Notes: Chuck Gireth, a record-holding drag boat pilot, fielded a new top fuel dragster in April 1961. The Chrysler engine was "Tiger powered" by a Harmon-Collins racing cam. Running on April 9 at Fontana, Gireth set a new track record and low et of the meet with 8.70 at 180 mph. As the report in Drag News stated, it marked the new dragster "as one of the nation's best almost before the paint had dried." Not bad for a first outing in the new car. Art Chrisman beat him in the second round of eliminations. At Pomona on April 16, Gireth won both top fuel eliminator and overall top eliminator. His best speed was 179.63 mph. On May 7 at Bakersfield, Gireth took top fuel eliminator with a best time of 8.83 and 174.08. He blew his engine while coming to the line for the overall top eliminator finals. On May 14 at Fremont, Gireth-Carpenter took top eliminator, top time, and low elapsed time honors with 8.47 at 184.04 mph. Gareth said after his win, "We are still learning about it as we go along. It is going to turn an honest 190 mph as soon as we learn all we can about the engine." At Fontana on May 20, Gireth won top fuel dragster eliminator with 8.98 at 176.47 mph. Gireth beat Lefty Mudersbach by two car lengths to win top eliminator honors with 8.37 at 178.57 mph. Gireth continued his win streak at Riverside the following week on May 28. He won the A/FD class with 8.52 at 182.14 mph and beat Leland Kolb to win top eliminator. Gireth-Carpenter were in the headlines every week in Drag News in 1961. It's puzzling why their accomplishments aren't more widely known. On June 3 at Bakersfield, Gireth took a victory in A/FD class, top fuel eliminator, and capped it off with top eliminator. He broke the unlimited class strip record at Famoso with 187.10 mph. He was indeed knocking on the 190 mph door that he had earlier thought was attainable. His time in winning his class was a speedy 8.40. Drag News writers were looking to hang a nickname on him, some calling him "The Tiger" and "The Smiling Tiger." They took some time off to examine the car "from the ground up" before their next race on July 15 at Fontana. They arrived late and made just a single shakedown run, clocking 9.03 at 175.43 mph. They left satisfied that the car was ready to continue its winning ways. He towed the car north to Fremont for a July 30 race. He took Low E.T. honors with 8.62 seconds. He lost to Ted Gotelli in the top eliminator finals. He also was scheduled to race for the Number Two slot on the national Mr. Eliminator list, but Rod Stuckey developed clutch problems, so their match was postponed. Returning to Southern California, they raced at Fontana on August 5. He took a top eliminator win with 8.75 at 175.09 mph. They also took an A/FD win with 8.75 at 180.50 mph. On August 19 at Fontana, he clocked 8.67 and 179.28 for low ET and top time of the meet. Gireth was rescheduled to race the Cash Auto Parts Special at Fremont on September 3 for the Number 2 spot on the Mr. Eliminator list. But according to Drag News, "he's giving up racing." He put his efforts into dragboat racing, where he was very successful. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 85, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: There were 25 members in the Oakland Car Club, organized by Pastor Earl Nevins in 1955. It was a non-denominational Christian club. Its motto was a New Testament Bible verse from First Corinthians 9:24: "Know ye not that they who run in the race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run that ye may attain." They would hold church services on Sunday mornings at whatever drag strip they were competing at. They began the season with a Merc engine but switched to a '49 Olds motor in the summer. They towed the car to Oklahoma City for the U.S. Nationals in late August for the 4-day event. They had the misfortune of crashing the car on Friday, Aug. 30. Bad luck haunted them even before they made the trek as their engine caught on fire three days prior to leaving for the race. When they arrived at the race, the transmission "burned out" on their first run off the trailer. They replaced it and took it out to the strip for a shakedown run. "We decided to take it out on the racing strip and start it up," driver Accosta said. "All of a sudden, it started with me half in and half out. I tried to kill the engine from the inside, but it wouldn't stop. Lopez Montemayer ran to the car to help, and I yelled at him to use the outside cutoff. I couldn't get the car out of gear. Suddenly, the clutch released, and Montemayer was thrown 20 feet. I rode it to the fence going about 80 miles per hour and then had to jump out." Accosta wasn't hurt, but the front was smashed so badly that it couldn't be repaired in time to compete. "It's the will of the Lord," said Accosta disappointedly. Notes: On May 3 at Kingdon, they posted a win in AA/A class with 116.22 mph. They towed to San Luis Obispo for the second annual Pacific Gas and Fuel Championships. "One of the nicest events of Sunday was the arrival of the Heaven Pacers from Alameda," reported Karen White. "These fellows, led by their minister, raced and also presented a short sermon during the noon break. Nice fellows and their A/Altered can haul." On June 7 at Cotati, they won the best appearing car award. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 100, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: He swapped out his flathead engine for a '55 Chev in the rear-engined dragster. On Sep. 25 at Santa Ana, he made his first and second runs on gas, clocking 119 mph on the first pass and 11.50 at 121 mph on the second. He switched to fuel but had nothing but problems, so he called it quits. He was classified in C Roadster at Santa Ana on Oct. 30. At that race, he got top time, top eliminator, and won his class. His best speed was 139.28 mph. Other newspapers reported that he ran in D Roadster, but it was essentially for dragsters as it was the same class that Losinski and Duncan raced in. On Oct. 23 at Santa Ana, he beat the Bean Bandits to take a class victory in D "roadster" with 140.78 mph. On Oct. 30, he repeated his win at Santa Ana with a 139.28 mph run. He notched another win at Santa Ana on Nov. 20, clocking 134.78 mph. He repeated at Santa Ana again on Dec. 11, winning with a speed of 137.50 mph in the meet's fastest race.
