Notes: In March, he took Swamp Rat I to Arizona and California, doing well in the former but not performing so well in California. Returning to Florida in April, he stunned the drag racing world with a world record clocking at Brooksville. On June 14, he clocked 8.48 at 182.56 mph at the Southwestern Drag News Invitational at the Freeway Drag Strip in Houston on June 14. A week later, he suffered the fateful engine explosion at Chester, South Carolina, which landed him in the hospital for weeks with second-degree burns to his hands and face. In a hospital interview, he said he would retire from drag racing. "I'm through with drag racing," he said. "I'll never race again."
