Notes: Dale started his NHRA national event season at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was having all kinds of problems in qualifying and, at one point, field-stripped the car down to the bare chassis in the Gainesville Hilton Hotel parking lot. Even after all that, he could only run a 7.380 best (speed unknown), far from the 6.03 "bump." He went to Baton Rouge, where he was the third alternate for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 10.98 (speed unknown) shutoff pass. He was at Columbus on June 10 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.194/207.37 (fourth alternate) failed to crack the 6.00 "bump." Shortly after that (June 24), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.12/231.95 qualified #6. He lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Grandnationals at 6.400/180.36 but lost to Frank Hawley in round one when he fell off to a 7.799/111.38. The following week (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Dale's 6.11/225 qualified #11, and in the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.02 at 236. The problem was that Don Prudhomme was running 5.82/250 in the other lane. Dale qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a new personal best, a 5.980/233.76. In the first round, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.941/243.90 to 8.315/113.92. That was Dale's last NHRA national event of the year. | Dale ran 5.98/248.61 at IHRA Cincinnati in August to set his top speed of the year. - Bret Kepner |
