Notes: Tom had an excellent year, often qualifying on the NHRA tour and going rounds. He started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.04/196.46 qualified #3. Tom was upset in the first round when Billy Glidden caught a great light and ran 7.11/194 to win over Martino's 7.09/196.20. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 7.09/195.18 qualified #15. His 7.10/195.31 beat Jerry Eckman in the opening round, and a 7.11/194.51 advanced over a fouling Mike Edwards in round two. In the semi-final, he defeated Ray Franks' 7.17/192 with a 7.14/193.75. He went up against Jim Yates in the final, and his car went into heavy tire shake, slowing to a 7.74/134.67 runner-up finish to Yates's 7.05/194. The next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Tom's 7.06/195.22 qualified #13. He got off the line first in his first-round race against Kurt Johnson, and his 7.08/195.52 held on to win over Kurt's 7.07/195. In the second round, his 7.08/195.69 fell to Steve Schmidt's 7.05/196. The NHRA Slick 50 Nationals was run at Houston, and Tom qualified #5 there with a 7.02/195.35. He slowed to 7.16/193.63 in round one, and it wasn't enough to beat Bob Glidden's 7.08/195. He then went to Rockingham, where he barely qualified for the NHRA Winston Invitational. His 7.05/195.77 sat on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier Edwards in the first round, and his 7.16/193.34 beat Mike's late7.14/194. He surprised Glidden in round two with a 7.09 and then repeated that number in the semi-final at 194.13 to defeat Rickie Smith's 7.10/194. He faced Warren Johnson in the final, and Martino got his second runner-up of the year with his 7.16/191.28, finishing second best to WJ's 7.05/195. He shot back up on the qualifying list at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 7.05/194.93 got him the #4 spot in the grid. He beat Mark Carter's 7.13/194 in the first round with a 7.10/195.22, and in round two, his 7.08/194.72 took out Bruce Allen's 7.17/193. In the semi-final, Kurt Johnson's 7.05/195 got the better of his 7.07/195.35. Rick Howard qualifying photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 4th at 7.07/195.10. Beat Billy Glidden before falling in round two to eventual winner Kurt Johnson. (Confirmed 7.005 at Maple Grove '96 and 196.80 at Pomona Finals '96. We formerly listed 6.97 at 197.84.
