Notes: Jim started his '68 season at Irwindale's New Year's day race by qualifying third with an 8.08 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.18/180 beat Lew Arrington's 8.40/175, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 with a 7.88/180.72 on January 14 at OCIR for an eight-car show and his first-round 7.85/183.28 beat the New Breed. A semifinal 8.02/181.08 beat Gas Ronda's 8.33. In the final, Jim's 7.86/183.28 beat Clare Sanders' 7.71/187.91 in the Limefire. He then went to Lions for the AHRA Winter meet where he qualified way down in twelfth place with an 8.52/141.50 in the 32 car field. He had an easy first-round race, but then ran his best time ever at 7.75/184.80 in round two over Marv Eldridge's 8.08/174. In the third round, he advanced with an 8.18 and in the semifinal, an 8.05 beat Gene Snow's 8.91. He was to face Don Nicholson in the final and Jim was good enough to give Don extra time to fix his transmission he blew in the semis. But the starter signaled for the backup car of Snow to fire just as Nicholson came out of the pits. There was a lot of yelling by racers, officials, and fans, but Liberman beat Snow for the win with a 7.84. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show and an 8.39 qualified Jim eleventh. Arrington ran a first-round 7.95/183 to drop his 8.39/177.86 in the first round. The following day on February 25, he set Low ET at 7.83 in the final while beating Roger Lindamood who fouled in the final at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.89/182.92 beat Steve Bovan (8.32), a second round 7.84/183.28 beat Ray Alley (8.35), and a semifinal 7.86/180.72 beat Arrington (8.20). Thirty funny cars showed to qualify on March 3 for a sixteen-car field at Irwindale and Jim qualified third with an 8.12/178.21. A first-round 7.99/174.41 advanced when Eldridge's Corvette lost fire on the line. A second round 8.18/171.10 beat Fred Goeske's ailing 8.73 and in the semis, he lost to Steve Bovan. In May at Pittsburgh for their Funny Car Championships, he made it into the finals only to lose to a Terry Hedrick holeshot. Jim's better 7.88 lost to Terry's 7.92. Another runner-up finish came on May 18 at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown. He ran well, posting a 7.79/182.18 first-round win over Bill Lawton's 7.96/180, and a second round 7.92/182.18 over Arnie Beswick's 8.17/174. But in the final a 7.85/182.92 was no match for Tom Grove's 7.65/192.70. Another win came on May 30 at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. His final round 7.88/183.28 beat the Kingfish. Aquasco held their third annual Funny Car Invitational in June and a first-round 7.98/181.80 beat a fouling Beswick, but the rest of the meet was rained out. On June 19, Liberman and Grove had a match race at Cecil County. In the first race, Tom's track record 7.52/197.36 beat Jim who fouled away a 7.85/181.08. In the second race, Tom got Jim two straight with a 7.81/193 over JJ. He did better against Nicholson who debuted his new Cougar at a match race at Capitol. Jim won the first race with a 7.66/187.88 when Don blew his trans and rain washed out the other two races so Liberman won the match. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 27, he broke on the line in the first round, advancing Tony Wahlay. He was at Detroit Dragway on August 6 where he drove off the track to avoid hitting some people that were on the track. He was OK, but the car was damaged. Jim ran 185.92 on September 22 for a Maple Grove track record in a match race against Eddie Schartman. JJ's 7.72/184.80 won the first race over Ed's 7.95/177, but another 7.72/185.92 was foiled by the evil red light. Ed won the last race and the match. Another match race was run against Larry Reyes on October 4 at Norwood, Mass. Reyes beat JJ two straight before Jim won the final with a track record 4.94 at 152.54. He then took on Bruce Larson for a best of three match at Cecil on October 6. Jim lost the first race when Larson got a good jump and his 7.64/188 held on to win over JJ's quicker 7.59/187.50. But Jim came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.78/187.50 and 7.81/183.66. At the Lions Funny Car Championships on November 16, Jim set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.65/187.50 and went on to win over Jack Chrisman in the final. He won both his first and semifinal rounds with 7.65's. At the OCIR Manufacturer's meet, he ran a 7.89/181.44 best, but failed to run fast enough to make the final. He qualified second with an 8.20/185 (Top Speed) at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine meet, but lost to Kip Brundage in the first round. Jim won the final race of the year he competed in, the first OCIR All-Pro event of '69, which was run on 12/29/68. He qualified third with a 7.80/182.30 and advanced past the first-round when Charlie Allen broke. He had another easy run in the semis when Randy Walls fouled against him. In the final he ran his all-time bests of 7.53/193.12 to beat Don Schumacher's 7.57/196.50. — Ron Howard |

Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off as near the end of the season; he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. This was done by a hydraulic cylinder. This could be done right from the driver’s seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on traction at the strip at which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was at Connecticut for a best of three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs to his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round, and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided on who won the most rounds. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed-up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round, and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy. Notes: Maybeck's '70 Camaro was built by Rollie Lindblad. It was light, weighing just 1,970 lbs. It used a Detroit Locker rear end with 4.10 gears. He continued to run the Chevy engine with displacements between 454 to 500 cubic inch The first time out with the new car, he ran 7.32/195. That was also the best time he had ever run in his final car. The article in the May '71 Rodder & Super Stock magazine claimed that he made several runs in the 200 to 205 mph area. | Also ran 7.41 at NY National. | Best known NHRA speed was 178.00. |

Notes: Direct Drive backed Tirend Activity Booster. For the 1969 season, Tom bought the Candies and Hughes '68 Barracuda (yes, a Logghe car - C&H would go to Don Hardy for '69), installed a Tim Beebe 392 with direct drive, and qualified no. 1 at the Winternationals. At '69 Springnationals, he was runner up to Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mach 1. He only ran this car one year. The next year would see the Hot Wheels saga begin. | At the AHRA Winternationals, Tom failed to qualify, running a best of 7.97/193. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.79/193.96 (Low ET) but lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.60 in the first round, with an 8.96. At Bakersfield, Tom ran a first-round 7.78/196.93 (Top Speed) over Ray Alley (8.18/187.50), but a second 7.78/196.73 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.70/195.65 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22. On May 4 at Aquasco, he lost to Tommy Grove's 7.91/191.08 in the first round, with an 8.23/164.53. On May 11, he lost a match race against Charlie Allen at Suffolk. At the AHRA Springnationals, a 7.82 qualified him fifth, and he made it to the semifinal before Leonard Hughes ran a 7.52/202.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Tom's 7.70/188. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified third with a 7.78/184.04 and ran 7.63/185.56 over Gas Ronda, a 7.67 over Sid Foster's quicker 7.60, and a semifinal 7.57 over Fritz Callier. A broken rear end ended his chances against Ongais in the final. On June 22 at Aquasco, he lost to Lew Arrington's 8.07/187.88 in the first round, when he smoked the tires to an 8.71/152.28 loss. On July 9 at Atco's fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Frank Oglesby's 7.76/194.80 beat him in the first round. At Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 16, a first-round 8.07/181.44 failed to beat Jim Liberman's 7.50/177.86 (Low ET). On August 2, Tom singled in the first round, over Ron Rivero at the PHR Championships, who shut off in the K&G Mustang. But in the second round, he broke, giving Dick Loehr a solo into the semis. At the US Nationals, Tom qualified in both Top Fuel and Funny Car with his 'Cuda qualified tenth with a 7.478/206.42. But when good friend John Mulligan had his crash, Tom left to be at the hospital with him. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Miller won the inaugural NHRA Le Grandnational Molson in St. Pie, Quebec, topping Phil Castronovo's Custom Body Dodge in the final. He set Low ET and Top Speed for Funny Car at that event with a 7.01/216.86. - Chris Martin, DRO | Miller was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 15. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.99/213.27. A semifinal 7.03/215.82 beat Larry Fullerton's 7.29 and moved him into the finals against Phil Castronovo. It was a close race, and Phil had set Low ET in the semifinals with his track record 6.91. A car had blown its engine in the lane that Phil had chosen for the final. The track crew cleaned the track, but Castronovo had his car get out of shape in some leftover residue and publicly criticized NHRA for its clean-up. Nevertheless, Miller ran 7.01/216.86 for the victory while Phil recovered to 7.45 for the runner-up spot. A week later (August 22), these two was in another final round together. This time it came at the Dutch Classic held at Maple Grove. In the opening round, Sam had beat Jim Maybeck with a 6.95/200.44 and a semifinal 7.35/173.41 advanced when Lew Arrington's "Brutus" broke a rear end. Castronovo got some "revenge" for the previous week when he ran 6.94/198 for the win when Miller had a rear-end break on the line. Miller qualified #10 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.81, but he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round one. The weekend of September.19 did not go so well for Sam. He was in New England for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 6.92/200 beat Tom Sneden's 7.02/201. In round two, he faced Arrington, and Miller had his engine let go, and the explosion ripped the body off the chassis. He was OK. |

Notes: Clyde started the season at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A 7.55 qualified him fourth, and a sideways 8.05 beat Gene Conway's 8.25 in the first round. Gordon Mineo got out of shape against him in the second round, and his 7.88/178.21 advanced. In the semifinal, Don Hampton fouled, giving Morgan a free ride into the finals. Johnny Wright's 7.84/189 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang beat Clyde's close 7.92/186.72. He then went to OCIR for the first All-Pro race on Jan 4. Conway turned the tables on Morgan by beating him in the first round. He attempted to qualify for the second All-Pro race held on the 18th, but he could not better the 7.57 "bump" it took to join the eight-car field. Another first-round loss came at Irwindale on January 26 when Ken Safford's 7.58/197 in the Mr. Norm Charger beat the Javelin's 8.06/146.57. Safford had Morgan's number when he again defeated him in the first round on February 15 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. Morgan qualified fifth with a 7.85 and ran a first-round 7.86/185.18 that lost to Ken's 7.56/188. On February 22, at the third OCIR All-Pro event, Clyde singled in the first round when Mike Snively's car failed to fire. Unfortunately, Clyde fouled away a 7.56 against Jake Johnston, who set Low ET with a 7.26 in the semifinal. |

Notes: Qu Voe is a chemical company. | I think the Charger's best run in '72 was a 6.990/206.89 DNQ at Indy. The speed was a duplicate of an early '72 run at the Division 3 WCS. I think our best ET was 7.01. We lost to Big Al in Dale Creasy's car in the final. Creasy ran a 6.70 something, but Ed beat Marshall on the lights by about half an hour and almost beat him. Dale was having a fit on the starting line. Good time:-) - Paul Stenquist |

Notes: Ron started the '71 season at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car Festival. It was a sixteen-car show and he qualified #2 with a 7.06/205.94 in the "Fighting Irish." A 7.27/202.70 beat Jim Liberman's quicker 7.23/202 in the first round, but in the second round, the Camaro lost an engine in the lights and lost to Stan Shiroma. He competed at the first OCIR All-Pro event. Ron ran 7.09/205.01 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen, but an off-pace 7.66/204.08 in the semifinal lost to Gene Snow's 6.96/201. Shortly after this, Dick Rosberg replaced him behind the wheel. |
