Notes: Car and ET info taken from the May 1971 issue of Drag Racing USA magazine. Ran 6.80 at Irwindale 1/01/71. Confirmed 6.77 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet in 71, which was runner-up to Foster's 6.72, and were the two quickest runs of that event. - ND | Jim had one of his best season's in '71 driving his low budget 'Cuda. It started at Irwindale on January 1 for the New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #1 with a 6.99/180.72. He ran a first-round 6.96 to beat Don Schumacher's tire smoking 8.20. He went on to win over Tom McEwen and set Low ET at 6.80. The next day he was at Fremont for the New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.36/182.92 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.25/187.88. He took another win at the first OCIR All-Pro race. A first-round 7.08/186.33 beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda, and he advanced past the semifinals when Stan Shiroma fouled. In the final, he ran 6.96/203.61 for the victory over Gene Snow's off pace 7.41/152. Lions hosted the first AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Dunn ran 6.75 in qualifying among the "unseeded" cars. In the first round, he beat Tom Prock's tire smoking Vega with a 6.92/171.10. He picked up to a 6.74/191.89 in the second round while beating Richard Tharp's 6.84/215 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Jim got out of shape and shut off, giving Shiroma an easy run into the final. Jim lost in the first round, to Prudhomme at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 24. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, he qualified #10 with a 7.22 at only 183. Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, against Snow. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 13, he had an interesting day. In the opening round, Prudhomme’s 6.82/223 beat him when he shut off to 10.71/82.79. He got back in on the "break rule" when Shiroma broke a rear end. In the semifinals, Jim’s 7.14/194.38 lost to Rich Siroonian's engine blowing 6.87/221. Once again, he was placed, but into the field as Rich was unable to return for the final. Once again, he faced Prudhomme. He ran a sub-par 7.23/147.78 in the final that lost to the "Snake's" sizzling 6.62/226. He grabbed another win at the Bakersfield March Meet on March 8. He beat Fred Goeske, Shiroma, and Bob Pickett, in that order, to face Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" Maverick in the final. Jim took the victory with a 6.99/212.26 over Dave's 7.17/204. OCIR held an eight-car show in March and Jim beat Gary Burgin's Camaro in the first round, with a 7.03/187, but he broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Burgin was reinstated. At OCIR's final All-Pro race on March 27, Dunn ran 7.34/164.23 over Mert Littlefield in round one, a second round 7.28/187.11 advanced when Mike Thermos fouled. In the semifinals, Condit left before the tree was activated so Jim took it easy with an 8.62/143.76 to meet with Snow in the final. But once again, the 'Cuda broke and Gene singled for the win. In April, he was runner-up to Gordon Mineo at Irwindale where he had earlier set Low ET at 7.18. On April 24, Lions held an eight-car show. Dunn qualified #2 with a 6.99. A first-round 7.08/158.45 beat Leroy Hales' 7.42/198 while a semifinal 6.92/194.80 beat Shiroma's 7.00/208. In the final, he ran 6.96 for the win over Bob McFarland's 7.65. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships. He lasted until round two where his 7.25/187.89 lost to Siroonian's 6.75/219. Jim won the NHRA Division 7 race at Irwindale. He qualified #1 with a 7.00/189.57 and on his way to the final, set Top Speed at 214.79. In the final, he beat Dave Beebe in the "Mr. Ed" Charger. He was back at Irwindale on May 31 for the Memorial Day Championships. Unfortunately, he fouled against low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. Jim shut off to 7.54. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim qualified #11 in the tough show, but he lost to Snow in the opening round. Dunn took a win the easy way on June 27 at Fremont for the NHRA's second Division 7 race. He qualified #1 with a 6.96 and in the first round, he ran a solo 7.20 to advance. In the semifinals, Tim Grose broke against him, and he soloed again. This put Jim into the final against Tom Ferraro, driving John Hoven's Mustang. Tom broke just off the line and Jim soloed again for the win with a 6.94/196.50 (Low ET). The following week (July 3), he was at OCIR for the Nitro Championships. Things didn't go so well as he lost to Norm Wilcox driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round. He made up for his early loss by going to Irwindale the following day and winning the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field and Jim started his march to victory by beating Nathan Valdez in the first round, with a 7.22/178.21. A semifinal 7.04/186.72 beat Beebe and in the final, his 7.08/197.36 scored the win over Matsubara's 7.23/205. Later that month, he was at Lions for a sixteen-car show. He lost in the semifinals, when his 6.91 fell to eventual winner Shiroma, who beat him with a 6.79.

Notes: Richard drove four cars in 1997. We think he started the season in the Geronimo car and ran his best times. We need confirmation. Richard qualified #11 at Pomona at 5.086/246.17. He beat Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.123/256.70 to 14.49/67, and Gary Bolger in round two, 6.353/193.46 to 8.08/114. Al Hofmann defeated him in the semis, 4.90/311 to 6.361/138.76. He qualified #5 at Phoenix at 5.044/291.26 but lost to Chuck Etchells in round one, 5.10/286 to 7.190/125.36. At Houston, Richard ran 5.152/283.10 for the #12 slot but lost to Etchells in the first round, 5.12/305 to 5.486/283.73. Richard ran 5.355/284.09 to claim the #16 position at Englishtown but was a no show against Etchells in round one. At Topeka, Richard was driving the Ray Higley machine. We need to confirm if any of these listed events were in one of the other three cars Richard drove this year.

Notes: Although Tom Hoover started the 1971 season in his 1970 Challenger, he had this Charger built for the new season. Just like his last car, the new one used an RCE chassis. This one had a 120" wheelbase It was built in less than two months. It used a Halibrand Quick-change rear with 5.12 gears as well as a Lenco two-speed transmission. Keith Black supplied the stroked late model Hemi. A 33% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold. M/T rods and Forged True pistons were used along with a Crower cam. The body was by Ed Wills. Hoover won AHRA St. Louis 71 in this machine. He also ran the car at NHRA Indy and Ontario. Tom was the sixth alternate at Indy with a 7.050/210.28. He qualified #12 at Ontario with a 7.027/206.42. In round one, he lost to Don Schumacher, 6.90/212 to 7.22/200.89.

Notes: Chapman Automotive built the 120" frame for the car. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used an early 354 Hemi that kept its stock displacement. A factory crank was used along with M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Isky supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on the 18% overdriven blower that rested on a Cragar intake manifold. The car was run on 70% nitro. An estimated 1,200 hp was on tap. John Hogan helped maintain the engine. A Torqueflite transmission was used that fed the power back to a Ford rear axle carrying 3.90 gears. The car weighed 2,120 lbs. The cost of the project was $15,000. O'Donnell was at Gary, Indiana, for a UDRA Circuit race in August. Going into the race, he held both ends of the track record at 8.07/181. By the end of this race, he would not hold either. His 8.10/180.00 beat Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler," who blew a transmission in the first round. In the semi-final, he ran 8.11, but he lost to Doug Cook's 8.01 in the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Mustang. Ron drove the car to 7.85/193 at Union Grove. The speed was a track record. | Gary ran 8.30/185.94, 8.36/180.72, and 8.48/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Also ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DL

Notes: Won every NHRA national event in '71 except the Summernationals. Ran 9.53 at Gators, 9.54 and 9.55 at Ontario, 9.56/143.54 at Indy, 9.56/141.06 at Bristol Springs, and 9.82/141.78 at Bristol All Americans. AHRA record holder at 9.77 in January 1971. | The tough just got tougher in '71. If the "Sox and Martin" team seemed unstoppable in '70, the '71 season was even worse for their competition. At the NHRA Winternationals, their 9.81/141.50 took the top qualifying position for the 32-car field. In qualifying, the closest car to them was Herb McCandless (in a Sox and Martin car), way back in the #2 spot at 9.94. Only four cars in total ran in the "nines" during qualifying. Sox stayed in the 9.80s through eliminations, running a 9.89 in round three to take out Chevy favorite Bill Jenkins at 10.03. In the semifinals, his 9.85 beat John Petrie. He faced a strong-running Wally Booth in the final. Booth had only qualified #15, but he was getting stronger and stronger during eliminations. He ran 9.92 and 9.85 in the last two rounds leading up to the final. But in the final, the Camaro slowed to a 10.02 in a loss to Sox's 9.86/141.28. It was then off to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where Sox ran 9.78/141.73 in qualifying. The only car that ran quicker during qualifying was Don Carlton, who drove Billy Stepp's Dodge to a 9.75/141. But Carlton fouled in the first round, and Sox ran 9.77/141.28 to beat Bobby Yowell. Ronnie set Low ET in round two with a 9.73/141.73 to beat Don Grotheer. He went up against Bob Lambeck, who was still driving his old Dart in the semifinals. Lambeck's best run had only been a 10.02, so Sox had him by almost three-tenths. But even the best make mistakes, and Sox pulled a boo-boo, fouling away a 9.75/141.50 while Lambeck motored into the final with another 10.02. In mid-March, the team was at Aquasco for a best-of-three match against Al Joniec. Al's Maverick was not up to speed, running a 10.26 best, while Sox won all three races with times of 9.54/142.63, 9.61/142.85, and 9.54/142.18. The following week (March 21), they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Sox qualified #1 with Low ET and a track record 9.57 at 143.76. An opening round 9.68/142.40 beat Melvin Yow, and in round two, Arlen Vanke's 9.79 fell to Sox's 9.63/141.95. Booth's strong 9.84/140 Camaro effort lost to a 9.61/142.18 in the semifinals, and Sox was into the final where he would face Carlton, who was now driving the "Motown Missile." Carlton was running well. He qualified #2 with a 9.60/142 and had run another 9.60 in his semifinal race. But Carlton must have been a little worried in his final round race with Sox as he missed a shift (something he rarely did) and slowed to a 10.31 loss to Ronnie's 9.60/141.95. On April 4, Phenix City hosted the NHRA Division 2 opener, and Sox reset the NHRA record to 9.72. He also won the race with a final round 9.84 over Grotheer's 9.96. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sox's 9.63/142 qualified #1, almost two-tenths ahead of second qualifier Yow at 9.82. He then beat Joe Satmary and Roy Hill before running 9.62/143.31 in the semifinals to beat Reid Whisnant. He faced Yow in the final, and there was no stopping the "Sox and Martin" team on this day as Sox's track record 9.57 at 143.76 beat Yow, who slowed to 12.99 when he saw he had no chance of catching the 'Cuda. Near the end of April, Union Grove held its Pro Stock Championships. Sox also won that race with a final round 9.59/141 over Vanke's 9.72/141. Sox then won the Division 3 race at Indianapolis with a final round 9.69. Milan hosted four Pro Stock cars, and the "Sox and Martin" team was one of them. In the first race, Sox's 9.62/142 beat Jenkins' 9.85/139. In his second race, the 'Cuda's 9.69/137 beat Booth's 9.87/133. And Sox made it three wins with a final 9.60/142 over Stuart McDade's troubled 10.90 in Stepp's Challenger. On May 22, Sox went to Muncie for a best-of-three match with Chevy "kingpin" "Grumpy" Jenkins. The Chevy pro was not in the same ballpark on this day as his 9.96 best paled compared to Sox, who won all three races with runs of 9.80 twice, and a final round 9.75/143.62. The next day he was at Greensboro to take on Ford's best, "Dyno Don" Nicholson. Once again, Sox took the match three straight. Late in May, these two would have a rematch, and it turned out the same. Nicholson spun a main bearing in his SOHC Maverick after losing the first race with a 10.08/134 to Sox's 9.80/139.31. Sox then ran a local competitor who filled in for "Dyno" and ran 9.77 to win the match. He came back out to make a third pass but blew the clutch and slowed to 13.33. The month of June started with Sox picking up another win. He ran 9.72/142.18 to beat Carlton in the final of the Division 2 race at Blaney.
