Notes: Finished number 4 in IHRA. | Denton went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but his 8.62/157 best(second alternate) failed to qualify. Harold ran 8.39/162 to qualify #4 at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. An opening round 8.91/160 beat Keith Albritten's quicker 8.88/155, and he eased off to a 9.38/129 in round two when Charles Crawford fouled against him. He came up against eventual winner Lee Edwards in the semifinals, and his 8.52/162 lost to Edwards' 8.35/166. He won the IHRA Dixie Nationals held at Atlanta Dragway on May 21. His 8.45 qualified #2 behind Ronnie Sox's 8.33. He faced Billy Ewing in the final, and Denton was the favorite based on semifinal times(8.57 to 8.75). Sure enough, an 8.55/160.14 got him the victory over Ewing's 8.63/157. Things didn't go nearly as smooth at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Harold "only" qualified #10 with an 8.63, and he lost to Edwards in the opening round of eliminations.

Notes: After "Dyno Don" Nicholson dominated the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with 7.8 times, he decided it was a good time to sell his racing operation. Harold Denton stepped in and bought it. Just two weeks later, he was at Bristol along with Nicholson, who was there to help out for the IHRA Springnationals. Denton ran a strong 7.99/172.41 to qualify #3, and an opening-round 8.04 advanced. This made Denton the sixth member of the Holley Seven-Second club. Another 8.04 in round two beat Keith Albritten's 8.23. He showed that he could drive in the semifinals, running an 8.11 to beat Rickie Smith's quicker 8.03. This put him into the final against Warren Johnson driving Jerome Bradford's Monte Carlo. Unfortunately, Denton's clutch went away, and he had to settle for the runner-up spot. He competed at Connecticut's Mountain Motor Nationals in July but got out of shape against Roy Hill in the first round and lost. Early in August, Denton was back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Just as NHRA had its four major competitors, Bob Glidden, Lee Shepherd, Frank Iaconio, and WJ, who won all the races, IHRA had four "top dogs" in '81. They were Smith, Ronnie Sox, WJ, and Denton. They qualified in that order at Bristol, and in the second round, Harold ran 8.09/171 to advance. He fouled against eventual winner Sox in the semifinal, where his 8.22 would have been hard-pressed to keep pace with Ronnie's 8.06. Shortly after that, he was at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. Twenty-three cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and while he qualified easily, he lost early in eliminations. In September, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to Sox again.
