Notes: Ken started the season with a big win on January 26 at an eight-car show at Irwindale. It was his first time out driving the "Mr. Norm" car. He started his March to victory with a first-round 7.58/197.36 (Top Speed) over Clyde Morgan's Javelin. In the semifinals, a 7.62/196.06 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.87/185. And in the final, he set Low ET with a 7.49/196.06 to beat Charlie Allen's 7.54/191. He qualified #15 at Pomona with a 7.74 for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran a best of 7.44 in round two while beating Jake Johnston's quicker 7.40. Gene Snow set Low ET in the semifinals with a 7.30 over Ken's 7.47. He was back at Irwindale on February 15 for another eight-car show. Safford qualified #1 with a 7.54/179.64. In the first round, he beat Morgan's 7.86/185 with a 7.56/188.66. A 7.45/197.80 beat the "New Breed in the semifinal." In the final, he faced Danny Ongais in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Ken won with a 7.35/197.36 over Ongais' 7.60/169. Early in March, he met Curtis Wasson's "Superstitious" Camaro for a best of three match race at St. Louis. Safford won all three races and reset the track record twice. A 4.83 on the 1/8 mile track at 163 was the first record run in the first race. He bettered that with a 4.77/161 in the second race. His third run wasn't too bad either, a 4.81. He had another match race on the 15th against Bruce Larson's new '70 Camaro at York US 30, which he won three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22. Things didn't go as well at the end of the month (March 29) at Gary, Indiana, where he lost his match race to Arnie Behling driving Mickey Thompson's new Boss 429-powered Maverick. These two would meet up again on April 12 at Alton, where Behling won their match once again. The M/T car continued to have its way over the "Mr. Norm" car at their next race in Thompson, Ohio. There Arnie reset the track record and won three straight. Revenge came at Martin, Mich., US 131 on May 16, where Safford defeated Behling two straight. Ken won the first match with a 7.44/193.13 and was awarded the match race victory when Behling had blown a rear end and could not run. Ken opened many eyes when the mostly match race terror qualified #1 at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.04/204.54. Unfortunately, he went out in the first round, with handling problems, and Ray Alley's 7.26 beat his 7.215. Late in June, he was back at US 131 for an eight-car show where he set Low ET with a 7.04/202.70 in the first round, over Allen. In the second round, he ran a 7.11/198.67 over Pat Foster, but in the third race against Tommy Grove, he lost the motor and the race. Safford set a 7.16 track record at Rockford in July. Late in July, Ken beat Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" two straight in a match race at York US 30. At the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, he ran well. He beat Sid Foster in his first race with a 7.40. He fouled away a 7.32 in his second race and lost to Don Schumacher. In his third race, he won with a 7.35 when Grove fouled against him. Eighteen FCs ran the first round at the PHR Championships, with the eight lowest ETs transferring into round two. Ken's ET failed to make the round two cut. Safford was one of four Funny Car's running at Minneapolis late in August. In his first race, he ran 7.17/207.37 to beat Bryan Teal's 7.58/181 in the "Super Chief." A 7.15/203.61 beat John Collins, who shut off in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in his next race. In the third race, he broke a rod and lost to Tom Hoover. - Ron Howard | Mr. Norm defeated USA-1 three straight with a best of 7.44/195.22 at York on 3/05/70 - James Ibusuki |

Notes: 1973 Romeo Palamides Charger (Silver with Blue Stripe down the middle). Kenny Safford drove this car exclusively in 1973. - Gary Dyer. | Kenny was at Tri-City in June for its Manufacturer's Meet. Seven cars were competing as Richard Tharp failed to show with the "Blue Max." All cars were to run three rounds of racing. In his first race, Safford's 6.74/213.27 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.63/217. A 7.04/205.94 beat Denny Savage's 7.09/185 in Kelly Chadwick's Vega in his second race. He really opened some eyes in his last race, where he set Low ET with a 6.55/220.04 while defeating Connie Kalitta's 6.79/198. Later in the month (June 22), he won the Olympics of Drag Racing event at Union Grove. His final round 6.62/214.28 beat Ron O'Donnell. Ken was at Bristol in September for the IHRA All-American race. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Raymond Beadle. But he was upset by Dale Pulde in the first round. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. Confirmed 6.57/226.70 at IHRA Bristol in June 1975. Kenny was at Byron in mid-June for the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. In his first race, he lost when he crossed the centerline against Larry Fullerton, but in his second race, he beat Shirl Greer with a 6.73/212.26. The following weekend (June 22), found the "Mr. Norm" car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Safford qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. The two had a good race, but Beadle's 6.43 got the win light over Kenny's 6.57. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1976. | I personally believe that this was still the old Palamides chassis? Tim Simplot | Ken was at Atlanta in May for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. He lasted until the second round where eventual winner Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max," ran 6.51 to beat his 6.56. | Car sold to Glen Pearmain. |

Notes: Won 1977 IHRA Pro Am Nationals. Safford won the Spring All-Pro Series race at Maple Grove in March. A final round, out of shape 9.33/91.64 won when Jake Crimmins hit the guardrail in Jim Liberman's second Monza. He won his first IHRA National event on May 1 at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships. A 6.41 qualified #6 and in the final, his 6.42 beat Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." He was still driving the Charger at these races. | Car sold to Glen Pearmain. |

Notes: World's quickest Olds, Safford-Gaide-Ratican. Set Top Speed at 1964 NHRA Winternationals at 195.22 mph. 1964 NHRA Winternationals entry list shows A/FD. Also ran 8.13/191.88 at Bakersfield 3/64. | This big, bad Oldsmobile gave the Hemis a hard time early in the year. Started the season by winning at Fontana on January 1. He ran a best of 7.99/193.96 on his way to the final where his 8.10/188.28 got the victory over Mike Snively. He was at Pomona on January 12 for an eight-car show. He reached the final by running 8.13/180.00 and 8.10/191.48. He faced Bill Alexander in the final and even though Safford had been running quicker throughout eliminations, he got anxious and fouled away a potentially winning 8.15/181.80 while Alexander ran 8.25/191 for the victory. As mentioned, he showed his Olds top end horsepower by setting Top Speed at the NHRA Winternationals. He had one of only two non-Chryslers to qualify for the race (James Warren's Chevy was the other). He was at Fremont on March 15 for the West Coast Championships, but he lost to Denny Miliani in the first round. On April 18, Safford was at Lions for an eight-car show and in round one, his 8.40/189.46 beat Chuck Griffith, but he lost in the semifinals. The Oldsmobile powered car was having a harder and harder time keeping pace with the Hemis as the year went on, but it was still competitive. Pomona held a twelve car show on April 26 and Ken's first-round 8.07/189.46 beat Goob Tuller, but an 8.25/189.06 lost to eventual winner Frank Cannon's 8.03/199. |

Notes: Ken Safford took over driving after Denny Miliani was killed at Half Moon Bay. | Ken qualified at Pomona Winters 1967 at 7.458/208.80. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.55/205.94 lost to John Edmunds' 7.42/212. The qualifying list confirms it was in this car. That was the team's last NHRA national event of 1967. Ken was at Half Moon Bay on April 16 for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Snively driving the "Hawaiian.” Mike won the first race, but in losing, Safford reset the track speed record to 214.78. He also lost the second race and the match when his quicker 7.27/212.76 lost to Snively's 7.42/193. He was at Irwindale on April 29 for an eight-car show. A first-round 7.55/208.80 beat Steve Carbone's 7.75/198 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car, and in the semifinals, Ken's 7.46/201.76 beat Dave Beebe's 7.64/206. This put him into the final against John Edmunds. The two had a good close race, with Safford winning with a 7.59/209.30 over Edmunds runner-up 7.60/219. The very next day, these two would meet again in the final at another eight-car show at Fresno with the same results. Safford reset the track record to 7.10. On May 13, he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He won his first-round match with a 7.27/205.46, but in the semifinals, his 7.34/211.26 lost to eventual winner Mike Sorokin's 7.14/205. |
