Notes: On November 1, Richard was at Amarillo to get his Funny Car license. Jake Johnston was there driving the "Blue Max" and it was in this car that Tharp made his licensing runs. At the NHRA Supernationals on November 22 at Ontario Motor Speedway, Richard was the new driver behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." He qualified #9 with a 7.19 and in the first round, was up against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Tharp was up for the task, running a 6.96 over the "Snake" who had transmission problems. In round two, he beat Rich Siroonian's 7.16 in John Mazmanian's car with a 7.12. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, a steering link broke and he had to shut off giving Larry Arnold a free ride into the final. He won the OCIR final race of '70 on December 5. It was an eight-car show and Tharp dominated. A first-round 6.94/210 beat Stan Shiroma while in the semifinals, his Low ET shot of 6.83/216.34 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." In the final, a 6.91/216.94 snagged him his first Funny Car victory. He ended his season at Irwindale on December 12 for the Toys for Tots race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.31, but he shut off in his first-round race against Dale Pulde. | Tharp's best NHRA time was 6.966. |
