Notes: Higginbotham qualified Mike Burkhart's Nova at the AHRA Winternationals, which was quite an accomplishment considering 52 cars attempted to make the sixteen-car show. But in the first round, he fouled against eventual winner Tommy Grove. Mart was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where he won his first-round race, but lost fire while making his burnout to face Don Prudhomme in round two. At the next AHRA Grand American race held at Frontier International, he beat Tom McEwen's 7.92/189 in the first round, with a 7.70/187.07. An off pace 8.12/178.21 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.49/173 in the second round. He lost in the semifinals, shutting off to a 9.40/101.23 at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit on May 26. It was getting tougher and tougher to win running a Chevy-powered car on Nitro against the Hemis, but Mart proved that it could still be done when he won over a six car field at LaPlace. A first-round 7.62/177.51 beat Don Gay's 7.73/191. In his second race, he had a really tough customer: Leonard Hughes in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Mart was up to the task, running 7.53/185.56 to beat Hughes' 7.59/193. He got a gift in his third race when Don Biggers fouled and Higginbotham won with an easy 8.09/129.49. Early in June he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. A first-round 7.87 lost to another Chevy-powered car, Curtis Wasson's Camaro at 7.81. He was runner-up to Gene Snow at the third NHRA Division 4 race. Mart's times weren't very impressive, but he made it to the final after beating Ezra Boggs with an 8.36, and a fouling David Ray with an 8.04. In the final, he broke while Snow singled to the victory. On August 2, he showed up at New England for the AHRA Grand American with a Hemi-powered Nova. mph from Frontier |
