Frank Harris in the "Hawkeye" Vega in the final. Up until Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Brad had not raced at any of NHRA's major races for '75. But at Indy, he was strong. His 6.77/204.54 qualified #3 behind Armstrong and Veney. He ran 6.83/204.08 to beat John Speelman's 7.03/197 in the first round, and another 6.83 at 205.47 beat Mike Kosky in round two. The turbocharged car of Chase Knight lost to Brad's 6.84/204.08 in round three (32-car field). But in the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.10/201.34 that lost to eventual winner Armstrong's 6.77/204. Ran as quick as 6.67/210 at the Ontario World Finals (eliminations). |

Notes: Brad was well overdue for an NHRA national event victory when he pulled into Pomona for the Winternationals in February. He qualified #2 with a 6.64/211.76, then ran 6.67/207.85 and 6.71/209.30 in beating Tom Lemon and Don Holm in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 6.75/212.26 to beat Jack Holsey's 6.85/206. He faced Chuck Beal in the final, and both had trouble getting traction, but Brad's 7.20/207.85 scored him his first NHRA title over Chuck's 7.39/203. It was the first of many. He was at Fremont in April for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.61/213.27 (Top Speed) qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he got derailed in the first round, where his 6.85/209.30 lost to Jimmy Scott's 6.75/208. Set both ends of the world record at the Golden Gate Nationals. Amazing speed display made Brad a participant in the FOUR fastest side by side TAFC passes in history at the World Finals (213.77 against Jon Barrett's 206.42/213.77 against Steve Chrisman's 207.37/213.27 against Chuck Beal's 208.33, and 213.77 against Gary Southern's 209.79). Notes: Brad started the season with a win at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway on January 27. He qualified #1 with a 6.60/214.79, well ahead of Chris Christensen, who was second at 6.99. In the first round, Anderson improved to 6.58/218.97 over Mike Grieco, who also improved from his qualifying 7.84 to a 6.73/213. He soloed with a 6.67/217.39 in the semifinals when Mike Haddox failed to show. This set up a final-round match with Christensen. Brad set Low ET and Top Speed while grabbing the victory with a 6.41/223.88 over Chris' 7.35/199. A week later (February 3), he held the trophy at Pomona, winning the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.32/225.11. Christensen fouled against him in the first round, and Brad advanced with a 6.36/219.40. He had a close race with Mike Andreotti in round two, but his 6.48/219.51 prevailed over Mike's 6.51/212. A 6.34/221.56 beat Grieco in the semifinals and put Brad into the final against Steve McGee. Steve had problems in the final and shut off while Brad ran 6.55/219.19 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Brad set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.25/222.88. Unfortunately, he had trouble in the first round, and his tire shaking 6.88/215.62 lost to Bogie Kell's 6.74/206. His next stop was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. Anderson's 6.51 got the pole in qualifying, and another 6.51 at 214.79 beat Grieco's 6.67/219 in the first round. In the semifinals, he set a new track record 6.36 at 220.04 (Top Speed) over John Weaver's 6.67/209. A final round 6.66/215.31 gave him another victory over Christensen's 6.81/206 runner-up effort. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Anderson won the Cajun Nationals with a 6.38/222.44 best. |

Notes: This was the car to beat in '87. In January, Brad started the year at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified #4 with a 6.56/200.00. A first-round 6.52/213.77 advanced when Kenny Mooers failed to show. In the semifinals, Brad's 6.51/210.77 beat Mike Haddox's 6.61/194. This put him into the final against Pat Austin. Brad's final round 6.57/182.18 finished second best to Austin's 6.43/215. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.49/211.11. He improved to 6.46/213.72 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Vern Moats' 6.35/222. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.38/218.76 qualified #9. He faced low qualifier Moats in the first round and got some "revenge" for his loss to him at Pomona by running 6.42/207.18 to win as Vern fouled away a 6.38. Brad didn't stick around long after that, as his off-pace 7.19/141.08 in round two lost to Bob Newberry's 6.34/222. Everything "clicked" at the inaugural NHRA Winston All-Star race held at the Texas Motorplex in the first week of April. It was an eight-car field, and Brad's 6.20/223.38 qualified second to Moats' 6.12/226. In round one, Anderson ran 6.19/224.27 to defeat Danny Townsend's 6.28/220. His competition, Harold Lewelling, broke in the semifinal, so Brad advanced with a 6.26/222.33. He faced Pat Austin in the final. Pat had beaten Moats in the semifinal. The two had a great race that saw Anderson's 6.22/224.66 get the win over Austin's 6.24/223. The following week, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's FC race. He made it into the final of the eight-car show by running 6.42/214.79 over Billy Williams and 6.44/212.76 over Bob Miner. He faced Mike Grieco in the final, and Mike was far from being the underdog as he had qualified #1 and was running quicker than Brad in every round. Sure enough, Brad's 6.45/213.77 in the final finished second best to Mike's 6.39/215. Another runner-up finish came at the second NHRA Division 7 race held at Baylands Raceway on April 26. This was a sixteen-car field, and Anderson qualified second to Grieco. In the opening round, a 6.38/217.39 took out Gary Shane's 6.60/199. He followed that up with another 6.38 at 216.34 to beat Mark Woznichak's 6.79/203 in round two. In the semifinal, he improved to 6.33/218.44 to beat Chuck Beal's 6.53/213. But in the final, he was upset by Bret Williamson. He made up for that by winning the third NHRA Division 7 race held at Famoso the following week. He had "only" qualified third for the sixteen-car field, but he picked it up once eliminations started. A 6.43/218.97 beat Williams' 6.91/206 in the first round. Round two saw a 6.45/218.97 take out Miner's 6.59/208. He ran a really close race against Williamson in the semifinal that saw both run 6.47 (Brad at 218.44), but he got the "win" light. In the final, he beat Lou Gasparelli's 6.48/215 with a 6.45/217.39. Shortly after that (May 9), he picked up another win by winning the Baylands Super Star Challenge race. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified second to Williamson. These two would meet in the final. Don Moffitt fouled against him in round one, and Brad's 6.33/215.82 advancedMiner had problems against him in the semifinal and shut off while Brad ran 6.37/215.31. In the final, he slowed to 6.43/209.79, but it was more than enough to cover Bret's 6.66/171. Another week, another win; he won the next NHRA Division 7 race held at Los Angeles Country Raceway on May 17. This race was an eight-car show, and Anderson's 6.57/208.81 qualified #1. He set Top Speed in round one with his 6.57/209.30 beating Jim Holtz's 6.88/198. An easy 6.62/207.85 beat Rick Henkelman's troubled 8.35 in the semifinal. Gasparelli's car broke in the final, so Brad set Low ET while winning, running 6.55/209.30 for the victory. Brad was the low qualifier at 1987 US Nationals at 6.235, and he ran 6.201 at Ennis Chiefs but ran into Pat Austin's 6.173. Photo from Columbus 1987. |

Notes: Anderson always had one of the strongest alcohol FCs. The '88 season was no different. In January, he started the year at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 7 opener. Brad set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.21/225.00. In the opening round, his 6.23/225.00 defeated Chuck Beal's 6.34/219. In the semi-final, Richard Hartman's 6.39/214 fell to his 6.25/225.00 (again). He went up against second qualifier Pat Austin in the final. Brad fouled on his 6.31/221.67 run while Austin's 6.23/222 got the victory. The following week, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Anderson made some impressive runs during qualifying. He ran 6.27/226.81, 6.21/225.39, and finally, a 6.17/226.64. His 6.17 qualified second to Austin's 6.14/227. In round one, a 6.20/226.81 beat Bucky Austin's 6.49/198. Another 6.20 at 227.10 took out Chris Christensen's 6.40/218 in round two. He then got Top Speed in the semi-final with his 6.148 (career-best for a very short time) at 228.25 beating Bret Williamson's 6.42/218. Brad must have been a little "gun shy" after fouling the previous week, as this time, he was late off the line, and his 6.17/227.84 lost to Austin's 6.18/227. But Brad had set both ends of the national record at 6.148/228.25. His next stop was at Baylands for its East/West meet. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11/229.00. He then ran 6.13/228.42 in the first round over Rick Henkelman's 6.35/220. In the semi-final, he ran the quickest time in history (to this point), a 6.09/228.42 over Hartman, who shut down. It looked like a no-brainer as to who would win in the final. He faced John Weaver, who had run a best of 6.36 in eliminations. Anderson's 6.09/229 were all-time bests for the class. So the final saw Weaver run an off-pace 7.63/192 while Brad blasted off a 6.15/226.70. But all was not well, as Brad had crossed the centerline, and Weaver was awarded the win. Then it was time to stop at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Brad qualified #4 with a 6.20/227.04. In round one, he improved to 6.18/224.60 over a fouling John Samolyk. In round two, Danny Townsend also fouled against him, and Brad advanced with a 6.30/223.10. But in the semi-final, it was he who turned on the red light against Austin, who ran 6.16/227 to win. After setting down all these great performances, he still didn't have a victory in the '88 season. That changed at the next NHRA Division 7 race held at Famoso. Brad's final round 6.32/221.67 (Top Speed) got the victory over Christensen's 6.33/213. Anderson had also set Low ET earlier at 6.29. He got another victory over an eight-car field at Sears Point on April 10. He had held the track record coming into this race at 6.28. His 6.31/222.22 beat Christensen's 6.31/217 in a close race in the first round. It looked like he was done in the semi-final, where he fouled on a 6.31/224.43 run against Hans Kuesel, but Hans had crossed the centerline, so Brad was reinstated on the "first or worse" rule. In the final, he set Top Speed and a new track ET record while running 6.25/225.00 in beating Mike Andreotti's 6.46/217 runner-up effort. Brad reset the speed record at Fremont WDRS on 6/88 at 231.36. The Drag Racing List, Winter 1988, Volume 3, Number 3., listed a 6.096. We need to validate the third digit of the 6.09 noted above.
