Notes: Bill started the season at NHRA Gainesville, where he was a DNQ alternate at 8.690/159.85. At NHRA Columbus, he also failed to qualify with a vastly improved 8.187/168.83. He improved slightly more at Englishtown but still was the last alternate at 8.120/170.45. Bill also failed to qualify at Indy with best times of 8.162/171.92. Notes: Dempsey was one of 53 cars trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran a career-best (to this point) 7.791/180.61, but it was far from cracking the 7.41 "bump." Dempsey ran a 7.75 at the 1988 IHRA race at Atco, where he ended up in the second alternate spot. Bill attempted to qualify at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, but his 7.85 best failed to make the show. He also attempted to qualify at the following NHRA events: 7.838/177.58 at the Summernationals and 8.524/171.85 at the Keystone Nationals.
