Notes: On January 12, Burgin qualified #7 at an eight-car show at OCIR with a 9.46. He lost to Skip Hess in the first round. It should b mentioned that he was still running his Willys at that race. On March 1, he was at Lions for an eight-car show, but an 8.91/157.61 in the first round, lost to a quick-leaving Ron Zeller, who won with an 8.93/154. He was back at Lions on March 15, but his 10.19 best failed to qualify. Gary qualified #1 with an 8.86/160.14 on May 24 at an eight-car show at OCIR. In the first round, he ran a best ever (to this point) 8.71/161.57 to advance over a fouling Manuel Herrera. In the semifinal, it was Burgin who fouled, wasting an 8.75/160.32 on a red light loss to Steve Korney's 8.84/156. On July 26, OCIR held another AA/GS show. Fourteen cars showed, and Gary's 8.87 qualified #3. He got past the first round, but in round two, his 9.10 lost to Herrera (now driving John Lombardo's Corvette) at 8.90. | Burgin ran Open AA/GS programs in So-Cal. Those cars frequently were not NHRA-legal. However, legal-blown street roadsters were allowed to compete against the NHRA's AA/GS class coupes starting in 1968. - RT Burgin raced the Willys early in 1969, switched to the 27-T Roadster May-1969. |
