Notes: Lee was at Blaney Drag Strip for the NHRA Division 2 race. He made it into the final against Paul Smith, but blew his engine and slowed to 7.27/167.28 in a runner-up finish to Smith's 6.80/212. Charles won the IHRA US Open at Rockingham in September. He had a bit of luck on his side. A 7.06 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field, and in the first round, he advanced with a 7.18/186.33 when Dennis Lockaby crossed the centerline. In the second round, Raymond Beadle blew an engine on the line in the "Blue Max," and Lee got to solo into the semifinals with a 7.44/173.00. Then in the semis, a 7.02/195.22 beat Shirl Greer's quicker 6.94/214. In the final, he met Dale Pulde, and although both ran 7.77, Charles got the win. Other reports are that Lee went 7.27/198 to Dale's 7.77/151 in the final. We need confirmation. The track was a "little slick," and the Hartsoe Brothers went down it four times, beating all the high-powered cars that smoked the tires or had other problems.
