Notes: Ken took over driving Ted Gotelli's car in late April, replacing Roy Thode behind the wheel. On April 30, it was Ken driving at Beeline's third annual Fuel and Gas Championships. In the first round, he ran a 7.93/186.32 that lost to Dave Beebe's 7.67/206, but he got back in on the "break rule" when John Mulligan broke after winning his first-round race. It didn't do Ken much good as he lost to Tommy Allen in his semifinal race. He ran much better on May 7 at Lions for an eight-car show. Safford qualified #1 with a 7.51/204.54, and in the first round, he laid down a 7.77/165.74 to advance when Dave Babler lost fire on the line. In the semifinals, he ran a 7.58/205.43 to beat Bob Downey's close 7.59/204. He slept on the line in the final, and his 7.63/201.78 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.70/208. Ken made up for his nap by winning the sixteen-car show at Lions on May 14. He qualified #4 with a 7.66, and in the first round, he picked up the pace to a 7.57 (Low ET) at 197.36 to beat Bob Tapia's 7.99/196. In the second round, he beat Bill Leavitt, and a semifinal 7.67/200.44 over Ron Hampshire got him in the final against John Edmunds. John failed to fire, so Ken soloed to the victory with a 7.83/193.96. He was back at Lions on May 28 for another sixteen-car show. He beat Elgin Freeman in the first round, with a 7.60/188.66, but in round two, a 7.65/210.76 lost to James Warren's 7.59/211. Safford was at Lions for an eight-car show on July 9. He qualified with a 7.76/201.78, but he burnt two pistons to do it and could not run in eliminations. |
