Notes: Don attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winters but was the #32 alternate (out of 50 alternates!) at 6.57/209.30. He made one of his best passes ever in attempting to qualify at the second NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. His 6.29/222.22 easily made the field, but it cost him a motor on the run, and he could not compete. Don Ewald took his place in the show. At the NHRA Finals, he was the 18th alternate (times not reported). |

Notes: Don was the tenth alternate at Pomona (times not reported). He was the fourth alternate at Gainesville (times not reported). Don was the fourth alternate at Baton Rouge with a 6.50 (speed not reported). He was the third alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.300 best (speed not reported). Shortly after, he was at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race. Only six cars showed, and his 6.41 qualified #3. He beat John Holcombe in the first round before fouling against Lee Weller in the semi-final. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. Unfortunately, his off-pace 7.75 in the opening round lost to Charlie Greer's 6.30. Don was the second alternate at Indy with a 6.178/227.84. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Where did Don run 6.02/238? | A very interesting idea, but probably the wrong engine choice. Iron-headed Donovan didn't really provide the best power-to-weight ratio for the project? Notes: Durden and Ford Cox built the dragster in Cox's backyard. They mounted a '55 Chrysler Hemi in a '29 Model A chassis. Other pieces in their backyard dragster were a '47 Ford transmission and a '39 Ford rear end. "We built this competition car piece by piece," said Cox. "The time we spent on it was in our off hours. Dessie is a student at Presbyterian College, and I'm an airplane mechanic over at the Congaree Air Base. So you see, we can't devote much time to the car. I guess you could call it a hobby." On Jan. 4 at Bennettsville Drag Strip, Durden set a new strip record of 115.38 mph. He copped top eliminator honors at Chester on Apr. 5 with 121.62 mph. On Apr. 19 at Chester, he turned 116.88 mph, but developed clutch troubles, which kept him out of elimination competition. On Apr. 26 at Chester, Durden took top eliminator with 121.00 mph. He repeated with a top eliminator victory at Chester on May 10 with 121.62 mph. They added three more carburetors to make a total of six in time for the race at Chester on June 14. Durden took top eliminator with 116.88 mph. He repeated with a top eliminator win at Chester on June 28 with 121.62 mph. At the big 2nd International Drag Races at Chester, Durden turned in his fastest time of the season and set a new strip record in B/D with 123.28 mph during time trials on July 4. He won the B/D class with 118.42 mph. He lost to John Hitch during top gas eliminations. On July 19 at Chester, he set a new B/D strip record with 125.00 mph, but clutch troubles kept him out of elimination competition. On Aug. 9, clutch problems kept him out of eliminations again, but he still garnered the top speed of the meet with 125.00 mph. On Aug. 30 at Chester, Durden got the fastest speed of the meet with 123.28 mph. Cecil Curry beat him for the B/D class trophy. On Sep. 1 at the Walterboro Drag Strip, clutch problems took him out of competition again. On Sep. 6 at Chester, Durden turned 123.28 mph in time trials.
