Notes: Ronnie ran 9.652 at NHRA Pomona CA 2/72. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 at 9.42/149.50 over Nicholson at 9.70/139.31. He also ran 9.411/146.57 at the Tulsa PRA race. Ronnie ran 9.39/145.63 at IHRA Rockingham 5/72 to set the World and IHRA record (per S&M ad). He ran 9.50 at Palm Beach. The best times in the Cuda in NHRA national event competition were 9.527/144.49 at Gainesville. Sox brought the Duster to Columbus in June, but it was too late to get through tech, so he ran the Cuda. So, the Rockingham times were in the Cuda for sure, but what about the Dragway 42 speed? We need to validate that it was run in the Cuda and not the Duster, as the IHRA Summernationals were run on August 20, 1972. Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Nov. 2007): p. 37 - MB |

Notes: At the NHRA Winternationals, though Dean Moon set a new AM/SP record of 11.05/139.16, it was Sam Parriott's "City Of Industry Special" that again snatched the class win (11.69/127.84). This was the last national win for his long-lived Cad-Kurtis, as a bigger, badder 427 Ford in sexy new Kurtis livery was unveiled in September. - RT; Rodder's Journal, no. 32, p. 39 - MB |

Notes: Team aka Harryman, Brown & Frank. Made cover of 5/31/58 Drag News, caption claiming car/driver held gas record (set earlier) of 157.61. Brown died sorting out the Scrima-Adams-Smith dragster at Lions in September 1959. - RT; The car debuted at San Fernando on Feb. 16, setting a track record 147.54 mph. The next week at Lions, it turned 149.75 mph. Lions and San Fernando were offering substantial prize money for the first gas dragster to go over 150. Brown, only 19 years old, was the first to do it, hitting 152.28 mph at San Fernando on Mar. 2. Brown was on a roll as he then broke that mark by going 157.61 mph at San Fernando two weeks later. Notes: Texas ET Record. Hill's dragster was a very light 1075 pounds. He attended the NHRA National Championships at Oklahoma City, but newspapers didn't report his results. But when he returned to Texas, he emerged with successive wins that marked him as a force to be reckoned with. At the Texas State Championships at Caddo Mills on Sep. 6-7, he was runner-up to Jack Moss's twin Chevy-engined dragster in the finals for the A/D class. His best time of the meet was an impressive 9.95 seconds. On Oct. 5 at Freeway Drag Strip in Houston, he took top eliminator with 135 mph. He also got low ET of the meet. He repeated his top eliminator victory at Freeway Drag Strip on Oct. 19. He also set a new track record for A gas dragsters with 9.93 at 139.75 mph. In the first round of top eliminator, he beat Rodney Singer's blown Cad-engined dragster with 9.96 at 138 mph. He beat Linn Huit's Chrysler dragster in the next round with 10.07 at 136.36 mph. With his record-setting run, he beat J. F. Threadgill's Olds-engined A/FD in the top eliminator finals. He took a top eliminator win for the third consecutive time at Freeway Drag Strip on Nov. 9. He also clocked an unofficial 9.82-second run. En route to his TE win, he beat Mackey & Veselka (134.93 mph), Singer & Canton's blown Cad dragster (10.24 at 139.75 mph), and the final against Harold Stiefel's Pontiac dragster (10.19 at 135.95 mph). Afterward, Hill asked permission to make a single run and tied the strip's gas dragster record with 145.39 mph. (Photo: "Early drag racing photos," p.53, Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: The Bug-1941/1950. The first "rail" dragster ran at Muroc Dry Lakes in the early 40s. When the first real dragstrip opened at Santa Ana, owner Dick Kraft was there every week. He kept stripping it down until everyone called it a "rail." A name that has stuck to this day. Info from http://www.justanothertoy.com. Dick passed away on January 17, 2009. RIP to one of the Great Grandfathers of the sport.; L.A. Times (11/5/50) stated that Kraft's best time at Santa Ana was 112 mph. - MB | The car ran a mixture of alcohol and nitro and was 268 cubic inches. A pesticide sprayer that was converted to a 'rail job.' The car went 116.5 later that season after going 109.09 in September 1950. - Brian Lohnes, Facebook Video |
