He made the finals with times of 6.64/209, 6.63/208.33, and lost on a holeshot to Charlie Byers’ 6.71 with a quicker 6.69/208.81. Baton Rouge was second D4 race of the year. Notes: Dal took over driving duties from Bill Wendt after Bill injured his hip while water skiing. Denton was at the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge in Ennis on 8/1/87, where he qualified #3 with a 6.43/219.61. In Round 1 he defeated #7 Qualifier Buster Chandler 6.38/220.58 to Chandler's losing 6.51/215.51. In the Semis, Denton ran 6.37/220.48 but lost on a Holeshot to #1 Qualifier & Eventual Runner Up Don Gay Jr. & his 6.38/217.81. He would win the Armadillo Nationals at Houston International Dragway on 9/20/87. At the NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals at Ennis, Dal qualified #4 6.226/222.33. In Round 1, Dal would face #12 Qualifier Dan Nimmo. Denton would get the victory with a 6.249/224.32 after Nimmo red-lighted and ran a 6.351. Denton would face #16 Qualifier Jackie Stidham in Round 2 & would win with a 6.262/224.49 to Stidham's losing 6.371/212.01. A 6.37/223.26 beat Buster Chandler's 6.48/213 in the opening round. In the semi-final, he improved to 6.31/224.10, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner Don Gay Jr's 6.25/220. Dal Denton won the 1988 IHRA World Championship in his own car. Dal drove for Simpson for part of the year in NHRA races.
