Notes: Mark Thomas showed up at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.85 at 197.45 mph to qualify #2. An opening round 6.88/200.00 beat John Nobile, and in round two, his 6.93/201.65 beat Floyd Cheek's 7.00/198. In the semifinals, he faced Billy Huff, but his car went into heavy tire shake, and he shut off to 11.59 in a loss to Huff's 6.91/203. He then went to Carolina Dragway for the 1/8 mile IHRA Dixie Nitrous Nationals. A 4.51/160.11 qualified #5, but he lost to John Montecalvo in the first round. IHRA's next event was the Springnationals at Bristol, and Mark continued to qualify well. His 7.09/197.49 put him in the #12 spot for the show. But an off-pace 7.16/196.85 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Robert Patrick's 7.08/195. The IHRA Supernationals was held at Alabama International in mid-June, and Mark qualified #13 for the field with his 7.07/198.10. But he continued to have difficulties getting past the first round; this time, his 7.20/197.62 fell to Doug Kirk's 7.02/198. The IHRA tour went to New York International in July for the Empire Nationals. For the first time this season, Mark failed to qualify. His 7.20/197.41 was good for the fourth alternate. |
