Notes: Dode Martin was a member of the original/first Shafters car club in Fallbrook, CA, but newspapers never reported the name of the driver of the roadster; probably driven by several club members. They did most of their racing at Colton, capturing frequent class and Top Eliminator wins. They also kept breaking the B/MR class strip records repeatedly in 1955. Notes: In its first appearance at Morrow Drag Strip, Colton, CA, it narrowly lost to a fuel bike that clocked 121 mph in the Top Eliminator finals on July 30, 1955. Notes: In early 1955 at Perryville, he ran in Class H, but by April, he was classified as a B/A. When the final day of eliminations at NHRA's first national championship races at Great Bend were rained out, Grimes convinced NHRA officials to complete the final eliminations at Perryville on Nov. 19/20, 1955. Notes: Grimes may have driven this car at a few races in 1956, but he had the best times in it with other drivers doing the driving. Jack Moss drove it at an NHRA regional meet in Amarillo on Aug. 19, clocking 116.88 mph. Bert Kessler, from Matton, Illinois, drove it at the ATAA World Series of Drag Racing event at Lawrenceville, Illinois, on Aug. 26, running 117.493 mph. But Everett Goosic recorded the fastest times in the car, with runs all over 120 mph at meets at Perryville in November and December. Photo: Arizona Republic, Aug. 19, 1956 - MB |

Notes: Although Grimes may have driven the car at some events, he did best with other drivers. Lloyd Hough of Phoenix drove the car at Casa Grande Drag Strip on Mar. 10, 1957. Then, on Apr. 14, Lewis Rogers drove the car for the first time at Perryville. He did well enough that Grimes had him drive the car at the 1957 NHRA U.S. National Championships in Oklahoma City. Rogers drove the car to a class win with a clocking of 11.59 at 121.62 mph. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 50, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: In his Fiat altered, Grimes repeatedly upped his NHRA national record in A//A. On Mar. 2 at the Casa Grande Airport, Grimes set a new track record in A/C, a new class, clocking 120.32 mph. It was reported in the Arizona Republic (9/2/58) that Grimes did not compete in 1958, undoubtedly meaning that he had others do the driving for him. Lewis Rogers, who drove the car at the 1957 Nationals, was probably the driver in 1958. In April, the Arizona Republic (4/14/58) reported that Rogers was a partner in the car with Grimes. At the Drag News Open on June 8, 1958, at the Chandler Associated Drag Strip, Grimes reportedly installed a supercharger to be more competitive with Californian Glen Ward. In late 1958, Grimes got involved in an advisory role in a dragster built by Al Eshenbaugh and Buddy Free. Photo: Pomona Progress Bulletin, July 7, 1959 |

Notes: The Arizona Republic (4/24/59) reported that Grimes had a potential buyer for his altered who would take ownership of the car at a race in Henderson, Nevada. That sale didn't happen as the Grimes-Lewis altered kept racing but in a limited fashion. At Pomona on July 5, Rogers set a new NHRA national record for both time and speed. Notes: Although running a limited schedule, the altered was still competitive, winning Middle Eliminator at Phoenix on March 14. The Arizona Republic (4/1/61) reported that the altered was racing at Deer Valley Dragway in Phoenix on April 2, 1961, but that couldn't be confirmed. Notes: This roadster coupe was also called Jitterbug. The newspaper report (Bakersfield California, 12/8/53) of Duncan's track record at Bakersfield of 138.217 mph is questionable. Other newspaper reports (Pomona Progress Bulletin, 11/19/54) indicated that its best speeds were just over 126 mph. On Dec. 13, 1953, Duncan's Doodlebug set a track record in C/CC of 121.45 mph. Duncan's Doodlebug is prominently featured at Santa Ana in a great video ("Old School Hot Rodding") on YouTube uploaded by Duncan's great grandson.
