Notes: 9.70-9.60's at 140. Got Runner-Up in Super Eliminator at 70 Winternationals. The car was rare in that it relied on a manual 4-speed with a blown motor. A testament to Dondero's skill.

Notes: Qualified at Indy 1972 with a 9.734 then went quicker during eliminations. | Shortly after taking over the driving duties of Dyno’s Maverick, Dondero went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.44 and picked up to a first-round 9.43/145.63. In the semifinals, he ran another strong 9.46/145.39, but lost to Butch Leal's track record 9.40 at 146. Ken qualified #2 with a 9.461/144.69 at the Gatornationals. A first-round 9.51/143.08 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.71/141. In round two, a 9.57 beat Stuart McDade's 9.65. But in the semifinals, a 9.54/143.31 lost to Don Carlton's 9.55/143. He stopped off at Englishtown for an eight-car show, but after beating Carmen Rotonda in the first round, with a 9.66/142.63 it rained and the race was called off. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. At the USRT race at Capitol Raceway, Dondero qualified #6 with a 9.55. He ran a best of 9.52/144.95 before losing in round two. He ran a 9.58/142.85 best at the Super Stock Nationals, but lost early. A 9.62 qualified Ken #6 at the IHRA Summernationals and another 9.60 got him through round one, but he lost to his boss Don Nicholson in round two. At the US Nationals, a 9.73/140.84 qualified him #7. On September 10 in Toronto for the second annual All-Pro Nationals, Ken set a 9.56 track record at 145.16 while winning the event. - RH

Notes: We need to confirm who owned this car. We think Don ran this car at the 1972 Supernationals, where he ran 9.605/142.40, but lost in round one, to Barrie Poole, 9.39 to 9.61. He definitely ran it at the 1973 Pomona Winters.

Notes: Ken was in Connecticut in April for a best of three match against Mike Fons in the "Motown Missile." Despite being viewed as the "underdog" in this match. Ken came out on top. Dondero was at Englishtown in June for an eight-car event. All cars were to run three rounds of racing. In his first race, a 9.27/145.65 beat Rich Maskin who lost an engine in his Hornet. Ken's 9.26/147.29 in his second race lost to Paul Blevins' 9.15/147. In his last race, Dondero got out on Eddie Schartman, where Ken's 9.28/147.78 held off "Fast Eddie's" quicker 9.20/147. Ran 9.180/147.05 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/73. Photo from 1973 Pro Stock Match Racing, US 131, Martin, Michigan, with Don Nicholson tuning.

Notes: Ken drove this car at the 1973 NHRA Winternationals. Did it race in 1972, too? Ken ran 9.657/142.85 to qualify #16 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The race was rained out and he did not return for the rain date. Don raced at Indy and qualified #8 at 9.180/147.05 but lost to Arlen Vanke in round one, when he crossed the center line. He raced Don Nicholson's second Pinto at Ontario.

Notes: Ken ran an 8.98 to qualify #5 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, a 9.08/152.02 beat Tim McNally's 10.25/128. A second round 9.10/152.54 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.91/152. Ken then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he again ran an 8.98 (152.02) in qualifying. That number was good for the #4 spot in the field. He slowed to a 9.31/148.02 in the first round, that lost to Scott Shafiroff's 9.18/150.

Notes: AHRA Pro Stock Champion in 75/76. Comp number #1005 in AHRA. Dondero raced the Vega for Jenkins in '74 and '75, then a Monza in '76, totally dominating AHRA Pro Stock. For sale ad in April 1975 offered this car turn-key with the 354-inch motor that set the AHRA world record at 8.76/157.03 at NHRA legal weight. Confirmed 8.85 at West Salem, Ohio. | Ken was at OCIR on March 16 for the AHRA Grand American West. He qualified #1 with an 8.85 and then ran a solo 8.90/154.37 in round one. Dondero improved to an 8.79 AHRA record at 155.17 in round two to beat Lee Hunter. An 8.82 in the semifinals beat Gordie Rivera and moved him into the final against Gary Hansen. Ken got the win as well as the other end of the AHRA record with an 8.83/156.79 over Gary's 9.23. He won the next AHRA race as well, the Southwest Grand American at Tulsa. A 9.06/152.54 qualified #1, and he reached the final, where he faced the second qualifier, Larry Huff. The Vega ran a consistent 9.08/152.28 in the final to beat Huff's 9.13/151. The AHRA victories continued at the Grandnationals at Dragway 42 in May. Of course, Ken qualified #1 with an 8.85 (Low ET) at 154.10. He only needed to run 9.10 in round one to beat Jim Halloran, while a 9.00 in the semifinals beat Dave Kanners' quicker 8.93. This put Dondero in the final against Joe Satmary's big-block Camaro. An 8.94/154.90 by the Vega in the final was more than enough to beat Satmary's 9.12/153 for the title.

Notes: AHRA world champion in 1975 and 1976. Dondero raced the Vega for Jenkins in '74 and '75 then a Monza in '76, totally dominating AHRA Pro Stock. | Dondero was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #2 with an 8.71. He advanced past the first-round easily and in the second round his 9.06 dropped Roy Hill's 9.18. But in the semifinals, he lost to Warren Johnson's 8.99/153 with a 9.04/150.75. He then went to Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He ran 8.77 and 8.80 to reach the finals where he would get another chance at WJ. Warren had been running much quicker (8.65 and 8.63) during eliminations and was favored to win. But in the final, WJ fouled away an amazing 8.54/160.71 that handed the win to Dondero at 8.80/156.25. At Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals, the final would again come down to these two. Ken out qualified Warren, running 8.83/155.70 for the pole, but Johnson was close behind at 8.90/155. During eliminations, Dondero had run 9.09/142.85 and 8.88/154.10. WJ was just a bit quicker with times of 8.87/153 and 8.86/155. It was a close final, but Warren's 8.80/155 prevailed over Dondero's 8.87/154. Ken then went to Detroit where he won the AHRA Grandnationals by stopping Wally Booth in the final. The AHRA Springnationals were run at St. Louis and Ken set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with an 8.77/156.23. Once again, he reached the final and this time a 9.04/151.50 gave him the victory over Jerry Haas' 9.15/149. Not sure if I can believe the times turned at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. Everyone’s times were two tenths lower here than they had ever run before. But the reported numbers for Dondero were 8.53 in qualifying #1, and then an opening round 8.50 followed by an 8.54 in the semifinals. He faced Bobby Marriott in the final and won with an unheard of 8.45. Green Valley times were often suspect.

Notes: AHRA Champion. | Dondero was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5 with an 8.99. A first-round 8.97/150.75 beat Danny Leavitt's 9.38. In the second round, his 9.10/151.26 was no match for eventual winner Larry Lombardo's 8.84/153. Ken qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 8.866/153.84, but he lost to Don Nicholson in the first round, 8.90/155 to a shut off 9.57/119. The "Gapp and Roush" team had one of their better outings of 1977 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Ken qualified #8 at 8.90/152.28, and then best Lee Edwards in round one. He then advanced into the semifinals after Bob Glidden broke in round two. But in the semis, the Pinto could only produce a 9.11 that lost to Wally Booth's 8.98. That was Ken's last NHRA national event of the year. He ran 8.88 at AHRA St. Louis.

Notes: Ken ran 7.772/178.57 to qualify #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced low qualifier Butch Leal in the first round, and his 7.838/178.21 finished second best to Leal's 7.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 7.734/177.51. Ken had an unusual race in the first round. He raced alternate Reid Whisnant, who got into the field when Sam Carroll broke in qualifying. Dondero ran a 7.814/175.78 in their first-round race, but Reid recorded an unreal (maybe too unreal) 7.615 at only 174.41 to win. Observers suspected a rear-wheel start (the rear wheel broke the beam instead of the front). In the second round, Reid slowed to a 7.89 loss. It was a fabulously close race - Dondero's .450 to .646 holeshot meant that only .003 seconds separated the cars at the finish line! Pretty sure Ken wasn't too happy about it. And Reid's 7.615 was not equaled again on the NHRA national event trail until the end of the year when Bob Glidden duplicated it. The third NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta, where a 7.830/178.92 qualified Ken in the #8 spot. He advanced past round one with a 7.88/176.47 when Roy Hill fouled against him. In round two, he beat Leal with a 7.833/177.51, but in the semifinals, he lost to Don Campanello., who stepped up to a 7.835 to hold off Ken's 7.869/176.47. This was another heartbreaker - Dondero again got the holeshot, .480 to .510, and the end result was a .004 second win for Campanello The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 7.773/177.86 qualified #7, but a 7.886/177.16 in the opening round of eliminations lost to Mark Yuill's quick-leaving 7.945/173.07 (a margin of victory of .034 seconds). Dondero then stopped off at Capitol raceway to win its Pro Stock Shootout event. He beat Ronnie Manchester in the final. He was at Martin, Mich, for the PHR Championships, where he ran 7.73 to qualify #3. Once again, he lost out early, back on the NHRA trail for the Springnationals. He qualified #8 at 7.843/177.86. Ken won round one over Andy Mannarino (7.814/173.47 to 7.939/174.08) and made it into round two, losing to Mark Yuill again when he ran an off-pace 9-second run. Shortly after that, he picked up a win at the Super Stock Nationals held at Maple Grove. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.73/179.28 qualified #2 behind WJ's 7.69/180. Ken ran another 7.73 in the first round, to take out Joe Anderson and a semifinal 7.75 stopped the only Mopar in the show, Reid Whisnant's. He faced Don Campanello in the final, and Dondero was like a bracket racer, running 7.75/177.16 to win over Don's 7.80/174. Another second-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where Ken qualified #5 with a 7.725/180.36. Ken beat Roy Hill in round one, 7.764/179.28 to 7.89/177, but he lost to eventual winner WJ in round two, 7.720/181.81 to 7.781/178.92. He qualified third at the NHRA Summernationals with a 7.704/180.00, but he got upset in the first round, by Manchester, 7.74/177 to 7.830/177.51. He did not go to Denver. Ken qualified #9 at Brainerd with a 7.850/175.78. That put him up against Bob Glidden in round one, and Bob got the win, 7.73/178, to Ken's 7.823/177.16. At the US Nationals at Indy, his 7.778/182.55 qualified #11. In round one, Ken's 7.793/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 7.84/175. He cut a good light in round two, and his 7.822/180.00 held on to win over Joe Lepone's quicker 7.798/177 (.025 second margin of victory). His run ended in the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 7.72 beat his 7.825/176.81. In October, he ran a 7.766/178.92 to qualify eighth at the NHRA World Finals. Amazingly, Mark Yuill got another massive holeshot on him in round one, and eeked out the win, 7.850/174.41 to 7.758/179.28 (.005 seconds margin of victory). Ken had so many close, close races that he either won or lost on holeshots. A great showing for the Panella Racing team in 1984; they finished 7th in the NHRA.

Notes: Ken ran 7.680/182.70 to qualify #7 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He beat Don Campanello in the first round with a 7.673/180.28, while in round two, his 7.703/176.40 beat Don Coonce. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 7.59/171 with a 7.723/176.40. At the Gatornationals, a 7.735/179.42 qualified #10, but a 7.697/178.57 lost to Warren Johnson's 7.55/183 in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Dondero qualified #6 with a 7.772/178.92. He beat Coonce in the first round with a 7.786/178.00, but he fouled and shut down to 10.067 in a loss to Butch Leal in round two. Ken dominated the show at Bakersfield for the March (May?) Meet. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.74/183.29. A 7.84/174.41 in the first round beat Chuck Echmalian, and a semifinal 7.83/182.18 advanced when Harry Scribner fouled. He beat Jerry Eckman's 7.86/174 with a 7.79/182 for the victory in the final. Ken qualified #8 with a 7.714/178.42 at the Cajun Nationals. A 7.805/176.40 in the first round defeated Frank Sanchez, who got out of shape. He then beat Tony Christian in round two with a 7.883/161.00 after putting more than a one-tenth of a second holeshot on Tony. In the semifinal, his 7.786/177.65 lost to WJ's 7.62/181. Ken slipped a little further down the qualifying list at the Springnationals, only qualifying #15 with a 7.768/173.67. Bill Jenkins was tuning here. In round one, his 7.893/173.94 lost to Gordie Rivera's 7.843/176. Ken went to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals the following week (June 23). It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #3 with a 7.78. Another 7.78 in the first round beat Nick Nikolis' 7.81. In the semifinals, he ran a consistent 7.79/177.51 but lost to WJ's 7.65/180. Ken went to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran a 7.718/180.57 to qualify #15. In the first round, he lost to Dempsey Hardy's 7.75/176 with a 7.77/171.36. At the Summernationals, a 7.723/179.14 qualified #12. He broke against Gordie Rivera in the first round. That was followed by a trip to Denver for the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #11 with an 8.117/171.42. In the first round, his 8.165/171.75 lost to Coonce's 8.061/169.81. The next stop on the NHRA calendar was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Dondero qualified #12 with a 7.800/180.36. In round one, he improved to 7.721/179.28 to beat Gene Fasching. In round two, Christian's 7.732/179.64 beat his 7.793/174.75. Everybody was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and Ken barely made the show. His 7.761/181.52 qualified on the "bump." He went home early when he fouled away a 7.795/176.95 in the first round against Frank Iaconio. Ken swapped into Ronnie Manchester's car for a few late-season races. He was driving this car at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Twenty-nine cars were attempting to qualify, and his 7.626/181.52 qualified #10. Despite running well, a 7.671/179.49 in the first round lost to WJ's 7.57/183. According to our records, Ken was back in the Dondero car at the Phoenix Fallnationals. He qualified #3 at 7.670/179.28. Ken best Gordie Rivera in round one, 7.766/177.86 to 8.355/130.43. In round two, he beat Frank Sanchez, 7.756/178.21 to 7.866/176.12. In the semis, Bob Glidden got the better of Ken, 7.671/180.36 to 7.804/177.86. Ken was driving a Trans Am at the World Finals at Pomona. We must validate whether this was the Ronnie Manchester car or a new Panella machine. He qualified #3 at 7.635/181.30. He broke in round one, but Dave Hutchens fouled, so Ken advanced. In round two, he beat Pete Smith, 7.721/179.71 to 7.867/178.07. Ken lost a close one to Bruce Allen in the semis, 7.652/181.23 to 7.678/180.21. We are listing the Finals times with the Ronnie Manchester car for now, but we need confirmation. The Camaro's validated best NHRA times were at Pomona at 7.673/182.70, and the Bakersfield 183.29 was its fastest speed. At this time, we are listing the 7.670 from Phoenix with this car, although there is a possibility there was a new Dondero Trans Am that should get those times, plus those from the World Finals. Who can answer this mystery?

Notes: Ken swapped into Ronnie Manchester's car for a few late-season races. At this time, we are listing the 7.670 from Phoenix with this car, although there is a possibility there was a new Dondero Trans Am that should get those times, plus those from the World Finals. Who can answer this mystery?

Notes: Ken debuted Bob Panella's new Firenza at the NHRA Winternationals. For its maiden outing, he did pretty well. There were 37 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Dondero qualified #7 with a 7.58/181.45. A 7.59/179.64 beat Dave Hutchens' 7.67/179 in round one, but in the second round, he fouled against Butch Leal. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 7.65/182.40 to qualify #14. He lost to Jerry Eckman's 7.59/177 in the first round, with a 7.69/179.78. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Ken qualified #11 with a 7.65/181.52. He lost to Bruce Allen in the first round. Early in June, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 7.63/181.89 qualified #9 which paired him up against Warren Johnson in the first round. In their race, WJ’s 7.68/182 beat Dondero's 7.71/181.30. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 7.59/179.17, but an off-pace 7.78/174.45 lost to Frank Iaconio's 7.74/179 in the opening round. His best NHRA National event numbers were 7.542 at Englishtown and the 182.40 from Gainesville.
