Notes: Bob was driving the "A&W" car at Lions on March 27 for a sixteen car show. He fouled against Danny Ongais in the first round. He was back at Lions on April 17. He qualified #8 for the sixteen-car field with an 8.03/189.46. He singled in the opening round, and in the second, his off-pace 8.33/186.32 lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.80/198. The following day he was at San Fernando, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with an 8.20. But he had hurt some parts doing it, and he could not run in eliminations. They debuted a new car in July 1965.

In the first round, he cooled it with a 9.03/112.21 when Paul Sutherland lost fire. In the semifinals, he ran 7.59/204.54, but lost to Ken Safford's 7.58/205 in Ted Gotelli's car. One week later, on May 14, he was back at Lions for a sixteen-car show where he again qualified #3, this time with a 7.64. He advanced past the first-round with a 7.86/198.22 when Don Hampton broke. Notes: Downey was at Beeline Dragway at the end of January for the AHRA Winternationals. Over 100 cars were attempting to qualify for the 32-car field and his 7.79 qualified #9. He beat Jack Ewell in the opening round, and Ron Rivero fouled against him in round two. In round three, his 7.72/200.44 defeated Hank Westmoreland. Don Cook then fouled against him in the semifinal, and Bob found himself going up against low qualifier Connie Kalitta in the final. The big overhead cam Ford engine ran much quicker than the "Howard Cam" car during eliminations, and it stayed that way in the final where Downey's 8.0/196.50 finished runner-up to Kalitta's 7.63/196. At Pomona, a 7.490/214.78 qualified #29. His 7.608/209.30 in round one lost to Jerry Ruth's 7.36/213. He also was at Riverside for the HRM Championships, where his 7.45/213.28 in the first round lost to Jimmy Nix's 7.27/212.

Notes: Downey was at Beeline Dragway in January for the AHRA Winternationals. It was reported that 92 cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field. Bob qualified, but he got out of shape in the opening round of eliminations and lost to Leroy Goldstein. He went to Pomona, where the car count was still high(80 cars for 32 spots)for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.10/220.04 qualified #12. A 7.12/220.58 in the first round, beat Dennis Baca's 7.21/200. Despite running a strong 7.11/201.78 in round two, he lost to the eventual winner James Warren's 7.08/222. He competed at the PDA Championships held at OCIR on March 3. He easily qualified for the 64-car show, but he lost early. Shortly after that, he was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.048 qualified #12 for the 32-car show. Unfortunately, he fouled in the opening round against Dominic Cardoza. Bob was in Leland Kolb's car at Indy.

Bob was at an eight-car show at Lions on May 31. He qualified #2 with a 7.75, and in the first round, his 7.74/185.56 beat Ralph Knight's 7.88/182. In the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.69 at only 170.71 in beating Frank Britt's 8.07/183. He went up against all-conquering Don Enriquez in the final. Notes: Downey was at OCIR for the first All-Pro race. The eight-car field had a tough 6.79 bump, but he qualified for the show only to lose an engine in his first-round race against eventual winner John Wiebe. He failed to qualify for the second All-Pro race. Downey was at Lions in August for the Motorola Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.59/222.77 in the opening round lost to Glen O'Neil's 6.74/166. Bob qualified #8 at 6.720/205.47 at the NHRA Supernationals, his only national event of the season. He broke against Chip Woodall in round one. The 6.43/236.84 numbers need confirmation.
