Notes: Nickens switched to B/SM starting at the US Nationals. He qualified #48 & Faced #16 Qualifier Willis Ragsdale in Round 1 where Nickens 9.72 lost. Then at the Keystone Nationals in Reading, Nickens qualified #5 with a 9.454 (0.546 Under). He defeated #21 qualifier Mike Sigismondo in round 1 with a 9.52/143.31 & faced #13 qualifier Ron Baker in Round 2 in an All B/SM Head up racer where Nickens's 9.54/143.22 was the losing time. At the Fallnationals in Phoenix, Nickens qualified #3 with a 9.524 (0.616 Under). He defeated #19 qualifier Harold Hoffman in round 1, #11 qualifier Wayne Laird in Round 2 & #15 qualifier Rob Smith in round 3 where the latter 2 drivers each red lighted against Nickens. He would race #1 qualifier Glen Self in the semis where Nickens would lose to the eventual Champion. Then at the NHRA WWCS in Las Vegas, Nickens set the B/SM ET National record with a 9.44. At Pomona for the Winston World Finals, Nickens qualified #5 with a 9.488 (0.512 Under). He defeated a red lighting #21 Qualifier Jayne Combs in Round 1 with a 9.58/143.54. He then defeated #13 Qualifier Ron Neff in Round 2 & #1 Qualifier Buddy Ingersoll in round 3. Then defeated #7 Qualifier Larry Kopp in a rematch of their Winternational Final in the semis & Nickens would win the race when #2 qualifier Steve Green no showed the final. |
