Notes: Dan Geare, Fred Totten, and Dean LaPole ran probably the loudest funny car in the sport during the '70-'71 season. Their "rat" engine used sixteen plugs as well as their own fuel injection. Unfortunately, that got them no event victories. They had a more conventional car built for '72. The chassis was a 118" Mike Lieby that had the engine placed farther out front than most. Geare built the 497 engine by starting with a 454 and adding a quarter-inch stroker from Crankshaft Co. Howards rods and cam were used along with Arias 6.5:1 pistons. Air Research built the GMC 6/71, and it was driven 36% over. Four-port Hilborn injection sat up top. George Cerny painted the J&E Camaro body. The cost was $10,000. Early runs netted a best of 6.83/209.80. Dean was at Capitol Raceway on June 10 for the Mr. Chevrolet race. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke in the first round, against Mike Burkhart. The team also ran 6.76 at NED. They were mentioned in the movie Funny Car Summer as being the 7th qualifier at the final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.84. |
