Notes: Also ran flathead Merc. We need to confirm the best ET for the Chrysler. Formerly listed a 9.80, which seems way too quick for 1955 and we feel was mistakenly attributed to a 9.88 from Santa Ana in 1956. - BP | Rice ran a hemi and a flathead Mercury during 1955. He ran the first half of the rain-shortened Nationals (Great Bend, Kansas) with the Chrysler, and switched back to the flathead for the wrapup two months later in Phoenix. He beat Fritz Voigt in the final (11/20/55) with a best time of 10.3/141.95. On 8/14/55 at San Fernando, Rice won Top Eliminator with a 10.4/139.75, which was a new strip speed record. (Pictured here beating Clem Johnson on a Vincent.) - RT | 1955 NHRA Nationals originally scheduled for September 29 through October 2 at Great Bend. Finals were rained out there and were completed on November 19/20 at Perryville, Arizona. Rice won over Fritz Voigt. The final Round 10.30 was Low ET. They had two false start races, both caused by Voigt. Top Speed was Lloyd Scott at 151.00 in the Bustle Bomb. - Bob Frey |
