Notes: 1966 Division 5 Champ. Which car did Dave drive primarily in 1966? Ran 7.57 at Indy Nationals. | Dave was driving for Schifsky on September 25 for a best of three match race at Minneapolis against Jerry Boldenow. Dave soloed to a win in the first race with an 8.19/176.47 when Jerry lost fire, but in the second race he fouled and shut off to 8.63/145.16 while Boldenow tied up the match at one each with an 8.03/194. In the last race, Anderson lost his blower belt and Jerry won the match with an 8.25/169. |

Notes: Dave was the 1966 Division 5 Champ. The 6.86 followed by a 7.01 using an early multi-plate Crower slipper clutch (at NHRA regional event at Minneapolis in 7/67). High speed runs using a special rear-end gear. DNF due to later clutch failure (excessive heat w/full slipper clutch destroyed too many components). - Fred Becchetti. | Update 7/17: Terry thought the 6.86 was 9/67, but we found some newspaper articles about the meet and it appears it was July 1967. That is my recollection as it was one of the quickest runs at the time (below NHRA record?), but our 7.01 didn't back it up. Speed on that run was 214. Went faster later, but can use 214. ET was ahead of later 6-second runs (e.g., at US Nationals, when real slipper clutches had been developed). Partner Terry still looking for time slip. Had it/misplaced it! - FB |

Notes: Dave ran 5.577/283.01 and 5.69/219.51 at Pomona Winters 2/73. The first quarter-mile 4 4-second run was made in June 1973 by Dave Anderson and the Pollution Packer rocket dragster at National Trail. The first run might have been a mid-5-second run; the second run was the run that broke the barrier, 4.99 at 322 mph. Insane to think of those times over 50 years ago. Nobody thought a wheel-driven car would be able to achieve and exceed them. - David Weslowski | The 368 was the all-time rocket dragster quarter-mile record until Kitty O'Neil reset it in 1977. | I modified the rocket chamber out of the X-1 Rislone rocket car designed by J.C. McCormick. I made an all-new fuel and pressure system, a larger tank, increased the fuel flow, etc. We increased the thrust from 2500 lbs. To 3000 lbs. I installed the propulsion system in my Top Gas Dragster. The Tony Fox team sponsored the car. - Ky Michaelson | In 1973, he was the first to break the five-second mark on a 1/4-mile track, at 4.99 seconds, and a Top Speed at the finish line of 322 mph. | At the 1973 US Nationals, he recorded a career best time of 4.62 seconds at 344 mph, the latter remaining the highest speed ever clocked at an NHRA national event. The 368 from Kitty O'Neil newspaper report when she went 394. | Died in a crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway in March 1974, also killing two crew members from another team. |

Notes: Killed on March 30/1974 while making an exhibition run on the eighth mile pit road at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Lost control at end of run due to presumed mechanical failure and crashed into support vehicles before hitting concrete wall. Two support crewmen also died as a result of the crash. A veteran shoe with 20 years of drag racing behind him, in 1973 he was the first to break the five second mark on a quarter-mile track, at 4.99 seconds. |

Anderson faced the injected funny car of #7 qualifier Mike Cotter, Anderson would win with a 7.93 after Cotter went red & ran 8.39. Anderson faced #4 qualifier Howard Hooper in round 2. Notes: At the NHRA WCS at Bonneville, Anderson defeated Joe Joe Shalkowski, Tim Cole in the Semis & George Pugh in the final to leave with the trophy. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Anderson qualified #6 with a 10.378 (0.622 Under) & Defeated #22 qualifier Jack Gibson in round 1 but lost to #14 Qualifier Jack Mullins in round 2. At the Northstar Nationals in Brainerd, Anderson qualified #13 with a 9.968 (0.372 Under). He defeated #27 qualifier Don Buerkle in Round 1 & #20 qualifier David Nickens in round 2. He faced #2 qualifier Larry Morgan in Round 3 where Anderson lost to the eventual runner up. At the Fallnationals in Phoenix, Anderson once again qualified #13 with a 9.871 (0.469 Under). He would defeated #29 qualifier Norman Neil in round 1 with a 9.97/134.52 to advance to Round 2 & once again face Larry Morgan who was the #5 qualifier where once again Anderson would lose. At the NHRA World Finals, Anderson qualified #16 with a 9.773 (0.427 Under) but would red light in round 1 against #32 qualifier Scott McClay. |
