Notes: Just 18 years old, Douglass built the dragster in six months. He first installed a '56 Chevy engine, but wasn't pleased with the results, even though he set the strip record at Hixson with 123 mph. Just a week before the big race at Chester, he installed a '57 Chevy engine in the dragster. At Chester on July 5, he won the A/D class with 128.57 mph. In the run for top eliminator, he was soundly beat by Don Garlits. Of that race, Douglass said, "He was a third of the strip ahead of me when he crossed the finish line." On Aug. 10 at the Brainerd Optimist Strip at Hixson, he took top eliminator with a new strip record of 130.959 mph. On Sep. 28 at Hixson, he won top eliminator with 12.95 at 128.571 mph.
