Notes: Endres started his '74 season at Suffolk for an eight-car show in March. His 6.80 advanced when Dale Thierer shut the "Sparkling Burgundy" car off on the line in the first round. His 6.84 fell to Sarge Arciero's 6.33 in the "Jade Grenade" in the semifinal. He was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was another eight-car field, and in the opening round, Hank's 6.72/191.89 beat Sarciero who smoked the tires to a 6.82/222.77 that almost overtook the "Nirvana" car. As fate would have it, the two lined up again in the semifinal when Thierer had blown his engine in the first round, while winning and could not return. Sarge was back into the show with the "break rule" in effect. This time the "Grenade's" 6.24/226 easily beat Endres' 6.67/201.34. But things took a turn again in the other semifinal race when Chuck Turner and Tom Raley totaled both their cars in a crash. Obviously, neither was able to make the final. So for the third time, the "Jade Grenade" and the "Nirvana" lined up for another race. This one for all the marbles. There was no stopping Arciero on this day as his 6.28/218 got the victory over Endres' 6.68/206.42 runner-up effort. On April 21, he was at Cecil County for its National Open. A quick-leaving 6.86 in the semifinal beat Charlie Greer's 6.79, but Hank had blown his engine on the run and could not run Thierer in the final. After a couple of runner-up finishes, it had to feel good when he won the New England Fuel and Gas Championships in May. Hank's final round 6.50 beat Sam Miller, driving Fred Forknor's car. He didn't have to wait very long before winning again. On May 11, he won the Dutch Classic at Maple Grove. In round one, his 6.35/223.88 defeated Larry Bucher's 6.37/221. In the semifinal, he had a great race that saw his 6.36/222.77 beat Thierer's 6.39/203. He faced Miller again in the final, and once again, Hank got the win, with his 6.45/221.13 topping Sam's 6.59/210. The following week (May 19), he was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the second NHRA Division One race. Unfortunately, he broke against Tony Ceraelo in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Shortly after that, he went back to Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race. Sixteen Top Fuel cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and Hank qualified on the "bump" with a 6.61. He really showed 'em in round one, where his 6.37/217.91 startled Gary Beck's 6.35/222. But Hank slowed to 6.59/209.79 in the semifinal that fell to Miller's 6.43/217. Former Dick LaHaie car. |
