Notes: The NHRA WWCS race at Firebird in January 1985 was pure chaos. It rained all day Thursday and Friday, leaving six inches of standing water throughout the pits. Track conditions on Saturday were unstable, and only one qualifying run was allowed that night. The surface was extremely loose due to an 80-degree dew point from the previous day’s rain. We were lucky to slip into the show on the bump, qualifying eighth with a 9.393 at 162.74 mph. | My 1984 TAFC was professionally built and brand new, debuting that same year when I earned my license in the fall. On my sixth full pass, my final licensing run, I recorded a 6.76 at 218 mph. I was certified and licensed by NHRA Division 7 Director Graham Light, with Funny Car drivers Tripp Shumake, Johnny West, and Chris Lane signing off on my credentials. | Before launching my own drag racing program, I gained valuable experience working for Jim “Superman” Nicoll from 1974 to 1976, and later part-time on Jungle Jim’s second team car—the red Monza driven by Jake Crimmins. | Drag List’s Rob McCabe wrote the following: Menoes ran the NHRA WWCS at Phoenix to start the year and qualified on the bump of the eight-car field with a 9.393/162.74. He ran #4 qualifier Bob Turner in Round 1 and won with a 9.40/162.16 to Turner’s problem-ridden 12.34/98.57. Jim drew #2 qualifier Chris Christensen next, but broke before the burnout. Eventual runner-up Christensen took the solo to the final. |
