Notes: Photo from Popular Hot Rodding Championships, Martin, MI, 1982. | This team picked up the pace in 1982. John drove Larry Coogle's "Sting" at both NHRA and IHRA events during the year and did quite well. The team missed the season opening NHRA Winternationals, but in March they showed up at Gainesville and qualified #3 with a 6.01/234.37. John beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.17/229.00. In the second round, he fell off to a 6.95/181.45 that lost to Tim Grose's 6.31/234. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he made it into the final before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.26/238 with an off pace 7.92/134. Atlanta held an eight-car show in early April and Pott was there. Unfortunately, he lost to Kosty Ivanof in the first round. John was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show and his 6.27/231.36 failed to make the field (fifth alternate). On May 2, at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, John made it into the final at the second IHRA race in a row. The "Sting" set Top Speed at 245.90 and beat low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the first round, when the "Blue Max" driver got out of shape. In the semifinals, he got around a tire shaking Billy Meyer, putting him in the final against Kenny Bernstein. Pott got his second runner-up finish when Bernstein beat him with a 6.21. He was pretty disappointed when he failed to qualify at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge at the end of May and it was a tough field to crack as there were only eight spots available. John qualified #5 with a 6.14 which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. It wasn't much of a race as John lost a rod shortly after leaving the line, and fell to Don's 6.10/242. At Columbus, the team's best of 6.34/226.13 was good for the fourth alternate spot at the NHRA Springnationals. Things went better the following week (June 20) at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 5.98 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Beadle who set a 5.88 track record in beating him in the first round. During the early part of the season, the team was still running the Firebird body. Not sure when they changed over to the Omni body, but at Maple Grove on June 27 they were running the Omni at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Once again, John made it into the final and once again he was denied the win. This time Pulde got him with a 6.33 as John got crossed up and shut off to 10.65. In July, Pott was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Beadle’s 6.02/246 stopped his 6.22/220.58 from advancing.

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. Don was trying to get his fifth straight NHRA Funny Car Championship in '79. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #4 with a 6.13. But in the first round, he fell off to 6.32 at 201 and lost to Billy Meyer's 6.18/241. At Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener, he qualified #1 but lost early to Pat Foster. The season was not starting so well for the "Snake." Things went better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March. A track record 6.15 at 243.90 qualified #1, and he beat Bob Pickett in the opening round. In round two, his 6.31/236 beat Meyer's 6.37/236. Unfortunately, he went up in smoke in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. Surprisingly, Don did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the Springnationals. He qualified poorly (#13) with a 6.29/236.22, but he picked up to 6.21/228.42 in the first round, to beat Meyer's 6.68/170. In round two, Prudhomme's 6.31/222.22 lost to Al Segrini's 6.20/226. He did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.09/240.64. But in round one, he was late off the line, and his 6.26 lost to Ron Colson's 6.28 in the "Hawaiian." He made a trip to Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division 3 race. Don qualified #2 with a 6.08, just behind Gary Burgin's 6.07. These two would meet in the final. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed during eliminations with a 6.02/240.00. In the final, a 6.16/236.84 gave him the victory over Burgin's 6.30/215. He showed up at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in early July. He had the only Funny Car there, and he singled for the win. He also stopped off at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Don qualified #1 at 6.26 and then ran 6.24/231.95 and 6.23/234.37 to reach the final. His final-round opponent was Dale Pulde driving the "War Eagle," who had run Low ET at 6.12 during eliminations. Don smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.85/178.21 runner-up finish to Pulde's 6.28/236. He then went to US 131 and won their Funny Car Nationals. Prudhomme had run as well as 6.10/237.46 before stopping Frank Oglesby in the final. Another win came at the PHR Championships. In the final, his 6.24/228 beat Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." The wins kept stacking up as he then won the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.21/234.98 qualified #3. The first-round saw him pick up to 6.12 over Roy Harris' 6.35. A semifinal 6.19 took out Burgin's 6.40. The final was against Pulde, and this time the "Snake" reversed the outcome of the PHR meet by winning with a 6.63 over Pulde's 6.69 in a tire-smoking battle. He didn't run so well at Byron, where he lost to Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car in the first round. But he really showed them up in Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Don reset the NHRA ET record to 5.95 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 245.23. A first-round 6.18/215 beat Pulde, but the car went into a wheelstand in round two, and Prudhomme had to shut off against Colson. Shortly after that, he was at Jackson County Sports Park for the NHRA Division 6 Final. He made it into the final only to lose to Raymond Beadle's 6.16/237 in the "Blue Max" with a 6.36/195.50. Going into Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Beadle held a 324 point lead over Prudhomme for the championship. Don had to act fast. He qualified #2 at Seattle with a 6.08/243.24. A first-round 6.13/226.70 advanced over a tire-smoking Kosty Ivanof. Meyer also smoked the tires against him in round two, and Don's 6.32/215.82 moved into the semifinals. There he was upset by Jim Dunn. Jim had been running really well, and in the semis, his 6.17/223 beat Prudhomme who dropped a couple of cylinders at 6.26/223.88. Don had to watch as Beadle went on to win the race. He got some payback at the Winston Challenge race held at Fremont on September.30. Both he and Beadle made up the Funny Car final. It was close as the "Snake" had run 5.99/242.58 in his semifinal race while the "Max" had run 5.98. It was close, but Don's starting line advantage got him the win with his 6.07/236.22 narrowly beating Beadle's 6.06 at the same speed. That was the last highlight of the year as at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Don was off-pace. He only qualified #11 with a 6.43/227.84, and in the first round, his 6.85/229.59 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.53/229. Still, most was happy with a season like this, and he maintained his hold on the second spot in the NHRA points. | At NHRA Seattle, Snake and his Arrow appeared at the JC Penny Firestone behind the mall. - Joe Moore

Notes: Don had a terrible start for the '83 season at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. Eight cars competed, all running two rounds, and the two cars with the lowest ET's would meet in the final. In the "Snake's" first race, he blew his engine, and the car caught fire. Still, his 9.12 beat Gary Burgin, who shut down early. The team installed another "bullet" for his second race, and once again, it blew up and caught fire. He still won as opponent Tom McEwen had shut down. Don crossed the stripe at 7.34/125.69. Things went better at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 6.80 (Low ET) qualified #1. Traction there was terrible as his 6.80 in qualifying held for Low ET of the meet. He went on to win by beating Tom Hoover in the first round with a 7.32/229 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, he beat Tom McEwen. That put him into the final against Gary Burgin. Gary had problems and shut off while Prudhomme took the win with a 7.00. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.097/227.84. A first-round 6.33/207.37 took out Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang, but in the second round, the "Snake" had to shut off against Frank Hawley due to severe tire shake. Don qualified #6 with a 5.92/233.16 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but an off-pace 6.19/209.78 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.04/239 in the first round. Early in April, he went back to OCIR for its first 64 car show. Once again, the race featured two rounds and the two Low ET cars meeting for the final. In the first race, his 6.13/222.77 defeated Burgin's 6.35/230. He raced McEwen in his second race, and the "Mongoose" smoked the tires while Prudhomme took the win with a 6.28/207.37. His best time of 6.13 was nowhere close to advancing into the final. The following week (April 9), OCIR did it again. They held another 64 car show run in the same format. It was not a good day for Don as in the first round, his motor-blowing 6.60/183 lost to John Force's 6.20/225. In his next race, the "Snake" shut off against Billy Meyer. He did not go to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.29 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He stayed tough during eliminations, running 6.36/235.60 over John Collins's 6.63/198 and 6.26/236.84 over Jim White's 6.77/225, but McEwen ran better laps of 6.22 and 6.22 to reach the final. In the final, the "Mongoose's" 6.20/238 got the better of the "Snake's" 6.51/194. Near the end of the month, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.97/243.24 qualified #3. A troubled 6.94/197.36 beat an even more troubled Ken Veney at 7.11/227 in the first round. The car smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Don shut down, losing to Mark Oswald's 6.02/249 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Shortly after that (June 5), he made an appearance at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He "only" qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but once eliminations started, the car came to life. An opening round 5.87/226.69 took out Meyer, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.81/246.57 that defeated Dale Pulde's 5.89/247. He faced Oswald in the final, and despite running a better 5.86/245, he lost to Mark's 6.00/236. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," led qualifying with a 5.88/238, but Prudhomme was right behind in the #2 spot with a 5.94/243.30. Unfortunately, Don lost to Rick Johnson driving the "Custom Body" car in the opening round. He continued to run well at the AHRA events. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.05/244.57. He stayed in the 6.0s by beating Ron Correnti in the opening round with a 6.09/238.10 and Mike Dunn in the semifinal with a 6.08/238.10. Once again, he faced McEwen in the final. This time it was no contest as Don's 6.13/243.91 won easily over McEwen's 6.68/155. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.916/252.80 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Anderson and Hawley to reach the final against Oswald. Mark was great on the lights, and in the final, it showed as his 6.34/245 nipped Don's 6.31/241.93 for the victory. The "Candies and Hughes" team continued to be a thorn in Prudhomme's side at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Mark's 5.90/251 got the pole with the "Snake's" 5.91/238.72 following. These two looked like they were headed for another final-round showdown. In round one, John Lombardo fell to Prudhomme's 5.96/233.16. The "Blue Max" ruptured an oil pan in the second round, so Don made a solo. The semifinal saw Oswald also make a solo as his competition broke. So, all Don had to do was beat Force. But fate stepped in as the car went into heavy tire shake, and Don shut down while Force legged it to a 6.01/247 for the win. Prudhomme bypassed the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver, choosing to go to Kansas City instead for the AHRA Summernationals. His 6.14/234.37 there qualified second behind Mike Dunn's 6.09/246 in the "Hawaiian." In round one, an easy 6.40/229 beat Johnny West, who lost a blower belt. He really picked it up in the semifinal, where his 6.05/218.97 won over West, who broke on the line. In another classic "Snake vs. Mongoose" final, Don's 6.07/239 got the victory over Tom's close 6.10/222. He always ran well at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships as he seemed to win it every other year. But this year, his 6.07/219.51 only qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one when Bob Pickett broke, and in round two, Al Segrini was shut off on the line with an oil leak, so he advanced with a 6.10/233.76 solo. In the semifinal, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires, shutting off to 10.57 in a loss to eventual winner Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," who won with a 6.05/238. Don's best NHRA national event times were the 5.749 from the OCIR Finals and the 252.80 from Sanair. Don sold the car to Dennis Lockaby to Monty Todd. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.193 National Record at 3/89 Houston Supernationals and 5.172 National Record at Indy 89. | Don's last season driving an FC. He started the year by qualifying #12 with a 5.47/261.39 at the Winternationals at Pomona. In the first round, a 5.50/263.92 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.32/259. At Houston for the Supernationals, he ran a 5.19 (Low ET) at 265.80 to qualify first. He lasted until round two when he smoked the tires and lost to Larson again. He qualified badly at the Gatornationals where a 5.52/261.09 was #15 on the list. He lost to Art Hendy in the first round. At the fourth NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Don qualified #7 with a 5.50. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, and a 5.53/252.31 beat R.C. Sherman in round two. But another 5.53/250.62 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.48/263 in the semifinals. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals and another semifinal finish. He qualified #6 with a 5.38/266.74 and beat Sherman in round one, and in round two, a 5.37/268 beat Art Hendey. In the semifinal, he should have won as his 5.39 was better than his opponent Mark Oswald's 5.41. But Oswald got him on the tree. He qualified #1 at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.38/264.55 and ran a first-round solo when Sherman broke. He got one back from Larson in round two when his 5.44/261 beat Larson's 5.50. In the semifinals, both he and Dunn smoked the tires, but Mike got the win. He qualified #1 again at National Trail with a 5.27/272.72 for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires to a loss against Tom Hoover. The next event was the Grandnationals in Canada. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.57/257.51. In round one, a 5.72/256.99 beat Gary Densham's 5.79/242. He got another one over Larson in round two when Bruce broke. In the semifinals, a strong running Kenny Bernstein beat him with a 5.48/254 to Don's 5.73/231. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. Prudhomme set a track record 5.27 in qualifying #1. He was running well, making it into the semifinals against Bernstein before breaking just off the line in their semifinal race. At Denver, for the Mile High Nationals, Don helped save Don Gay Jr. in qualifying. Gay had hit the wall during a qualifying run and was knocked unconscious. The car continued down the track with the now bent in headers lighting the body on fire. It finally rolled to a stop, but one of the pressurized fire bottles exploded, blowing the body into pieces. Gay was still unconscious. Prudhomme had been in the other lane on the run and he came to Gay's aid since he still had his fire suit on. He pulled Gay out of the car. In the actual race, the "Snake" qualified #12 with a 5.89/249.16, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Things went better at the next event, the California Nationals, where Don took his first win of the year. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.30/276.49. In the first round, another 5.30/268.65 beat Kalitta. In round two a 5.38/268.73 beat Jim White and in the semifinals he beat John Force with a 5.35/268.09. He stayed consistent in the final with a 5.32/272.64 taking the title over Oswald's 5.36/274. Seattle International was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.33/271.98, but set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.29/271 over Tom Hoover. A second round 5.38/268.33 beat Force, but a semifinal 5.40/263.77 lost to Bernstein's 5.34/276.

Notes: Dale Pulde started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.109/245.23. But he lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.43/224 in the first round with a 6.86/241.93 when both had traction problems. Shortly after that, he took a break and got married. In March, Dale was back behind the wheel at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.00/247.93 qualified #12, and in the opening round, his 6.05/238.72 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney. A second-round 6.02/241.28 beat John Lombardo's 6.05/239. He got lucky in the semifinals, where he smoked the tires and shut down to a 7.95, but opponent Tom Anderson was disqualified for crossing the centerline. He faced Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the final. Frank had been running low 5.9s throughout eliminations, and although Pulde picked it up to 5.98/243.36 in the final, he still finished runner-up to Hawley's 5.92/242. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals the following week. A 6.39/228.42 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in a tire-smoker with Bernstein in the semifinals. Things didn't go so well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Pulde couldn't get near the 6.00 "bump" as the best run he had in qualifying was a 6.47/175.09. So after not qualifying there, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, where he qualified #1 with a 5.98 (Low ET) at a track speed record of 247.25. He then went on to win, stopping Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 6.11/240 to Beadle's 6.20. Dale ran the Fuel Wars program at Fremont in April. He made passes of 6.62/172, 6.74/210, and 6.84, winning 1 out of 3 matches. He qualified to the "bump" for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.08/245.23 but his opening round 6.14/238.72 lost to Bernstein's 6.02/242. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.01 qualified last in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.31/194.38 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car, but in the semifinal, his 5.89/247 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.81/246. The following week(June 12), he was at Columbus. He qualified #6 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.00/245.23, and in round one, his 6.07/243.24 beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.06/234. In round two, his 6.40/229.59 lost to Johnson's 6.19/234. He was at Maple Grove near the end of the month for the Super Stock Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinal of the eight-car show before losing to eventual winner Hawley. He did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He did race at the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he became the sixth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 252.80 run on July 10, 1983, at Milan, Michigan. He failed to reach the final there. The following week (July 17), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.08/243.24 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.16 fell to Al Segrini's 5.96. The NHRA Mile High Nationals was just an eight-car show, and Pulde ran 6.15/231.95 to qualify #7. In round one, he slowed to 6.29/229.00 in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08/237. Dale also ran 249.30 in 1983. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983.

He improved mightily in round one, to a 6.023/222.22 but lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.87/257. He was the fourth alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.148/230.76. Eric was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. He qualified #10 with a 5.982/248.75. In the first round, his off-pace 6.083/239.23 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.79/254. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but his 5.965/240.32 best was good for the third alternate. He skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. On August 1, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge race. All eight cars ran two rounds, with the two lowest ETs advancing into the final. Eric had some good help here as Dale Emery gave him a hand. In his first race against Mike Dunn, Reed got out of shape and shut off to 7.49/130.31. Things didn't go so well in his second race either, as the car broke on the line. Emery continued to help him at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. A 5.818/250.97 qualified #13, and he lost to John Force in the opening round, 5.65/259 to 7.81/117. Eric put in a good showing at Indy, where he qualified #11 at 5.748/239.87. He got revenge on Billy Meyer in round one, with a huge holeshot and extended the lead in performance as well, earning a 5.767/244.10 to 5.823/200.04 victory. He lost to Johnny West in round two with a 10-second shut-off. Eric qualified #13 at Maple Grove at 5.824/196.97. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 5.58/254 to 5.805/212.76. Eric got his best numbers of the near at the Ennis Chief Auto Parts race. He qualified #13 at 5.550/261.32. He stood toe to toe with Mark Oswald in round one, but lost with his best speed of the year, 5.42/260 to 5.556/267.69. Eric qualified in his traditional #13 slot at Phoenix Fall with a 5.780/257.73. He did not race in round one, and first alternate Johnny West took his spot against John Force. Eric qualified #16 at the Pomona World Finals at 5.670/249.79, but he fouled against Raymond Beadle in round one. AKA Eric Reed-Dowd. Photo from Columbus 1987.

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. Confirmed 6.57/226.70 at IHRA Bristol in June 1975. Kenny was at Byron in mid-June for the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. In his first race, he lost when he crossed the centerline against Larry Fullerton, but in his second race, he beat Shirl Greer with a 6.73/212.26. The following weekend (June 22), found the "Mr. Norm" car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Safford qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. The two had a good race, but Beadle's 6.43 got the win light over Kenny's 6.57.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Hometown confirmed 1975. 787 or 781? Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975.

Notes: Sherman qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.417/272.72. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.49/271.82 beat a motor-blowing Jim Dunn. But in round two, his 5.61/270.02 lost to eventual winner K.C. Spurlock's 5.37/263. He went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. He had trouble during qualifying when a slick blew out and tore off the rear part of the Firebird body. We needless to say, he failed to qualify. The team didn't take long to repair as Sherman was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. His 5.409/268.33 qualified #6, and in round one, his 5.45/261.32 beat Johnny West's 5.47/258. Despite running a strong 5.411/271.32 in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.32/270. That was R.C.'s last NHRA event of the year. Photo from Indy 1989.
