Notes: Dennis Baca debuted his new rear-engined car at Bonneville Raceway on August 22 for the NHRA Division 7 race. The car showed great promise, qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.75. He improved to a track record 6.71 in the first round to beat Tony Nancy's 7.04. Unfortunately, while getting ready to race Tom Kaiser in his semifinal race, he discovered he had hurt his motor in the first-round race. He qualified #12 at Indy with a 6.533/226.70 but could not race in eliminations and was replaced by Gary Cochran. Dennis qualified #7 at Ontario at 6.720/199.18. In round one, he beat Gaines Markley, 6.80/182.18 to 7.45/143. He lost to Jeb Allen in round two, 6.64/221 to 6.76/212.31. |
