Notes: After testing their two blown Olds engines in their old Sleeprocker Special in the forepart of the 1961 racing season, they installed them in the revamped Bustle Bomb frame. It had been lengthened another 14 inches to accommodate the increase in power from the two big motors. As in the engine testing phase in the beginning of the season, all their racing was done at Deer Park. At its first outing on Sep. 10, they got top time for gas dragsters with 154.10 mph. On Sep. 24, they repeated with the top time for gas dragsters with 154.00 mph, but handling issues forced it to withdraw from competition before eliminations. Handling issues plagued them again on Oct. 8. They decided to try running on fuel. After a few runs, Scott got the handling under control and took top fuel eliminator with 157.06 mph. He was scheduled to appear at Arlington Airport on Oct. 15 against all Puget Sound dragsters. He made some excellent single runs, clocking a best time of 9.83 at 166.05 mph. However mechanical difficulties prevented him from further competition against the dragsters from Puget Sound. Disappointed, Scott and Moe promised they would return for the strip's last race on Oct. 29 to face the dragster challengers. News reports of that race made no mention of their appearance. The next reported running of the dual-engined Bustle Bomb was the next year at Deer Park on Apr. 22, 1962. It turned 155.62 mph. Photo: Everett Daily Herald, Oct. 14, 1961 -- MB |
