Notes: A local article cited 8.61/181 times, a 70 percent nitro load, and claimed it was one of only five such cars in Texas. We need to confirm it was supercharged. If injected, move to the A/Fuel category. |

Notes: In 1965, funny cars were gaining popularity across the country. A lot of drag racers and fans alike regarded the funny car and FX cars as "circus" acts and not real race cars. The car that changed a lot of peoples' opinions on funny cars was Mr. Norm's Grand-Spaulding Dodge. When Norm Kraus and Gary Dyer brought the former Roger Lindamood factory-altered wheelbase car to Lions in 1965, the team was unknown outside the Midwest. Dyer then ran 8.63 at Lions, and it went down as one of the great runs in history. The other new funny cars had just broken into the eights. This run and the many victories put Gary Dyer into the headlines. Car sold to Chris Fairly in 1966, repossessed by Norm Kraus and sold to a new owner in Texas. (Photo from Gary Dyer. Info from Gary Dyer and James Ibusuki.) | 1965 acid-dipped A/FX (former Roger Lindamood Color Me Gone) - Gary Dyer | Dyer was an 8.630. - Bret Kepner, 7/23 |

Notes: Blown fuel-128" square-tube chrome moly chassis by R&B Automotive. Fiberglass Ltd. body. The car debuted later in the 1966 season, running most of 1967. - DD | Gary Dyer's new '67 mount was up and running late in '66. Owner Norm Krause of Grand-Spaulding Dodge in Chicago estimated the new Charger cost about $25,000. That was a very high dollar amount in those days. It took eight months to build. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and 8.5:1 pistons. Racer Brown supplied the roller cam. The only modifications to the heads were a polish job by Dyer, although the valves were from Donovan. The blower drive and manifold came from Cragar, and the GMC 6/71 was overdriven 17%. A Hilborn gear-driven pump and fuel injection delivered the 40% nitro to the engine. Dyer had little engine trouble in '66, with most of his troubles coming from transmission breakage. The TorqueFlite was used again for this car, but this time the aluminum planetary shafts were replaced by custom-built steel ones. The power was put to the ground through a Mopar rear that ran either 3.70 or 3.90 gears, depending on the track. The total weight of the car was 1,920 lbs. Grand-Spaulding Dodge painted the Charger a Rally Red enamel with silver leaf. ET Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News) mph Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News) |

Notes: On April 2, Gary faced off against Jay Howell, who was driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair. Dyer won all three races as Howell was having all sorts of problems with the newly installed Supercharger on his engine. Gary made runs of 8.47/170.75, 8.28/174.75, and a solo 8.26/174.75 to win the match. Shortly after that, he was at Capitol Raceway for a best of three match against arch-rival Don Gay. Gay's GTO broke a rear end in their first race, and Gary soloed with an 8.47/173.74. In the second race, the big Hemi in the "Mr. Norm" car broke a rod and slowed to a 9.13 loss to Don's 8.63/163. Dyer was done for the day, and Gay made another solo run to win the match race. On April 30, he was up against Arnie "the Farmer" Beswick for a best of three at Gary, Indiana. He won the match by winning the first two races with times of 8.39/166.67 and 8.23/176.14. On May 20, Dyer faced off against Eddie Schartman at York US 30. The factory-backed Comets were tough to beat, and on this day, Gary didn't. In their first race, Eddie's 8.20/169 beat Dyer's similar 8.20/171.42. The Dodge blew the motor in the second race, and Schartman's 8.28/167 won the match. Also 8.01/185.56 in the third round of 1967 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet and 8.02 Minnesota. |

Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above. |

Notes: Red with black Logghe Stamping Co. chassis. Original body from first built to mid 69. This body burned off at Texas and was replaced by lightweight color gelcoat body known as Band Aid body. Used to win the '69 Coke Circuit. Gary Dyer drove after recovering from burn injuries in 1968 Charger fire at US 30 in Gary, Ind. | Ran 7.46 at York US 30. Ad cited him as a 2/1 favorite to win the next race and cited 7.26/197.35 bests at the time. - DD | After having a terrible season in '68, the "Mr. Norm" team rebounded in '69 with this new Charger 500. Early in the season, Gary Dyer had planned on retiring from driving, and Norm Weekly was put behind the wheel. But the "racing bug" returned and before long, Dyer was once again driving the car. Norm went on to drive Chris Karamesines' new FC. The Charger 500 body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. It was narrowed ten inches and chopped two. The interior tin was done by Lee Austin, and it was his first attempt. It turned out really well. The Logghe Brother's 125" chassis held a stock-stroke 426 Hemi built by Dyer. It used M/T rods and pistons. Crower was the camshaft of choice. The heads were also done by Dyer. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and once again Dyer was involved as he prepared his own GMC 6/71. Up on top sat a Hilborn four port injector. The 1,500 hp was transferred to the 4.56 Dana rear end by a TorqueFlite transmission. Gary was a regular on the, new for '69, Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. |

Notes: US 30 advertisement claimed 6.84/228. Maybe the 6.84, but no way on the 228 (maybe 218). AKA the Band Aid car (for the wrap-around white stripe used to mask some fiberglas repair). Mid 1969 Body replaced original one burned off in Texas. |
