Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. | Jim qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.21/235.60. He won the Bakersfield March Meet at Famoso. A 6.18/227.84 beat Tom McEwen and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/228.42 to beat Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. In the final, he ran the low qualifier (6.04) Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" smoked the tires and Jim ran 6.35/231.95 for the victory. In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.07/226.70. In round one, he repeated that time with a 6.07 at 231.95 to beat Ron Williams. In the semifinals, he lost to Sherm Gunn. At the third NHRA Division 6 race at OCIR, Jim ran 6.29/230.76 to qualify #6. He smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch. |

Notes: Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Elroy Airport for an eight-car show shortly after that. It was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was rough, to say the least. Jim qualified #2 with a 7.00/211.76. A 7.12 in the first round, beat Jack Maroney, while his 7.10/217.38 (Top Speed) beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. He faced Craig Epperly in the final, and Dunn's vast experience from years of racing on poor tracks made the difference as he ran 7.01/216.86 to pick up the win over Epperly, who smoked the tires and lost. As mentioned, he qualified well at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he got crossed up against Bob Pickett in the first round, and shut off. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals to run an eight-car show at OCIR being run the same day (March 15). Dunn qualified #1 with a 6.24/229.59 and went on to win, stopping Rodney Flournoy in the final. He had also set Low ET at 6.18. On April 5, he was at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.19/227.84, but he smoked the tires in round one, and lost to Shumake. OCIR hosted the next Western Regional, and Jim qualified #3 for the race with a 6.28/229.00. In the first round, Sherm Gunn had problems and shut off while Jim took it easy with a 7.03/196.50 to advance. He lost to the meet's eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Dunn's 6.32/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.17/238. At the end of June, he was at Sacramento for another Western Regional event. His 6.26/214.29 qualified second to Gordie Bonin's 6.24/236. These two would work their way into the final together. In the opening round, Jim's 6.28/218.96 defeated John Force's 6.87/181. In the semifinal, Hank Johnson's 6.48/221 lost to his 6.25/211.27. Both he and Bonin had been close in times during eliminations, with Bonin having a slight edge. It stayed that way as Bonin's 6.16/237 got the victory over Dunn's 6.19/213.38. Jim won the NHRA World Finals and was runner-up to Raymond beadle at the US Nationals. Bakersfield at 6.286/224.43. Ran 6.050/238.72 at OCIR Finals. Jim won the 1981 OCIR World Finals over Gary Burgin. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. This one is wild, here it goes guys: old mag (I believe Hot Rod) had Jim driving for Mike very early in the year at a match race in SoCal. It specifically mentioned that the 5.85 he ran was identical to Mike's 5.85 (within a month or so of one another). Both runs were considered suspect by their competitors. | Video shows the actual run, including the scoreboard and announcer claiming the run was the quickest in history. Raced against Prudhomme's yellow Pepsi Challenger. | Jim drove Roland Leong's car at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in Jan while Mike was on tour in Australia. He ran the 5.85 and made it to the final where he faced Bob Pickett. Bob won with a 6.25 over Jim's off-pace 6.99. |

Notes: Jim's TR-3 sponsorship ran for part of the 1982 season but did not transfer to the new Camaro later in the year. Photo from Pomona, CA 1982. | Dunn started the season at OCIR for the Grand Premiere race. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline in his first-round race and lost to Tom Ridings. Jim was first alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.164/236.22 in qualifying. He also attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, listing the car as a Horizon on his entry blank. His 6.338/223.42 was the sixth alternate there. A 6.30 qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he failed to reach the finals. He was at Baylands (Fremont) Raceway on May 16 for the second NHRA Division 6 race. A 6.12/231.36 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and he beat Mert Littlefield in the first round. But in the semifinals, the body mounts broke, and he had to shut off giving Gary Densham a free ride into the final. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.258/232.55 best was good for the second alternate. Jim's next NHRA national event was Indy, and he showed up with a new Iversen bodied Trans Am. |

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. The track was cold and slick. He got out of shape in the second round and shut off to a 10-second time to win over Billy McCahill. He went up against Kenny Bernstein, and his 6.32/210.28 finished runner-up to Kenny's 6.21/238. Jim qualified #10 at Pomona with a 6.229/236.22 for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.18/227.27 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/236 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/237.46. His 6.19/241.28 lost to his son Mike's 6.00/240 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. OCIR held its first of two 64-car shows early in April. Of course, Jim was there. In the first round, he had problems and shut down against Bruce Iversen. In the second round, he got out of shape and shut off again against Tripp Shumake, who was blasting to 5.74 in the other lane. A week later (April 9), OCIR held its second 64-car show. Jim ran a lot better this time. His 6.17/240.00 in the opening round beat Billy Meyer's 6.19/222. In the second round, his 6.05/231.36 beat Henry Harrison. This was one of those races where everyone made two runs, and the two Low ET cars would race in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05 was the third-lowest ET, and he didn't advance to the final. | Jim also ran 5.97 Orange County 10/16/83. | By summer '83, this car was red and ran a 5.90 single at the summer OCIR race that put him out for the night. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Jim had this simple-looking Mustang built in late 1984 to replace the Iversen bodied Camaro. Jim attempted to qualify his Mustang at the NHRA World Finals with a 6.01/242.58, good for the third alternate. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" with a 6.086/250.97 at Pomona for the Winternationals. in the first round, an off pace 6.189/226.47 lost to Rick Johnson's 5.66/259. On April 6, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. His 6.08/245.23 in the opening round beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen. In his second race, he ran another 6.08 at 243.90, but he lost to John Force's blower popping 5.82/247. He was at Bakersfield in May for the "March Meet." Jim's 6.10/245.90 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with Rick Johnson, driving the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, Dunn smoked the tires, and eventual winner Johnson advanced with a 5.76/252. Had tragic wreck at Nitefire Nationals in Boise, ID in '85 where a spectator was killed after the car went through the wire fence and throttle got hung up. We formerly listed 6.05 for Jim this year. Removing that until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two. |

Notes: Dunn was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.79/253.09. At the Bakersfield March Meet (now held in April), Jim qualified #6 in the ear field. In the opening round, his 6.34/171 lost to eventual winner John Martin's 5.74/245. Shortly after that, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals. Notes: Jim had a great year, running 5.40s everywhere. Jim qualified #9 with a 5.419/267.22 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he blew a motor and slowed to a 10.04/75.33, losing to R.C. Sherman's 5.49/271. He was at the NHRA Arizona Nationals two weeks later, qualifying #13 with a 5.49/247.66. He lost to Glenn Mikres in the first round. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was his first time back at the NHRA Gatornationals after seven years. His 5.46/255.24 qualified #6. He smoked the tires in the first round, but his 6.39/235.78 still beat Al Hofmann's troubled 13.43/54. Dunn lost to K.C. Spurlock in round two. Best NHRA times from the World Finals, 5.415/272.14.
