Notes: Dick Harrell, known to his many fans as Mr. Chevrolet, was forced to abandon his trusty semi-hemi and adopt Chrysler elephant power for his final season. He had stayed with Chevy through 1970, knowing he would not be able to win any major meets, just because he thought his fans expected brand loyalty. In the short 1971 season that followed, that turned out not to be a problem. The fans stayed with him. Harrell was killed on September 12/1971, on a strip in Toronto, Ontario, when a lightweight front tire came apart at over 200 mph, sending him into a utility pole. Just two days earlier at US 30 Dragstrip (Gary, IN), he had participated in a benefit race to defray hospital bills for racer Larry Reyes, who was himself seriously injured in an earlier crash caused by the failure of a front tire. - RT | In July at Deer Park, Harrell set a 6.95 track record. - Ron Howard |
