Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off, as near the end of the season, he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. A hydraulic cylinder did this. This could be done right from the driver's seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on the traction at the strip on which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was in Connecticut for a best-of-three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs in his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove, when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided by the number of rounds won. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr, which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy.
