Notes: This car made its debut in the fall of 1972 and was Hemi powered when it ran its best numbers at Ontario Motor Speedway during the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. Larry qualified fifteenth at 6.260/223.82, but mechanical difficulties kept him from making the first-round match-up with eventual race winner Don Moody. Although disappointed in not making the first-round Larry and the "Real Don Steele" crew were happy to accept the "Best Appearing Car" award from the NHRA. Don Steele was a TV, Radio personality in Southern California. /Team also made some runs with an Arias hemi-head Chevy engine.

Notes: Don Steele was a radio personality. The Howards Cams Rat. Ran 6.14/204.54 and 6.21/193.96 at PRO NY National in August 1974. Ran 6.07 at Sacramento. | Larry started the '74 season at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. There was no qualifying as the positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars in the field were members of Cragar's Five Second Club. Larry drew Don Moody in his first-round race and Moody fouled, advancing Dixon into the semifinal. In his semifinal race, he ran Tommy Ivo, who smoked the tires to a 7.74 and Larry won with a 6.65/193.96. In the final, he was up against the "Old Man," Don Garlits. Larry's Chevy lost a blower on the line and Garlits took the victory with a 6.38/226. The team did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals, but Larry ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #15 in the 32-car field with a 6.37. An opening round 6.51 beat Bob Williams' 6.62 and he made an easy pass in round two when Jeb Allen fouled. In round three, the Chevy finally met its match as he lost to Gary Beck. He disappeared from the qualifying lists for the early part of the year as the team was "dialing in" their Chevy powerplant and they failed to qualify at quite a few shows, but the team made the field at the OCIR Nitro Jam held at the end of June. Dixon beat Gary Hazen's 6.66 in the first round, with a 6.47 and in round two, a quick-leaving 6.40/218.97 beat James Warren's 6.36/229. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Bradley's 5.97 in the semifinals. The following week (July 6), he was back at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. An opening round 6.38/205.47 beat Gary Ritter's 6.43/219, but in the second round, Leland Kolb's 6.32/225 stopped his 6.39/207.85. The team had a great NHRA Indy event. They qualified #17 at 6.193/215.31, then got a holeshot win in round one, at 6.205/214.79 over Jerry Ruth's 6.144/234.37. Larry then defeated Sarge Arciero, 6.179/215.82 to a shut off 8.67 at 1999. Gaines Markley finally ended the Chevy’s day in round three, 6.167/237.46 to 6.272/209.30. The team qualified #8 at the World Finals at 6.011/226.70, but nemesis Markley got them in the first round, 6.08/220 to 6.30/198.

He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 6.80. An opening round 6.52/179 hurt some parts, but he still advanced as his competition, Arly Langlo, smoked the tires and shut off. The engine was too badly hurt to run the second round. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. There, his 6.42/216 qualified #12. An impressive 6.16/223 in the first round, beat Gary Beck's quicker 6.14/234. He got even quicker in round two, where his 5.99/226 beat Jim Plummer. Unfortunately, Larry smoked the tires in the semifinals, and his 7.97 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.96. His next stop was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11, but in the first round, his off-pace 6.73 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 6.34. Beeline hosted the NHRA sanctioned Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. A 6.19/223.32 qualified the Chev #12 in the field. But in the first round, both he and his opponent, Jerry Ruth, smoked the tires. Ruth's 6.40/199 came out on top over Dixon's 6.49/225.00. No Chevy-powered cars could qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and Larry had to watch from the sidelines. On February 21, he was at OCIR's East vs. West meet. Dixon wasn't in competition, but when Rick Ramsey had a blower explode in the first round, of the six-car match race, his car was pressed into service. He ran Beck in his first race, and the Chev's 7.49/179.64 lost to Gary's motor blowing 6.42/185. In his second race, he improved a lot, running 6.26/233.16 to beat Muldowney's shut-off, 10.50-61. The following day he was at Fremont for its East vs. West show. Once again, it was a six-car round-robin show. An opening round 6.27/225.56 beat James Warren's 6.58/196. A second-round 6.36/223.32 beat Bradley who blew a head gasket. In the third race, his 6.48/226 beat Ken Moitoza who shut down to 10.52. Dixon was declared the winner of the race based on wins in the competition. Larry was at Portland in May for the Oregon Open. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.11 and lost to Hank Johnson in the opening round. The next day(May 8), he was at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. The qualifying had been done on May 2, but it rained, and the race was postponed one week. Larry qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field at 6.28/206.89. He had the only Chevy-powered car in the field. In round one, his 6.38/222.77 beat Gaines Markley's 6.60/189. In round two, his 6.26/214.28 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.23/235. He was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.30 best ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He won the OCIR Nitro Championships held on June 26. He stopped Randy Allison in the final. He was at Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships in July, but his 6.52 in the first round, lost to Johnson's 6.42. On the NHRA trail, Larry did not qualify at Pomona (times not reported), fourth alternate DNQ at Columbus (6.306/225.00), and #32 qualifier at Indy at 6.352/225.00. Larry improved mightily in round one, to upset Rob Bruins, 6.136/233.76 to 6.174/240.64. He then lost to Jerry Ruth in round two, 6.044/231.95 to 6.378/205.47. Larry then did not qualify at the Fallnationals (times not reported) and at the World Finals, where he ran a nice 6.100/231.95 for the third alternate slot.

Notes: Ran 5.922 Indy US Nationals 9/79. | Larry showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #12, but in round one, he lost to eventual winner Bob Noice. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.07/233.16 qualified #9 which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shirley Muldowney. The lady won their race with a 6.24/245 over Larry's 6.28/238.72. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Englishtown, beating Larry Bucher in the final. At the rain-delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals, Dixon qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him another first-round race with the low qualifier for the show. It was Muldowney again and once again she beat him in the opening round. Over 30 Top Fuel teams showed up to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals and a 6.02/227.27 qualified Larry in the #7 spot. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.24/205.47 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.02/240 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. On June 24 he was at Maryland International for another NHRA Division 1 race. This time he finished runner-up to Howard Haight. He then won the Divisional race at Suffolk where he stopped Bobby Hilton driving the "Jim and Allison Lee" car in the final. Back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Larry ran 6.04/240.00 to qualify #15. He was still having trouble getting past the first-round in national events and once again he lost in the opening round, this time to Don Garlits. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where a 6.07/234.37 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.13 lost to eventual winner Tharp's 5.90. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race held at Maple Grove, Dixon lasted until the semifinals before he lost to Kerry Sweigert. At the final Division 1 race at New England, Larry beat Ron Mumma in the first round, with a 6.15/238.72, but a sub-par 6.43/229.59 in the semifinals lost to Muldowney's 6.07/240. It was then off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where a 5.92/243.90 qualified #15 for the 32-car field. He beat Hilton in the first round, to get past his first-round jinx and in round two a 5.99/241 beat Garlits who smoked the tires. In round three, a 5.97/241.28 beat Dave Settles close 6.01/238 in the "Blue Max" dragster. A 6.03 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown's 5.85. Still, it was a very good outing for the team. They then went to Gainesville for the final NHRA Division 2 race. The field had only seven cars show for the eight available spots. Dixon qualified #1 with a 6.37 and took the odd-lot solo in the first round, and ran 6.58/206.89. He had another easy run in the semifinals when Marvin Schwartz failed to fire and a 6.27/226.13 advanced. He faced Hilton in the final where his 6.68/234.37 lost to Bobby's 6.29/234. The next stop was at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Larry qualified #7 with a 5.94/243.24. An easy 6.20/231.95 won his first-round race when Dwight Salisbury broke a transmission. But in round two, Doug Kerhulas' 6.07/223 beat his 6.10/233.16. The season didn't end the greatest for Dixon. He went to Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals and ran a strong 5.99/232.55 to qualify #5 for the show, but in the first round, his opponent Terry Capp had his brakes fail and he rolled through the lights. Larry was able to solo into round two, but on his pass he crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The team did run well enough to finish the season #8 in the NHRA standings.
