Notes: Wallace was at Atco in April for an NHRA Funny Car circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.82/155.44 beat Tom Sneden's sleepy 7.75/205 in the "Bob Banning" Dodge. In the semifinal, the "Alabamian" lost fire on the line against Roy Harris. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for another eight-car show. A few raindrops were falling when he ran an 8.50 to beat Pete Hill in the first round, and the race was then rained out. On April 15, he went to Cecil County for its National Open. A 6.89 qualified him #4 in the eight-car field. Pee Wee's 6.94/205.94 beat Al Hanna's 7.09 in the "Eastern Raider" in the opening round. In the semifinal, he stopped Dale Emery's off-pace 7.60/144 with a 7.06/200.00. He faced Arnie Swensen in the final, and Wallace's car broke a blower belt. Swensen got the victory with a 7.06/200. He got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 1 opener held at Englishtown on May 6. In round one, Wallace got some "revenge" on Swensen, where his 6.65/216.86 beat Arnie's 6.91/188. An even better 6.55/218.97 stopped Sam Miller's 7.18/145 in the "Bostonian" in the semifinal. He faced low qualifier Emery in the "Jegs" Camaro in the final. The hard-running Camaro dished out a 6.48/183 to beat Wallace's 6.67/218.44. Later in May, Wallace was at York US 30 for its Funny Car Nationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Emery's 6.84 in the opening round. In mid-June, Wallace was one of four cars competing in a "round-robin" race at ESTA. In Pee Wee's first race, his 6.96/196.06 lost to Hill's 6.84/181. He ran 7.12/180.72 in his second race against Harlan Thompson's 7.58/131 but fouled while doing it and lost. Wallace ran his best numbers in his last race, but his 6.84/196 lost to David Ray's 6.65/206 in Mike Burkhart's Vega. He then went to Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. He didn't stick around long, as his off-pace 8.03/131.57 in the first round lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's Vega at 6.88/208. |
