Notes: Set a "1320 Record" for class A Hot (aka Fuel) Roadsters with a 151.77 blast at Bakersfield on May 3. Made cover (again) of 5/09/59 Drag News. We need to find out if Burkhart-Burns ran under the well-known Reath Automotive "banner" other than in 1959.; He set a new but short-lived Drag News 1320 record at Bakersfield on May 3. At Riverside, on May 17, he won what Drag News mistakenly called the A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 10.44 at 144.00 mph. He really ran in what was then called the A Hot Roadster class, meaning he ran on fuel. Photo: "Show us your favorite Model A roadsters," p. 7, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Coleman was a student at Arlington State College when he caught Raymond Austin's eye to drive his black Fiat fuel altered for him. His first outing driving for Austin was at the I-20 drag strip in Tyler on Oct. 8. He won the A/FC class and Middle Eliminator with 9.39 at 167.59 mph. The car graced the cover of Drag News on Dec. 2, having just set a new Drag News 1320 national record in A/FA of 9.13 on Sep. 17 in Tyler, Texas. Notes: Menacing and hunkered down, this chopped, full-fendered coupe ran in the Fuel Coupe class years before the term FUEL altereds came into use. Notes: A-modified roadsters commonly ran against fuel dragsters in Top Eliminator.; After successful outings at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Waters put some slicks on the roadster and did a gear change to run at a few drag races. On Nov. 9 at Riverside, he lost to Lyle Fisher in the Speed Sport roadster in A/MR class, turning 9.91 at 157.89 mph in the losing effort. The following week, the team went to Kingdon to see if they could beat Ernie Hashim's 165.44 mph track record. They made six runs but didn't come close. Still, they got the meet's top time with 9.93 at 149.50 mph. Photo: Drag cars in motion, p. 1878, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |
