Notes: Nicholson was at Englishtown in April for the Mountain Motor Nationals. He held the track record from two years before at 7.99. It was an eight-car show, and his 8.14/161.87 qualified #4. In the opening round of eliminations, Don Campanello broke, so Don's 8.20/165.13 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.15/163.93 lost to the eventual winner Pat Patterson's 8.03/169. Late in May, he was at Capitol Raceway for a best of three match race against Patterson. Nicholson won two straight with times of 8.13 and 8.16 with a best speed of 169.77. In July, he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 8.09 qualified #2 behind Rickie Smith's 8.04. He then beat Pat Musi and John Brumley to face William Paris in the final. The two had a great race that saw "Dyno" win his sixth career IHRA event with an 8.15/164.23, beating Paris' 8.20/166. A week later (July 25), the car was destroyed at Dragway 42. He was there for a match race against Ronnie Sox. The big Boss powerplant lost a head gasket at about 130 mph, and fluid got under the tires. The car then got sideways, and Don tried to save it, but he clipped Sox's Omni. That sent Sox barrel rolling down the track while Nicholson's 11 week-old Mustang continued into the guardrail and ripped out eight support posts and 200 feet of railing. Don got off light with just a sprained ankle, and Sox was unhurt. Don had only run the car at a half dozen races. He got his act back together quickly, as he was racing his backup car at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals. His 8.17/169.45 (Top Speed) qualified #3. He then beat Sox's 8.33 with an 8.22 and an 8.56/156.79 advanced him into the final when Warren Johnson's Camaro broke. He may have one the final as he ran 8.20/164.83 compared to Smith's 8.32/164, but he had left a red light glowing on the tree. On August 13, he showed up at Maryland International for the Mountain Motor Nationals. Don showed up with a new unlettered Mustang that had just been painted the night before. There was no lettering or decals on the car.

Notes: How would you like to be half a second faster than the nearest competitor in your class? On March 15 at Lions, that's how much faster Tidwell was running. His 7.59 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, far in front of Ted Thurber, who was second at 8.01. In the opening round, Billy's 7.61/196.93 beat Frank Britt's 8.02/192. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal with a 7.49/199.55 that defeated Ed Allen's 8.03/187. A final round 7.58/197.63 got the victory over Bob Williams. Billy was the Jr. Fuel winner at the 1969 March Meet.

Notes: Nikolis was at Darlington in the middle of March for the IHRA Winternationals. 26 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. IHRA was just returning to its mountain motor Pro Stock roots at this time. Still, the first two qualifiers were small500 cubic inch cars. Nick's 7.348/187.50 qualified second behind Steve Schmidt's similar,7.34/188. A 7.42/186.72 advanced when Neil Moyer failed to show in the opening round of eliminations. A second-round 7.41/185.95 defeated James Antonette. In the semifinal, his 7.43/185 fell to eventual winner Tim Nabors who was driving a mountain motored (689) to a 7.38/188. The following week (March 19), he failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals, but that wasn't unusual, at there were more non-qualifiers(34)than qualifiers. He qualified #8 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in early May with a 7.37/185.91. He beat Jerry Haas in the opening round before losing to Larry Morgan in round two. He also went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, in round one, his 7.62/181.11 lost to John Nobile's 7.57/182. He continued to have trouble making the fields at the NHRA national events. He was the ninth alternate at Englishtown for the Summernationals with a 7.46/185.56. Nick was the third alternate at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 7.52/182.29. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 7.42/184.99. His opening round 7.45/184.31 lost to Don Beverley's 7.42/185. At the next event, the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, he was the first alternate with a 7.41/185.49 best. Nick ran the entire incredibly tough NHRA tour, qualifying three times and winning one round. Best times from Ennis and Pomona Winters, respectively. Nick also drove the Paul Rebeschi car on the IHRA tour this year. We need to validate which car ran where.

He improved to 6.54/209.71 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat John Force's 6.46/218 | Jim brought out a new Firebird in June. - Joe Moore

Notes: Usually, Mark Yuill drove this car, but on April 17, Brad showed up behind the wheel at Las Vegas International for the High Roller National Open. It was an eight-car show, and Brad set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.91/170.13. In the opening round of eliminations, Jerry Eckman fouled against him, and his 8.13 advanced. In the semifinal, Yuill ran 8.02/169.81 to beat Harry Scribner's 8.09/170. He faced #2 qualifier Terry Sherrill in the final. Brad got the "jump," and his 8.19/166.97 held on to win over Terry's better 8.16/170. He returned to Las Vegas on May 6 and ran a best of 8.10/166.97.

Notes: Antique Fiberglass of Pomona made the body for this car. It was so thick and heavy that two men needed to raise it while a third put the prop rod in place. It also had a working driver's door that added to the weight. Steve started the '68 season by qualifying #15 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race with an 8.51. That alone was pretty good, considering 33 cars were trying to make the sixteen-car show. Unfortunately, he was shut down on the line in the first round with a water leak. On February 24, he raced at a sixteen-car show at Lions. An 8.01 qualified #3, and in the first round, an 8.14/180.72 advanced over Marv Eldridge. He beat a wheelstanding Cecil Yother in the second round with an 8.04/178.21. An 8.12/178.57 beat Gas Ronda's injected Mustang at 8.72/141 to move into the final against Fred Goeske. Once again, gremlins stepped in, and a blown transmission cost him any shot at victory in the final. He raced at Carlsbad the next day (February 25) for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, but he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.89/182 in the first round, with an 8.32/170.77. Thirty cars showed for another sixteen-car show at Irwindale on March 3. Steve qualified #5 with an 8.17/178.92. He had a close first-round win over the New Breed, running an 8.26 to an 8.29. In the second round, Charlie Allen fouled away an 8.05/161.29, giving Bovan's 8.27/175.09 an easy win. Bovan then got around Liberman in the semis, putting him in the final against Don Nicholson. The track had a curfew, and the final race between the two was never run, so they split the purse. Steve was at OCIR on May 11 for a best of three match against Allen. Bovan lost their first race with an 8.27/173.74 that fell to Charlie's 7.94/158. But Steve was good on the lights, and in the second race, his slower 8.11/177.51 beat the Dart's quicker 8.06/181. He did it again in the third race, where his 8.11/173.41 once again beat Allen's slightly quicker 8.10/181 for the match race victory. Steve had then jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place (see separate entry). | Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT
