Notes: Members of the Virginia Wheelers car club, Jamison and McVey, powered their '32 Ford coupe with a 1946 Merc flathead engine with three carbs. Due to the weight of the engine, they eliminated the radiator to reduce the frontal weight. To cool the engine, they put a barrel in the rear to hold and circulate water to the engine. They entered eleven races at Burlington, NC, in 1954, winning eight times and taking runner-up honors three times. At the race on June 6, they took a win in the competition coupe class with a speed of 95 mph. Photo: Roanoke World-News, June 14, 1954 -- MB |
